One of the core themes explored with the Golden Order is that they are an eternally tyrannical establishment to all whom they don't protect (and why Rykard and the Recusants were a monstrous reflection of that where it would eventually spread to consume the world). So long as your side can portray the thing that they're fighting against as "evil" it's easy to portray your own side as heroic and righteous. This is also why the intro also explicitly mentions that when Gold arose Shadow was born from the same affair, as they're merely two sides of the exact same thing - hence Miquella's abandonment of his gold, strength, & fate in an attempt to eschew the entirety of that power structure that represents that inescapable duality of light & darkness between Gold & Shadow which are the two colors in all of the Runes.

To me, Marika's scene with the background of the Elden Beast OST stresses just how horrifying the rise of the Golden Order was. The second scene with Messmer shows the truth of how Marika's order was established. By genocide, and something so horrifying that it "could never be put to song". Those are the two sides of the coin - the connection with the cosmos and the beastly nature of power. For all of the talk we hear about the Golden Order being natural, the truth of the matter is that it was a construct created and enforced by violence. Messmer probably did something so messed up that Marika distanced herself from his actions and banished him. The scene with Miquella feels almost like a kid trying to unfu*k the wrongs of his parents. Hopeful. Moving forward. Uplifting.
@gunnarschlichting98865 ай бұрын
My personal theory is that Messmer was a willing scapegoat. He looks like the Golden Order version of the anti-christ (flames, snakes, dragon communion) and it's almost guaranteed that the Erdtree has already been burnt down once before (currently an illusion, ash in the Capitol before we burn the tree). I believe it was likely Marika's plan (unsure of the details yet, hopefully the dlc will provide), and that Messmer willingly went along with it, so to those who know the truth he is a martyr.

One fact a lot of people don't know: A KZbinr by the name of Antonius Tertius went through the trouble of getting into contact with various music producers and singers who worked on Elden Ring- to discover more about the faux-Latin used in the game. When researching 'The Final Battle', the producer of the Elden Beast's theme actually confirmed that when he was producing the track, it was produced under the title "Marika". Perhaps you could consider it as another signifier to the identity of the first person in the trailer.

Your Question a 7:00 where you ask who those are, I think those are people that were in the Lion Dancer outfit that had just attacked Mesmer in the previous shot. It could also be other corpses impaled of the civilization that they are killing off. I think this story trailer shows "beginning, middle, and the present": I think the beginning part is Marika(or Radagon) rise to godhood the sudden cut to Mesmer's music I think implies that that accession either cost those lives of that city OR led to the culling of that city, and it's a act done in secrecy as to not have a blemish on the perfect golden order OR to prevent someone from rising to take vengeance or to steal back whatever power Marika may have stolen and the Final piece is definitely Miquella coded, with hope.

Disclaimer : English is not my native language ! If I had to see the sopranos in this trailer, they all seem to convey (for me) a cry for help in each part. First the cry to godly deing (to the Greater Will since the OST is from the Elden Beast) and you made me noticed the tremolo in the voice and it may go with this feeling of "O greatest of gods, thou had seen our sufferings thou had seen our bloodshed. Let us shine in your golden rays, let us not deprave into chaos again.". It goes also with the "sense of grief" you had mentioned in your Elden Beast OST video. For Mesmer's part, it would be a cry from Messmer's victims in my point of view. The interesting line would be "One [war] that could never be put to song" and since we here someone singing. And I feel like it is again a cry, maybe not for mercy, but again a plead for help. Since the organ is the first instrument to appear with the soprano, I would see it as a sort of counterpoint to the sopranos (maybe representing Messmer ? It goes well with your idea of organ representing the sacrilegious ). We also have seen that Fromsoft has well used the organ to represent the unholy and twist on the 'pure faith' (looking at Laurence's theme from Bloodborne). Also I don't think organ is used elsewhere in Elden Ring, even the Godskin apostles, which shows how "unholy" Messmer might be. The idea of the cry goes well with the crescendo (at least for me) from 1:20 with the chords (not sure if it is cello or violins) but you add the undulating percussions that you pointed out and I can see it representing slashes/warfare (especially with the imagery, and they did that with Ludwig). This time the cry sounds more like : "O witness our suffering, o you who witness history, beware of Messmer's flame and peer into our suffering." The crescendo at 2:07 in the vocals would be some kind of cry for the death of St Trina's (? not confirmed) and Miquella's Fate. But transforming into a cry of determination or help towards Miquella (multiplication of voices as in gathering troops). This time, contrary to Messmer's theme, the soprano isn't alone but with a whole orchestra. The church bell might either some sort of tocsin (bell sound to inform the town that war is coming) and peace incoming. The only voice remaining also reminded me of the religiousity especially of a "Kyrie Eleison" which would praise Miquella. I was really waiting for your analysis of the almost musical triptych with the guiding soprano and, as usual, love how you did analyse everything !

