Cutting the clay in half and allowing us to see the inside was exactly what I needed to understand how to open! Thank you! Great teaching!

My husband stayed so annoyed by me for doing that to the pots he made for weeks. He cringed every time I cut my pots in half too. He’d say, why did you do that? It looked good! I replied that the next one might be even better since I knew where I was having issues or could do better now that I saw areas to improve. I’ve learned a lot from these & other videos by Earth Nation.

BY FAR, THIS IS THE BEST EVER EXPLANATION OF HOW TO BEGIN WHEEL-THROWING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!! I HAVE WATCHED A LOT OVER THE YEARS TO SHARE WITH MY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AS I POST HELPFUL VIDEOS LIKE THIS ON OUR PLATFORM SO THAT IF THEY MISS ANY OF MY DEMOS, THEY HAVE SOMEONE WHO ECHOES WHAT I HAVE TOLD THEM. YOU, SIR, ARE THE REAL EXPERT... THANKS!

This was great. I don't think I've ever done it like this. I started pottery abt 10-12 yrs ago, did it for about 2 yrs, stopped, and just started up again after New Year's. The majority of my pieces end up with thick, heavy bottoms, with tons of trimming to fix. I'll call it Donte's Donut method. From now on, the only big bottom will be my own. 😉

@Dante, thanks for these videos. I think this is the third time to watch them. I just wanted a quick refresher before I want out to the garage to throw. Potter Tip: I accidentally found that if you cover the tip of your pin tool with slip you can tell the depth easily without using your finger since when you pull the pin tool out, the tip will be clean for the thickness of the bottom.

I want to adopt you! You are terrific. I first got into clay when I was in high school. I ignored my teacher and just charged into every technique, including making a big mess on the wheel and not nice pieces--but I LOVED it! Because, clay. I'm scheduled to take a course this summer. After decades away from the work, I went looking for a refresher. This is what I needed. I think I will write to my high school teacher to apologize and thank her for all the indulgence she showed me as I did my own thing. And I'm going to watch all your videos!

Also, that business of mushing away the little hill in the middle? I did that all the time, furtively, because I thought it was a hack for bad work. I didn't want the teacher to see the hill and tell me to start over again. So, sometimes, DIY/stubborn pays off.

Week four and I'm still struggling with my clay being uneven when I pull and eventually ripping off. Today, I realized it's because I'm pulling too far and not evenly. Rewatching this for the tenth-ish time, I now see you aren't opening it very far - just an inch or so. I've been making bowls for big dogs. Try, try again!

For me as has been previously stated I open for smaller vessels with my right thumb, leading into a pull of the walls with the clay between my thumb (still on the inside/cetner of opened clay) and the blade of the palm of my right hand. Be sure to keep your left hand braced on the outside of the clay body as well as Jhasael said to keep the clay centered.

When cutting the clay in half to examine how my technique is. Is the clay too moist to try and use again after? Do I have to “recycle” that and start with a new clay afterwards?

I had my first class last night and can honestly say, I was disappointed not to go through cutting the project in half to get a feel for the thickness of the sides. That being said, I went way too thin on the first one and it collapsed, thereby turning it into a ball for next week. LOL. I remembered your tip on the big hill, and many others, and it allowed me to compress the bottom well (I think).

Very frustrating watching you screw around with the clay like that. You NEVER PUT A FLAT PIECE OF CLAY ON THE WHEELHEAD PERIOD. CLAY IS WEDGED. BOTTOM IS ROUNDED GET IT. THEN PRESSED ONTO THE WHEELHEAD. THIS WAY NO AIR TRAPPED IN BOTTOM.
