The ZX Printer is not a thermal printer, it instead uses a high voltage spark to essentially burn spots on the aluminium coated paper. Sadly the special rubber belt that carries the "printing" styli degrades over time and if yours hasn't already disintegrated into several bits it probably will the first time you try to print anything. There's a guy hoping to get new belts manufactured in China and he's already managed to get new Spectrum keyboard mats and injection moulded cases made so there's at least a non zero chance that belts might not be unobtanium forever.
@JeffDeWitt6 жыл бұрын
I had what looked like that exact same printer and mine WAS a thermal printer. Annoying thing about what was printed out is that it faded after a while.

I know i'm like.... 4 years late to commenting on this video, but the package you got from Dustin with the red trapper keeper and the ZX81USA made my ears perk up because I'm FROM Nashua NH - and good on you for saying that right the first try! I don't remember there being a Sinclair being in Nashua, but given it looks like that original purchase order was printed on a dot matrix printer (and it's from the 80s) that doens't surprise me. Alas I wasn't even born when the RAM adapter was purchased in 1983! XD However my mom worked at DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) in Nashua for over a decade - I have fond memories of that place! The server room in her building was an entire FLOOR - very cool to see as a kid.

One thing though, trying to move a Sony FW900 24" SuperWide (fantastic monitor, used with the SGI Onyx2 I was in charge of) up two flights of stairs on my own was a really stupid idea. :D Put my back out, off work for a week and had to take slightly hallucinatory pain killers for a month... :} Here's an amusing reference: imgur.com/a/UDZFL#0 and specs (note the weight; what was I thinking??): www.cnet.com/products/sony-gdm-fw900/specs/

I had to stop at 1:49 and type this b4 I spaced it out bc of all the other goodness you get on “opening day”. That Yamaha daughter board was the brains of early mainstream *STUDIO* music using PC’s. After they got everything on reel to reel, then did the initial tuning, HUGE studios like Normandy just outside Boston where bands like Aerosmith, New Kids on the Block, along with a plethora of others would slap the music onto a .dat disk, and do the final cuts with what is an incredibly basic mixer by today’s standard, but back then, that daughter board was king, and had an outrageous price to match. I didn’t look up the model yet, but I’m guessing it’s from the early 90’s-late 90’s, and though the model number changed, nothing on the board did, just software improvements. In 1991 I was at a studio named “Danger Studios” to record vocals for a friend, and they were just installing one that arrived earlier in the day, with a whopping price tag of $1599.99. Heh, that board is a legend.

I've just recently come across your channel and I love it. I was curious though, there's an old game I used to have for my Tandy 1000 back in the day, Crayola Creation Studio, and it had this "screen saver" built in where this alligator character would walk across the screen and do stuff. If you left it long enough, one of the things he did was thrust his pelvis saying "yes" repeatedly from one side of the screen to the other. It's something I remember vividly from my childhood, and I can't find the game or any reference to this anywhere, and I was curious if you have the game, and if you could test it and see if I'm remembering it right. I know this is a strange request. :)

I've posted CRTs worldwide, the key to safe posting is, a) use a *huge* box, b) pack the monitor upside down. This avoids pressure being placed on the fragile base. I include foam pieces between the base and the case so it can't move around. Time consuming to do though, and posting a big box is expensive (because of the volumetric weight). Clint, how are you going to handle all this when your sub count is 10x what it is now? :D (an inevitable destinty IMO!)
@CidHighwindFF77 жыл бұрын
Lazy Game Reviews Aw man. I wish I still had the FW900 24" trinitron I used up to 2012. Couldn't beat that thing for picture quality, but it was just too big to keep around. Went to another local collector.
@mapesdhs5977 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was enormous, though not the largest CRT I heard about. SGI told me one of their industrial customers damaged an Indigo2 chassis by putting a 32" CRT on top of it. Dread to think what a 32" CRT woud weigh, the FW900 was crazy enough. The Indigo2 is pretty strong, but yikes. :D I had a 2nd FW900 for a while, but no real use for it (just too big) and the guns needed redoing. Gave it away eventually.

That is some interesting film you got sent there for the Impulse. Three are limited editions, two of which are no longer produced by the company, and one of which is really hard to come by online. The duochromes do what they sound like and only use two colors like black and red only. The interesting pack there with the Chinese on the front is the rare "Lucky 8" pack that was a limited release for Chinese New Year. Seven red metallic border pics with one lucky gold bordered one placed randomly in the stack. I'd advise using these wisely, and of course keeping them in your fridge till then.

That Yamaha DB50XG is awesome! I have the "stand-alone" version of that card called the SW60XG. Hardware-wise they are pretty similar and the sound is identical. XG MIDI adds so many sounds to the General MIDI set and Yamaha's samples are musically wonderful. As a daughter board, the DB50XG will be easier to integrate into games as it won't require the "Line out / Line in passthru" that the stand-alone card requires. Final Fantasy VII has a wonderful "XG MIDI" soundtrack and there are a few other games as well. All in all, enjoy that card. Delightfully retro, works well in DOS/Windows 3.1/Windows 95 and has drivers all the way up through Windows XP.

My Step-father had a TS34X given to him when he worked at Diebold. I used to play Chip's Challenge on it! Never thought i would see another one of those again.

Oh man, I love that old Trinitron. I had the 17", then the 19" versions. Then I got a Dell 21" with the newer circular Dell logo jewel and clicky power button (however I missed that big CHUNKy front power button so much - so satisfying!) I actually still have the last one, though... well, it's in my parents' basement and when I stopped by for dinner the other day I noticed it was sitting on a dolly, ready to get moved (probably to the trash). I'd have them hold onto it so that I can use it for my retro machines once I have more space but I can't blame them for wanting to toss it after sitting derelict for so many years. There's a big Boeing (now Spirit Aerosystems) factory here in Wichita and they used to have a surplus "store" that was open every Saturday. They sold old monitors for 10-20 bucks each depending on age and size. That's how I ended up easily and affordably acquiring these (and justifying the next size upgrade) even with my teenage lack of income. Thanks for the blast in the past!

The look of anything on those Trinitron Dell monitors is gorgeous. I have the 15" version, which I used for PC gaming as a little kid in the early 2000s. Recently I've been using it on my current PC for playing any games that are originally in 4:3 aspect. The picture is a bit bit dark though, and turning up the brightness beyond 50% just makes everything look white and washed out, which sucks because the colors are so darn vibrant on 50% contrast 50% brightness! Also, even though Windows and Nvidia keep saying no, it can go below its lowest res of 800x600, down to 640x480 with some nice scan-lines! a 2x scale in DosBox at that res looks freaking amazing.

Holy shit, music Ace 2... I recognize that!! In 1st grade, I went to a private Christian School. One of the classes was essentially a music class, and we used that!

The Ultra ts34x is made by Compal; generic manufacturer that sold to OEMs. Cool find!
