Cylinder Cocks are "taps" that are found on the bottom of the cylinders. Essentially, when a locomotive stops, steam in the pipe feeding the cylinders will condense into water. Cylinder cocks allow this water to drain out. If water was allowed to stay in the cylinder, when the piston travels to the end, the water would be "compressed" (which is nowhere nears as ""compressible" as steam) and create v. high pressure that can blown the ends of the cylinders. The cylinder cocks is what creates the characteristic cloud of steam from the front of the loco when starting off. You will notice this more in early morning, as once the cylinders have warmed up through use, the water is far less likely to condense. If a loco has been standing for more than a few minutes, you will normally open the cylinder cocks for a couple of wheel rotations to make sure the cylinders are water free.

the blow down is the condensed water that buildssup in the cylinder and a valve under the cylinder is opened and the water is cleared to prevent piston damage
@GrahamWalters9 жыл бұрын
+Jleone leone Wrong ! A blown down is done to help clear the boiler pipes of any scale that has formed on them, as the blow down cock is opened, cold water is injected into the boiler, causing the pipes to shrink quickly, this cracks off any scale and cinders that has formed in or on them. Piston damage is avoided by opening the drain cocks, and passing steam through them to warm through, this is done as part of the warm up process.
@jleoneleone87609 жыл бұрын
+Graham Walters thanks
@danieljarvis56509 жыл бұрын
+Graham Walters water is not injected while the loco is blowing down. The blowdown stirs up rubbish and impurities in the boiler so the boiler doesn't corrode. Usually the boiler goes from a 3/4 or more on the glass to 1/2 full when the man on the footplate will blow the whistle to signal the glass is halfway

Is ELink essential for TTS sound, or is TTS backwards compatible with the Select? And also, are regular digital locos forward-compatible with ELink?
@stirlingsheep8 жыл бұрын
TTS is compatible with Select, though I think you only get 10 sounds due to the limitations (apparently you can send the select to Hornby and they'll update it so all are available though don't quote me). All digital locomotives that have a DCC chip should be compatible with the eLink - the eLink is just another DCC controller like a Hornby Elite, but you control through a computer/laptop etc. Personally I think it'd be better value buying a separate eLink, proper TTS sound loco like the Duke of Gloucester and 3 full price Pullman coaches than buying this set for £250+

Unfortunately, the Windows software required to run Hornby's software is getting a bit old and tired. Especially when Microsoft is pushing very hard their latest system software, Windows 10... Hornby needs to get on top of this, ASAP... It is getting harder and harder to find Windows 7 system software, well, computers that run it... Everyone has updated by now to Windows 10...

Welcome back, Will. Missed your regular video updates. I can understand why you are so enthusiastic about this train set. It looks, sounds and appears to run well. Another amazing review, I believe cylinder cocks are valves that use high pressure steam to discharge condensed water from the cylinders as that can be quite dangerous if the water pools up when the engine is under way as the pressure buildup is akin to that of a miniature boiler explosion.

Why is it that hornby and bachmann are behind in their sound systems and details? I know that here in America, Lionel and MTH trains are all very highly detailed and have fantastic sound systems. Why are British/European model train manufacturers so far behind?
@bahnspotterEU9 жыл бұрын
The sound chip manufacturer ESU is from Germany. You might only know them from their impressive sound systems, but they also make locomotives too. Most of them are H0 scale. They have a Class 66 with working break sparks which are LEDs that light up when you slow the loco down quickly. Other than them, there are more companies doing many sound equipped locos. Most of them are from the continent though, not from Britain.
@Battleb0rn9 жыл бұрын
My apologies, friend. I am from America, so i'm more used to our manufacturers here. lionel and MTH on some of their larger scale locomotives as well as their smaller scale have some seriously impressive effects like smoke sounds that are synchronized with the turning of the wheels and automatic brake sounds when you slow the train, as well as lights and incredible detail.