Given the massive purge that Messmer is doing for which we are waiting to find out more: "Snakes" are as well frowned upon and if you look Messmer is accompanied by them which makes his character all the more interesting.

I feel that the soprano in Messmer's section symbolize the "holy" pretense behind the horrific slaughter of this war. Messmer, as we know it now, is most likely a son of Marika, carrying out a systemic genocide of the Land of Shadows' old population, probably as a cover up for the initial "seduction and betrayal" that allowed Marika to become the Goddess. The music then is a devilish and infernal tune, trying to mask itself with holyness and righteousness Most of the times the OSTs from these trailers are taken from in game Bossfights, so it's probable that Messmer's section is his own bossfight OST and the final section is Miquella's
@ongabonga43785 ай бұрын
Based on his red hair, and mention of "mother" in the previous trailer, it seems he is an offspring of Marika and Radagon. His war is "without grace or honor" because of his relation to and affinity for fire, snakes, and possibly even dragon communion. All symbols of blasphemy towards the erdtree. He is most likely laying siege to the land of shadow to regain the favor of the erdtree and the golden lineage. The soprano represents this intent, and the organ represents his malicious nature.
@ongabonga43785 ай бұрын
I've also heard speculation that the "mother" he speaks of is the blasphemous serpent Eigley. This holds some weight, but I feel that the 3 butterflies are good evidence against this theory. Malenia is the rot, Miquella is the nascent, and Messmer is the smouldering butterfly.

Then the music seemingly turns to reflect his/hers Godly, fearsome and terrifying powers showing a scene of St:Trina (allegedly), falling, perhaps having been separated from Miquella. It ends with what sounds like a mix between determination and celebration, with the bells giving the vibe of a holy crusade, which makes me think these followers of Miquella are close to religious fanatics. Miquella is supposedly wielding love to shrive clean the hearts of men after all, he has learned to compel such an affliction. I guess it gives a pretty nuanced picture of Miquella, which is very cool! I can’t wait to play the DLC!

Marika's Lament is played during times of ultimate tragedy in parts of Marika's life like at the end of her life and the fight with The Elden Beast, the end of Her story like the end of Elden Ring (Which IMO the story is about Marika), and now we see her latest tragedy, Marika's Lament plays during Marika's God hood. Her God hood is a tragedy. Maybe She was forced to do this? It was her fate? This trailer was utterly fascinating to me. Pardon my rambling, but I believe the three pieces here represent the motifs of Marika, Messmer, and Miquella, and what role they will play in the DLC. The distorted nature of Elden Beast's theme here, as well as the almost-scornful/mocking way the narrator says "an affair from which gold arose", as well as the visual setting of the scene suggests a blasphemous truth Marika determined to keep hidden. Messmer's piece is much more straightforward, with all the usual Fromsoft bells and whistles for an evil character. Organ, benevolent choirs, etc. Miquella's piece is the most intriguing. The children choir reflects Miquella's eternal youth, and the forward propulsion rhythm shows his determination to find the truth. The big thing here is the lullaby/hypnotic quality. Miquella is shown in lore to be well versed in using hypnosis. It is heavily implied that Saint Trina (deity of sleep and dreams) and Miquella are the same person. The musical texture reminds me of This Is What You Are from Warframe

Opera singer here, the last part of the music has really strong Puccini vibes. Sounds like the Te Deum from Tosca. What do you think ?

The line "we choose to follow" is so interesting because we know Miquella has a power over the hearts of people and can compel them to love him. So is it really a choice? I don't think so.

Also the music for Messmer in this trailer reminds me of the Mohg phase 2 music. It sounds regal and powerful, like a Lord marching across Hell filled with purpose.

Messmer is undoubtedly the villain, but I predict the reason will be because he is obsessed with gaining Marika's love. Some will argue that Messmer isn't entirely at fault because he committed the killings for his mother, who ultimately used and betrayed him. They might also suggest that Miquella, who received their mother's love instead of Messmer and is attempting to break free from her control over his fate (keeping him in a childlike body), is actually the ungrateful one.

