Happy to see you revisiting it!! The fangame Undertale Yellow has gotten me back into Undertale lately, it's SO good a full length game that took 7 years for the devs to complete, and the OST is incredible! Thanks for reviewing Fallen down :)

One of my favorite tracks as well. I see the two background choir voices as male (Asgore) and female (Toriel), because their stories are connected to the humans who have fallen down. The music, just like their stories are suffocating melancholy that turns into hope and joy.

i heard this song not long after a close family member passed away. I was in highschool at the time and undertale was just becoming big, I broke down and couldnt even stand without help because the emotions i felt were so strong from this. Its truly the best song in the OST in my opinion and a top 5 in all video game music for me personally

I love chiptunes in general, but especially in modern music it's only used by conscious choice. It has its own function as an instrument that COULD be replaced by more 'traditional' instruments, but doesn't NEED to be. it holds its own thematic and emotional merits, moreso now that it isn't the only way to have music in games

Something that i really love about the first half of this song is that we are introduced to four voices. The voices that, to me, represent the four primary characters in the story. Chara, Asriel, Toriel, and Asgore. It opens with the two voices dancing alongside one another, representing the two children. Both mirror eachother like siblings. Then, the two deeper voices come in representing the parents. Each pair is similar yet distinct, creating some mild tension and representing how we have these interconnected characters each causing change in ways that reflect their personalities. Then, with the reprise, i feel we get to hear a plethora of different voices that begin to represent the characters that get swept up in this story.

As a man that is suposedly musicaly inclined, I have not used it other than to enjoy music. But near the beginning an instrument leaves song for a little bit making it tell me a story of how you feel alone in the world then when he brings it to the 27 sec mark the "singing" part almost feels like a mother singing to her child informing you its okay and not to cry. Then near the end the song obviously gets more up beat. Idk if you cared but thats my take.

The chiptune vs orchestration thing is, I think, about approachability. An orchestra is dozens or more people all working on...well...concert...with each other. It's big and organised and special. But it's far from intimate with the amount of work that goes into just making it happen. A chiptune feels more intimate because it *feels* like there's less involved. It *could* be one person with a sound device making it all. It's stripped back, smaller and does not feel like a giant organisation was involved in making it. And thus more personal and achievable.

I am of the opinion that music when played in a different key has a different emotional effect. I think the reason the chiptune works so well in this is it's simplicity reminding us of a simpler time in our childhoods, and that serves to elevate this simple but effective track into something much mure resonant than real instruments would be in this case

Interestingly enough, this song always felt sad for me. An intense feeling of longing and wistfulness fills the song. But the last few seconds of the song, where it resolves, paints a different story, as if reminiscing about a time with a long-gone friend, right before they appear in front of you, reuniting at last.

Toby fox is honestly one of the greatest musicians and storytellers of our time. Capturing pure emotion in song. And not just simple emotions like fear or happiness any decent musician can do that. but those complex intimate ones. love, nostalgia, melancholy, childhood friendship, safety, longing, playfulness. Feelings you can’t ever explain with words but Toby knows. He feels and through his music he lets us feel them too. I’ve always described undertale as the memory of a childhood adventure we had in a different life. Brand new places, new friends, a place to save and an innocence that nobody has to get hurt and everything can be alright if we just keep going. And listening to the music now as we get older feels like meeting all those friends we made on that adventure again. After life beat us down. Responsibility and drama and stress. We have these friends who we never knew but also know like family coming and making it all alright again. Reminiscing about the time the fish lady chased us with a spear or when the crazy robot made us do one of those cooking shows our parents watched. And of course the pie our mother baked when we got back from our crazy antics.

Hey MarcoMeatball, I just discovered your channel and I'm really liking your aproach and how you analyze the music and OSTs of videogames. I've beem glancing at the videos you've uploaded and there are a lot that I'm liking and I'm going to be watching them little by little. But what surprised me is that despite you having some Mass Effect and even some less known video games, you haven't done anything on Dragon Age, Ratchet & Clank or Kingdom Hearts, which at least I personally think it's a shame as I think they are ones of the best games even more on an OST and music perspective, and I think a lot of people would like to hear from you about them, and I would definetively love it xD. And if you haven't played them, absolute recommendation. But well, if for whatever reason you aren't interested, it is what it is. Still think your analysis are awesome, keep up the good work, really love how you appreciate the feelings ant intentions behind the music, as the happines and reunion you see here in "Fallen Down". And well, that's kinda it, hope you have a nice day.
