I have one of these too. One mod I have done to improve the sound quality is to relocate the speaker face down into the fuel tanks with holes drilled to let the sound out and then sealed it in. The difference is very noticeable and is a quick, easy & worthwhile mod to do. I also added lights as you mentioned in the video.

A spirax valve releases air and moisture from the locomotives air system, sometimes used when the engine is running however, it is used when the engine has shutdown primarily.

Spiral valve is an automatic moisture drain valve designed to allow water to be released from the air system at the lowest possible point (normally mounted on the air reservoirs), and are notorious for their clicking even when the engine is not running as long as there is air still in the reservoirs.

I don't know what a 'Spyrax valve' is but I have frequently heard diesels making that ticking noise when having recently been shut down, both from my early adulthood when diesels ruled the roost and at various diesel galas when they've gone into preservation. I always presumed it was the engine block and other metal parts contracting as they cooled.
@InterCity828 жыл бұрын
A couple of people have so far explained what it is - something to do with water being drained from the system. It's a very distinctive sound! haha
@MisterHampshire8 жыл бұрын
It is indeed a distinctive sound and one I remember so well from my 'train spotting' days on a summer Sunday when diesels in the bay or wherever would be shut down waiting for their next turn. Loved the sound of the engine(s) long shut down process, then to erupt into life again. Unfortunately I was unable to do SVR diesel gala this year but certainly next.

Hornby only make a Railroad model - currently. But at least the sound is defo worth it!
@GregPalmer10008 жыл бұрын
Good review, not to bad sound system, as far as the model goes, Hornby(Triang) introduced their class 37 or EE type 3 at the time in 1965/66 I ordered 2 in BR green, they had x04 type motors similiar to the class 31 or Brush type 2 plastic wheels on the non driving bogie, no seperate details, but at the time they were ok. since then Hornby has upgraded the chassis for different motors not much re tooling on the bodies over time. Hornby missed out to re tool the 37 completely when they introduced the class 50 as the bogies are the same and therefore could have also used the same motor etc.
@InterCity828 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh - thanks for the info! Sounds like you know more than Hornby themselves! haha

The Railroad 37 these days are based on the old Lima 37 tooling.
@GregPalmer10008 жыл бұрын
+zoomer1979 Are you sure as I recall the Lima 37 was not a bad model except fir the motor it was a much finer model than the hornby one I thought vitrains ess using lima molds
@zoomer19798 жыл бұрын
Nope, ViTrains is a completely different model, as different as the Bachmann is from a Hornby. When Lima went bust, Hornby bought a lot of tooling moulds to replace their inferior stuff like the 37, 47, HST and made additions such as 73 and 40. The only changes made were to the motors, replacing the Lima pancake with a Hornby mechanism.
