This one is short and sweet but genuinely a doozy. Children of the Omnissiah is a powerful piece full of reflective and melodic choral singing. Couple that with the organ, it really gives us the feeling of being in an unholy setting. It's ravishing in its use of the lower notes and basses while also giving us this feeling of coming face to face with out maker. Powerful piece by Guillaume David.

The Omnissiah is the literal Machine-God that the Adeptus Mechanicus believe in. The intro to Mechanicus should give you a very good understanding of how the machine cult thinks. ;) I'd love to see your reaction to just seeing that intro for the first time. Also, merry christmas :D

So the song "Noosphere" you reacted to awhile back is from this same game. The Cult of the Omnissiah, better known as the Adeptus Mechanicus, is the Imperium of Mans technological heart, a cult where invention and creativity is heretical and banned, and a cult dedicated to becoming ever closer to the Omnissiah, the Machine God. Hadron from Darktide is one of these Cultists, known to the Wider Imperium as Tech-Priests, with the higher ranks known as Magos or Magi. They manufacture and guard the designs of the mighty weapons the Imperium uses to wage war from Forge Worlds across the galaxy, from the humble lasgun to the mighty Titans, with the main home of the Cult being Mars, and the Cult is led by the Fabricator-General of Mars, who also sits on the Imperial High Council known as the High Lords of Terra.

Yeah, I don't know why is WH40K considered "absurd sci-fi". I consumed a lot of sci-fi of various sub genres over the years, and apart from some cyberpunk settings (near future) and hard sci-fi (like the Expanse, again near future), WH40K is the most realistic representation of a far future and galactic scale I have ever seen in any setting. True, warp and its associated gods and demons - not realistic. But everything else? More realistic than main settings of that scale, like Star Wars and Star Trek. Its scale, the relation between various factions within the Imperium and outside of it, how everything functions... on point. Also takes into consideration more actual laws of physics and passage of time than any other far-future franchise, and delves deeply into the meaning of myth, what is to be a human, the importance of symbols and how things morph over time, how yesterday's practice becomes tomorrow's religion... I know the setting came as a caricature of the Dune series and added some other sci-fi tropes, but in the end, it became the most captivating and realistic representations of a far future human society in pop culture. To call it absurd is to not recognize fully the terrible scale of the galaxy and humanity in it. Hands down, my favorite sci-fi franchise. And grim dark are just the main stories we are given, as they represent the main conflict areas. The overall setting is not that dark. On many human worlds life goes on normally, they barely even know that there are demons, space marines etc. around, they just heard something about some Emperor somewhere that they "serve". Again, the galaxy is VAST! And WH40K represents that in an amazing way.

Something I feel many people dont mention is that this song begins with a growing sense of "ancient wonder", but then instead goes for a very urgent organ piece, which I think stays in most other Mechanicus songs, they all have a sense of time running out. This makes perfect sense: this is the starting song for the game menu, when it's all just a routine expedition to plunder ruins for secrets... until the inhabitants wake up. Now the game is a literal race against the clock before the army of the Necrons wakes up and becomes a monumental threat to the Imperium.

I always thought of that super low rumble throughout the song as the whirr or growl of an engine, seeing as the worshippers of the omnissiah revere machinery. I can hear all kinds of sort of factory sounds in this song (not literally, but the feeling thereof). Although, I go at warhammer sound tracks and music from the perspective of someone who knows a whole load of lore for almost every faction

There is this strange sense of awe and tranquility in pondering dark and dystopian settings. I like to listen to "blade runner atmosphere with city sounds" here on KZbin. It too features occasional dystopian sci-fi sounds, but in a weird way evokes quite a contradictory feeling. I feel like I'm floating through this strange, dangerous universe, but completely invisible and untouched by any danger. Maybe it's that contrast of danger yet safety, corruption yet holiness, dystopia yet tranquility, that somehow intrigues or inspires us.

