+dcg12b I was at Barrow Hill Roundhouse awhile back attending an LMS Steam Gala and No' 1000 was in the middle of two engines that were steamed up in the roundhouse and at one point, a bit of steam went over No' 1000 and for a brief moment. It looked like No' 1000 was in steam herself. :)

I actually bought an old Hornby Midland Compound model ages ago off Ebay. Never had a chance to run her as my layout was on the way out at the time, but she's still the pride & joy of my collection. That's why I am currently cursing your name, sir, for showing off such an infinitely better version of my baby. I am absolutely green with envy. The Bachmann models are all lovely, but this is in a league of its own. Now, why can't Bachmann America start making models on this level?

Hey Will. I'm Will, too! I started collecting trains thanks to your videos which I stumbled across one day when they were featured on the youtube homepage. I have since bought 3 trains, and when I get my next paycheck this will be my next one. My brother likes to make fun of me, asking me if I'm going to be going trainspotting in the snow! But I really find this quite an enjoyable hobby, the detail really is excellent on these tiny little things. So intricate and beautiful. Great start so far!

A few things to say: 1.) Edward is not a compound, which I can tell because he has inside cylinders only. 2.) Lionel model trains are making Big Boy 4-8-8-4s as their newest addition to the "VisionLine" fleet, and it, not only had the depleting coal feature, it's coal load actually goes down in the tender! It's amazing what can be achieved with O gauge...

She looks amazing. Edward wasn't a Midland Compound, he was a Furness Railway K2 "Larger Seagull", but the Reverend W. Awdry made his model of Edward out of an LMS 2P. :) Now thanks to this review, I'm going to get one of these instead of a City class. It's a lot more but it has a lot more appeal! :)

I always take a dremel tool and cut the fake coal loads out so I can put real coal in. It takes a steady yet strong hand due to the nature of the dremel tool always wanting to pull in one direction due to the fact of the sheer speed of the cutting wheel constantly spinning at warp ten in order not to nick or cut the tender body.

It does indeed look a little bit like Edward, but Edward has been shown to be based off the Furness Railway K2 "Larger Seagull" 4-4-0s built in 1896. Very nice review overall. I'm hoping to visit the UK in 2014 and, once I visit the NRM, this will definitely be a pickup to bring home!

DC is simple direct current. The speed is controlled by the voltage and the direction by the polarity. No current = No movement. DCC is a more or less constant voltage and everything is controlled through commands. In Short: DC: You control the track/ circuit. DCC: You control the locomotive, points, etc via a common feed with individual signals, which are decoded into DC again to operate motors etc.

Will, The Midland compounds made use of both high pressure steam and low pressure steam when it was discovered that there was a flat spot on starting with high and low pressure steam acting in concert. A correction was made, in the form of manual adjustment, to allow high pressure steam into the outside cylinders, thus overcoming the flat spot caused by insufficient steam pressure to overcome the flat spot. This was subsequently resolved by Deeley who introduced automatic 'switching' between the high and low cylinders by way of regulator adjustment. This is why these locos are most commonly referred to as Deeley Compounds. It became standard practice at the time, I am not clear if BR adopted the practice. I apologise for the rather long winded explanation, but there is no economical way to explain the genious of the solution. Also note the beautiful Ramsbottom Safety Valves modelled on the boilers top - you forgot to mention them. Regards, P.

If you did go with broad gauge, some of the beautiful British steam locos would be alot different. But, having one standard gauge is better, you can essentially go anywhere. Where as down here, we have Narrow, Broad and Standard gauge. So, if you get a chance to come down here, go to Victoria and you can occasionally see some broad gauge steam in action.

That is a beautiful loco. Great review, really informative. 3 cylinder locos weren't common around the world, it was more of a British Practice. You can tell that Edward is not a Midland Compound because he has internal cylinders, not external.
