Thank you soooooo much!!! That Shared Folders page, above the big yellow buttons, has that permissions thing that you would think would go: Users: Read / Write / Execute Others: Read Only But the complete opposite is true! OMV really is buggy compared to Synology! Thanks though, this has been putting the brakes on me for months!

It does have its idiosyncrasies, but I have 4TB of data on a Raspberry Pi 4 and two 8TB USB drives running for years now. All of my channel content is stored there, plus photos, videos, MP3's, etc. Best wishes.

This may be a necromancy of an old topic but I wonder: I have a shared folder, and I want to setup inside that folder (folder a) another new folder (folder b) with different user and password. Would user be shown another user/password prompt when trying to access folder b? or should I setup another different folder share? (new folder b share)

I would keep it simple. Different permissions, different share.

@ShotokuTech

There may not be enough granularity in the permissions. If you can grant Read/Write to a group the user belongs to, but add explicit deny on deleting folders on the user, that could work. But I don't see a way to do that with the granularity of permissions in the console.

Mine is in the closet in one of the rooms. It stores all our photos, music and video collection and backups of our PCs. So it is like private cloud storage. I need a couple bigger USB drives. The 4TB ones are getting full. Next it will be a couple of 8TB drives. I need to start selling off some of this tech!

I have an issue with this configuration, whenever a new folder is created on the share, the user I'm logged in has no execute privileges on that folder so I have to reapply the Recursive check every time. Is there a workaround for this?

That is interesting because I am using this as the underlying data storage for the video content on this channel. To be honest I have not updated this system in some time. Maybe I need to revisit. But I can't promise. Thanks for your comment.

My Problem is, that I dont want to forward the whole FTP thingy because my cascaded Routers dont like that at all. The alternative is SSH, but in SSH for some reason, the read, write and visit settings dont mean a thing. That means that every user with ssh, which is needed to connect to the server will have all rights and can basically delete my whole OS. Any Idea on how to fix this? Im searching for Weeks now and even reddit couldnt help me.

In windows 10 at least, you can right-click on the start button itself and choose 'sign out'. I was kinda struggling here to illustrate the point of your question. If you are in a fresh session, a restart or sign out/sign in, when you attempt to access a share by using the run dialogue or Windows Explorer address bar, \\ServernameOrIPAddress\ShareName, your current credentials are passed on. If these credentials aren't valid for that share, you get prompted for a user name and password. You can save or store that credential for use again and again. You can also use the 'Map network drive' dialogue in Windows Explorer, right-click on 'This PC'. Pointed it at \\ServernameOrIPAddress\ShareName and click Connect using different credentials. If you already have a session on that share, you may run into issues trying a different connection to the same share. So log out/log in can clear some of that out. Worst case is command prompt NET USE command to see current sessions: C:\Users\jeff_>net use New connections will be remembered. Status Local Remote Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK Z: \\RASPBERRYPI\ShotokuTech Microsoft Windows Network The command completed successfully. Then: C:\Users\jeff_>net use z: /delete There are open files and/or incomplete directory searches pending on the connection to z:. Is it OK to continue disconnecting and force them closed? (Y/N) [N]: y z: was deleted successfully. Now there are no connections: C:\Users\jeff_>net use New connections will be remembered. There are no entries in the list. Log out/log in again and reconnect. This is a lot to put in a comment. Play around. You can't break it. It will work for you, then you will have more understanding. LOL I just broke mine doing the above. Now I have to fix it. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year.

You could try setting the user as 'read only' in the Shared Folders/ACL and in SMB/Share Folders permission set to 'read only'. Without 'read and execute' users would not be able to open the files at all.

@@anthonycoppet8788 What is impossible? To install Plex you have to download and install a 3rd party addon "OMV Extras". I am just saying that if folders suddenly appear perhaps it is part of this third party addon "OMV Extras". Hello Sir, thanks for the explanation on the video, i wanna ask as i explain : I have to make one main shared folder (MAIN) with three subfolders inside (SUB1, SUB2, SUB3) where all users must have read only permission. Inside the subfolder (Ex: SUB1), there are three sub-subfolders and i have to choose three users also of each sub-subfolder that must be able to have read, write and execute permissions. Can we do this on OMV??
@ShotokuTech
@ShotokuTech 2 жыл бұрын
For the three read, right, execute users on the three sub folders, you might have to create shares on those folders with these permissions. If you have read only on the main share, that might overrule any file permissions set on sub folders. So RW users need a share and file permissions that are both RW.

I have an issue that's super basic and can't figure out. I'm creating a public share..and in the drop down for permissions I set to everyone read/write. I hit save. Then save changes to config. I go edit share and its not set to everyone. It reverts back to default which is administrator and other etc. What am I missing?

Heck I even had to rewatch my own videos. LOL. Start with this: OpenMediaVault: Configure Disks, Shares, SMB and Users kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqCudo1_itFlmqc I just created a share named test under shared folders with 'everyone RW' and when I go back and look at ACLs it has 'users RW'. When you click around in here, there is no entity named 'everyone' that I can find anywhere. So I am thinking you need guest access in the SMB Service by adding the share here and setting 'Public' to 'Only Guests' meaning no credentials are required to access. Also in SMB Service, when adding a share there is a switch for 'Honor existing ACLs' that might block access if this folder has a parent folder with different setings. You may need to switch this off. Hope this helps

4:56 I found a quick and easy way to logout of the network share with just one click. Just paste this into a notepad and change it to be a bat file: @ECHO OFF net use * /delete /y PAUSE Every time you click the bat file it should open up a cmd window and delete all Windows credentials saved in the credential manager (Control Panel \ User Accounts \ Credential Manager). You can do this manually opening up a Command Prompt, just don't run it as Administrator, and type: net use * /delete /y /y is used to skip the confirmation that you wanna delete all the credentials. I found that this works most of the time, but when you login and logout frequently it may not log you out even tho there are no saved credentials. If this is the case you just need to wait or relog into your windows profile. Source: superuser.com/questions/352270/how-to-make-windows-7-log-off-from-samba-shared-drive-manually-or-automatically

Thanks for the suggestion, but I didn't find it to be a sure fire thing. I actually did try the 'net use delete' commands as I wanted to demonstrate different access between one user and another and this did not work until I logged out of the Windows session and logged back in. There were no net connections listed and I either wound up accessing as the previous user or got error saying there is already a session with a different credential, though I could not delete one. I want to stay on topic to keep the video concise as possible, so I did not show NET USE commands in the video. My line of thinking is if people are using shared machines with different levels of access, probably best to get them accustomed to logging out. Thanks for the detailed comment.
