I remember back around 1975 I saw the real thing pass by our school playing fields as we were only a mile from Wigston South junction on the mainline from St Pancras to Leicester. I think the unit also ventured to the Old Dalby Test Track quite often during its development. It was what got me into railways as a kid, and a few friends and I would spend many lunchtimes catching the Class 45's on the main Leicester to London passenger runs, Class 25's on the London brick trains, class 31's on parcels etc. Compared to the BR Blue stuff of the time this was a taste of the future and looked impressive when we managed to see it fly by at speed from time to time.

I have one of these ordered from NRM + one extra carriage non DCC model, found the best way to connect the coaches was to lay it on it's side on a sponge strip and pre-apply a little clock oil to the yolk connector and had no difficulty in "clicking" it all together. Then simply tip it up onto the track. Wish I had ordered two of them like I did with the Underground "S" stock and the Bachmann Blue Pullman, the price of the APT-E was a steal.

+Ever Free Gaming Unfortunately Rapido trains aren't cheap, well not in the US. Even starter sets are getting expensive, much less the first class overly expensive collectors stuff. I am not going to pay US $800 for any locomotive, not even a UP Big Boy.... US $80 to $160 is spending too much.... I wanted a new Hornby King class, but it isn't worth over US $200... Well, not in my book....

You are after protection for this unit, in HO/00 the type, is made in Germany by Train-Safe and is type HO2L. They use to have a UK importer, but alas no longer, so it is now direct from Germany. These display rectangular tubes, have inlaid track, so the train drives directly into the tube, untouched by human hands. End caps hold the train in tube

The Hornby Select has had a firmware update so you can get all the sound. Just send it to Hornby and they will do the rest.
@SeaToby118 жыл бұрын
+Ankdoeslego Why bother to do that when all you have to do is buy either the Hornby Elite controller or Elink controller. Yes, both are more expensive, but there will be future Select firmware updates, which isn't at all upgraded at home for firmware updates as both the Elite and Elink controllers. A Hornby design mistake, but the Select was never considered a professional controller, the Select was designed to be a entry level DCC controller, and therefore did not get a USB port interface for computer linkage for future firmware updates/upgrades. We are living in a digital world today, and in our digital world there will be software and firmware updates/upgrades. Even worst for Hornby presently, Hornby is no longer shipping Hornby North American transformers, not even as a separate additional order. My Canadian supplier has had to resort to a different supplier for both 1 amp and 4 amp transformers useable for the North American 110-120 volt electricity. It is as if Hornby doesn't want to sell in the US and Canada anymore...

Way too much money! Nearly for £400.00? You must be joking and jest! Are they hand-built or something, for that sort of money?
@EE12CSVT8 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Wilson Incorrect. It's worth every single penny. We costed that it should cost nearer £500 for what you get in the box, so as it happens, they've performed a miracle to make it for £350 and make profits for the manufacturer, Rapido, and Locomotion.
@jacobwilson54688 жыл бұрын
I agree that it is worth the money, just a lot to spend in one go on a model railway locomotive.
@EE12CSVT8 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Wilson Well, it's not just "one locomotive". It's two highly detailed and lit DCC sound-equipped powered locos and two highly detailed and lit trailer cars.

@ankdoeslego97318 жыл бұрын
It's £175 for the DCC Ready model and 275 for the Sound fitted model
@SeaToby118 жыл бұрын
+Terry Long Not really. Some of us believe the model train hobby is more for collectors now than hobbyists who desire nice looking trains running on their layout... Oh, a Hornby Railroad model accomplishes this. What good is a model if it can't be picked up from the layout easily and exchanged for another train? A manufacturer which suggests keeping the train on the layout? Are you a collector storing trains behind glass, or are you a hobbyist running trains on your layout?
@terrylong88948 жыл бұрын
SeaToby11 To be perfectly fair, a Rapido model isn't something I would get for a 12 year old just getting into the hobby, as Rapido is well known for its attention to detail, which is impressive. Rapido also skews more to higher end of the price range as a result. Having said that, however, I have several Rapido cars on my lay out, including three stainless steel Budd cars, which look absolutely stunning together when lit and are the pride of my fleet, so I repeat what I said earlier, if you have the opportunity to purchase a Rapido model, do it. Rapido is worth every single penny.
@SeaToby118 жыл бұрын
Terry Long Walters Proto Superliner II cars are very nice too as well as the Kato Genesis locomotive. My brother bought 2 different 4 car sets for way too much in my opinion, US $260 x 2, plus another US $220 for the Kato loco... Total US $740, just for a 8 car train with 1 loco with no tracks and controller.... I am sorry, but a Amtrak Superliner train should NOT cost so much. No wonder the kids are not getting train sets anymore for Christmas gifts. One can buy a new notebook or a lap top computer for less...
@jasonhowe16977 жыл бұрын
my question would be did they get the train to a passenger stage or was it just a red test vehicle that really never saw the light of day.. as a passenger service I would of thought it would come in a 9 car variant 2 loco, 2 sleeper, 3 passenger and 2 diner..
@RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS7 жыл бұрын
The 'E-train' (APT-E) never carried passengers, it only conducted tests for tilt and such, which assisted development of the APT-P (P meaning Prototype) which was electric. Unfortunately, the press around the latter was very poor due to delays and teething troubles.

It just boggles my mind that the manufacturers don't paint models like this in a high-gloss finish. They want such detail, but the dull finish is all wrong! Manufacturers don't get it... For £350 it's actually excellent value for money. For that you get two DCC sound-equipped tilting locos, two exquisite lit trailer cars with full interior, excellent packaging, a useful manual and a lavish book. A few of us modellers costed that it should really be nearer £500, so it's remarkable how they managed to do it for £350 and make a profit.
@SuperWHIZZO8 жыл бұрын
+Richard Jones So a "few of us modellers " have costed a model made by the inscrutable Chinese have you . Rapido despite their jokey style are hard headed business men and they know they are being used as another conduit for Chinese product in the West . Bet when they explained to the Chinese that they were using this model as a "breaker flag-ship" into the new British market for Rapido products they got a deal that would surprise us all.
@EE12CSVT8 жыл бұрын
+SuperWHIZZO As a matter of fact, the other modellers have a substantial collection of OO DCC sound diesel locos (like Phil Sutton’s Class 24) and other rolling stock, so yes, they do know the market value. I challenge you to find two high-specification DCC sound diesel locos plus two lit high-specification coaches for £350 or less. In the instruction manual for this model, Rapido make it clear they intend to make a profit from this project. It could well be that it's the factory that's doing the loss-leader.