We used to think that the Gloam Eyed Queen was a rival Empyrean that Marika needed fo defeat before she was chosen as the god to rule the next age. But this story showed us the truth: The Golden Order was created by usurping and purging the old world that was ruled by the Gloam Eyed Queen. Time and again we are shown that behind the beautiful flawless ray of gold of the Order is a long path of blood and suffering. We thought the primordial Crucible of Life was just the way of the old world, we never knew that there was an entire civilization built on it. And not only was it razed into the ground, it was erased from history The only thing that makes this reveal even worse, is the implication that this is not the first civilization the Greater Will has supplanted and may not be the last, as we saw in the Elden Beast arena. Not only are there more than one Erdtree, they are seen as far as the eyes can see

Could it be that Mesmer is the son of Marika and Placidusax? We know of a god and placidusax, being elden lord at some time, were together and formed the first elden ring. The god left placidusax never returning to him and placidusax stayed by himself forever waiting for that being to come back to him. What if it was Marika? She would then start a new elden ring while pregnant with Mesmer, hence his draconic look. She would start the age of the Crucible with her still experimenting with her power. Finally knowing what she really wanted life to look she would send Mesmer to purge the crucible to start a new elden ring, reforged from the ashes of the old one. Maybe at one point Mesmer and Marika's relationship would grow sour during the Purge and banished him into this veiled realm and deemed everything about him heretical, fire, serpents, and dragon communion. We know that in Sekiro the white serpent is some sort of descendant of the Divine Dragon and in some cultures, serpents were considered dragons, even the chinese dragons resemble a serpent in their movements and looks. Maybe Marika was really trying to erase him. Or he could find out about his father and goes into a frenzy. Killing everything his mother created and trying to bring Farum Azula into this new world and at the end of the purge, Marika would defeat him and banish him into this veiled realm he destroyed. Eh might be reaching, sounds cool though.

I believe the very beginning was Marika plucking the strands of the Elden Ring out of it's previous host - the Gloam Eyed Queen. Thus ascending to Godhood herself. To ascend to Godhood, Marika had her Generals (Godfrey and apparently Messmer) wage a ruthless war with the forces of the Crucible (the Primordial version of the Erdtree) being the Omen, the Crucible Knights and the Gloam Eyed Queen - who leads the Godskin Apostles (those bodies were all flayed - skinless) Messmer seems to be the one that does all the Dirty work for Marika, impaling and burning all those who're considered as blasphemous to the Golden Order. I believe that Messmer is simply truthfully following Marika's orders, but is forced to stay in the Realm of Shadow by his very own Mother. Those corpses are most likely the Lion Dancers, who we believe to be Omen (and thus Crucible aligned) due to the omen horns you can see throughout it's body. I believe that Miquella is following in Marika's footsteps to ascend to Godhood. All so that he can find a true Cure for his twin(Malenia)'s curse of Scarlet Rot. To do this, he takes a page out of Ranni's book and divests himself of his Empyrean flesh (he dies during Mohg's corruption). The NPCs and us the player are following Miquella as well, possibly as champions to help him ascend to Godhood, much like how Messmer or Godfrey fought for Marika to ascend. This would also probably give us a new ending for the main game as well.

Miquella's ability is to compel love from anyone. Likely these followers are brainwashed and trying to get us to walk with them, and we'll end up having to walk through them. My speculation. I doubt Fromsoft would emphasize this power and then never show it.

In the last song the signer is talking about marika, isn't it? it says "Marika eternam". I'm guessing that we follow miquella's footsteps but Miquella came to the land of shadow because that's where she became a god, so maybe it's more of a religious theme?

I was seeing a lot about the vocals in the second section when it transitions out of the mesmer section into that sort of forward hopeful part. Supposedly its latin and the singer is saying “ Ave marika aeternum” so something like hail marika the eternal and then they say something else that I was wondering if anyone knew what the singer is saying

I wonder what marika's plan exactly is. does she want to show of the horrors in the hope we go the same path or does she wont to show the mistakes she made.

Miquella was committed to giving a chance to the omens who where rejected by Marika, seems like those lion type omens were living in a kind of Haligtree created by Miquella to protect them and Messmer was sent by Marika to exterminate them.
