This business of dividing the metronome beat in half, quarters, and eighths (i.e., twice a measure, once, once every two measures, once every four) is one of the most helpful practice tricks I’ve picked up from these sessions, Bob. Thanks!

very cool to hear! for me too, and I'm out here trying to show the new bassists (and rhythm sections) that 'this is the way!'

Very nice lesson in syncopation (Ted Reed) and how to learn songs. Great example of how to use metronome. More of this is welcome. I am drummer.

One interesting exercise based upon this kind of stuff which i came up with is playing the fundamental note of every chord using the rhythm of the melodies. It is really helpful to understand and internalize the relationship between melodies and harmony.

Thanks Bob great lesson as always. I know this tune, so I was hanging around partly to see your fingerings! (Same as mine). But I’m gonna use this for other be-bop heads for sure!! OH. And the metronome work. Pure gold. Thank you!!

Sax player here. “ of course.”.drummers are the reason metronomes were invented. That’s why they can’t knock on your door in time when they’re dropping off your pizza. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Seriously, your your humility is illustrative. The pocket is strong in you. Although you didn’t get into it, as a bassoon student in college, I was taught that within a beat there are flexibilities within the groove. I think Bird took advantage as well as Trane. Brecker for sure. Getz? Fugget about it. However, the pocket is the reason! You’re an excellent teacher. Thx for all the lessons. I’ll be putting them to use as soon as the wife allows. Haha.

Thanks Charles! There are a few other places as well that I think are up for debate regarding now choices (not to mention ornamentation)- particularly in the 1st ending. Can't say I've noticed anybody playing an 'A' where you mentioned, but I don't doubt it. Help me out with a link... I'm always trying to learn. ✌

@@bobdeboo8549 I hear the A in both the Bags Groove album and in Relaxin. other fun fact: the alternative name for Oleo is Newk's Number One. you can hear them saying it in the beginning of the Relaxin track

@@bobdeboo8549 it's a real tricky one! the other one that's tricky is the repeated figure in the A section is Bb F C (instead of Bb G C). you can hear this more clearly in Everybody Digs Bill Evans and in Bag's Groove and also in Relaxin but only when Coltrane comes in because Miles is ghosting the note too hard
