Pat Conroy, The Water is Wide

"I want you to live good, contributing lives," Pat Conroy told his students.
Long before he became a famous author, Pat Conroy taught elementary school in an impoverished community on Daufuskie Island off the coast of South Carolina. His book The Water Is Wide (1972), which was honored by the National Education Association, was largely based on his experiences.

one of the south's best acclaimed writers-a legend in his own time.his writings did not always show the best of the south but reviled the complexity in all of us.i cant think of anything greater that a teacher can do than to inspire students to reach for their best potential no matter what social economic status they find themselves in.RIP Pat Conroy!!!!!

How far have we really come since the release of The Water is Wide. Unfortunately not very far. I suppose however it depends on what lens one is looking through. I remember when the textile magnets had individuals under their thumbs enslaving them in the beliefs that higher education was not attainable nor affordable. That the “mills” was the key to happiness and success. Who was it that said, “ I like uneducated people”. He certainly did. God help us and the future of our children.