I Think that the rolling mass effect reaper-easque noise is also meant to convey the ultimate pride of mechanicus war machines, the Titans, some of which are literally walking churches, piloted by crews that are linked to them. every noise is a deliberate movement, a litany of las or plasma shots that with the power to melt cities and other titans. I love that these notes are not clear, they seem to come from far away, because titans engage from far far away.

I have to agree with you, I feel there is a real sense of sadness and loss from this music. The time of the Imperium's golden age is long past and the Adeptus Mechanicus can feel it too. So much knowledge lost, perhaps never to be recovered.
@DiabloDelMer1

The glorious machinations of the Machine God bless us this day, Marco delivers once more! Praise be that he would choose to immortalize his exposure to this litany most sacred! In doing so, he shares with us his knowledge and too reinforces the Omnissiah's virtue within Holy-Terra's all encompassing networks. With that out of the way, I'm quite glad you'd give this song a listen. It's a wonderful introduction to both the Mechanicus the game and the faction. I love the game and love its music even more. Notably, I hope you're still willing to give more of the soundtrack a listen. Caestus Metalican, for example, is the favorite of mine that no one mentions. Its the follow up to Children of the Omnissiah and I'd argue serves as the true prefix to the actual game. As such it provides a fully, more varied experience. Plus is simply an amazing song. Also, regarding you saying "Is there to remind the humanity that existed", wanna hear a funny irony? The majority of Mechanicus do not believing in the shedding of humanity; and actively despise the notion. While they believe that through the machine they can ascend their decaying form, they firmly believe in the divinity of humanity as divined by the Omnissiah. So even if they completely augment themselves, doing away and replacing organs and replacing limbs with all sorts of mechanical augmentation, they still aim to keep a (relatively) human shape. In fact, most seem to merely replace the human frame with something more robust and then add on to, because to do otherwise is to spit in the face of the Omnissiah's most holy design, being the human body. Though, arguably their belief in the divine human form is a superficial one, giving how utterly inhuman your average Techpriest is. The Cog-men are still far more cog than they are men.

Oh YES! I have been imagining this and your reaction! And i do agree, this song is surprisingly scary and inspiring with the feeling of faith and holiness. You feel the power of the faith the Mechanicus have. But i also feel a bit of ‘playfulness’ in it. I’m probably colouring it with my own perception, but it reminds me of Donkey Kong County 2 music. The whole pirate adventure theme and all that, the feeling of exploration or adventure also feels there. A naive and childish feeling that just can’t leave my mind when this song plays. It adds this feeling of careless adventure, something along the story about a bunch of kids playing with something they shouldn’t. Power’s they shouldn’t. But what’s the harm? Maybe that’s because I played the game and am linking it all together, but it just stands out for me. It’s that feeling of timelessness like you said, you feel like it’s a story we all know… but get to hear again.
@mrrodgers0

What you're getting at I think really conveys the Mechanicum's primary mission within the Imperium as a polity (not just a military)- to explore the galaxy and rediscover/catalogue as much technology from the Golden/Dark Age as they possibly can. People often find it weird that the Mechanicum is so closed to innovation and invention, but what need do they have for such things when all they would make already exists, waiting to be rediscovered in some ruins somewhere?
@thedarkwolf67
@thedarkwolf67 Жыл бұрын
@@mrrodgers0 Hit the nail on the head! I think a lot about what each faction is like, and typically judge them as their complete own culture and society. I mean… it’s basically what each legion is at the base roots. I do wander into the relm of fantasy that would probably be outside of what actually happens, but i think we also forget the 30k era and what makes each faction unique. Seeing the mechanicus as explorers just fits perfectly, i think it adds a real sense of ‘culture’ in a facton that isn’t direct zealotry. 40k wasn’t always war!

I love this song. It captures the beauty in the darkness of 40k very well. The greatest tragedy of the 40k setting is all of the potential you can see wasted on war and cycles of destruction. In this song it's captured by the soprano contrasted against the almost predatory machine growl of the lower notes. good stuff. Your comments about retaining humanity are also interesting given that the player controls the leader of the Mechanicus expedition's decisions and he often discusses how he as a commander refused to remove his empathy completely and still has emotional reactions to the deaths of those under his command.
