YES!!! This goes for almost all Overwatch characters. My 100% most beloved and favorite character in this games universe is Sigma. I love that he at least got an origin story. I am kinda disappointed and sad, that they never did anything with him since his release. Same goes for half of the characters for overwatch. Sigma was different for me tho, him being such a S-tier character and I can relate quite a bit with him. Ngl, kinda got a little mad that kiriko and Junker Queen got a cinematic right off the bat while my boy has been sitting here for x amount of years. Anyway, I'd love a TV show with the animation of these cinematics. With the idea of every character gets a season all to themselves would be soo good! Soo...Sombra or Sigma, Baptiste or someone has an entire season all about them.

She's this combination of the spiritual teachings from her grandmother and the fighting skills from her mother. She's not stuck in either path and uses both to be a support that can kick your butt.

BTW Kiriko’s mother taught the two sons of Sojiro Shimada everything they know about using a sword. As Kiriko’s mother taught Hanzo and Genji, Kiriko tagged along to their lessons and also learned how to fight herself.

While you are talking about the musical elements, I LOVE some of the visual details in this trailer. Like at 7:52 in your clip, where Kiriko is at the end of the hallway, declaring 'I'm gonna kick every one of you, in the face." She's actually not looking at them. She's got her head down slightly, to hide her identity a bit, but because of the fox hat the little girl gave her, the alignment makes it like she has no human eyes, and it's the Fox's eyes (on the hat/mask) staring directly at them. She's actively putting on a "mask" as it were, to intimidate her foes. The way she blots out the lights to make it dark, and how she releases the smoke to further conceal her actions. It's all stealth and deception style actions. But then at 9:15 she's done hiding. The Fox Spirit within her, AND her are in perfect harmony in their shared anger at these thugs. She's no longer hiding her face, she's REVEALING it, with the actual Fox Spirit staring back at the gangsters THROUGH her glowing eyes. How she begins to move in ways that are very animalistic, like at 9:22 , when she leaps and basically wallruns over and behind the thug to leap at him from behind, her profile looks very much like a fox with it's tail streaming out. How every declaration of her anger and defiance at their violence further illuminates the hallway (and claims ownership of it through her magical power, coating the entire combat area in her blue spirit energy, indicating an environmental dominance), how her eyes pulse with her words, like she can barely contain the anger of the spirit inside her, and it keeps bursting out in the form of the spirit gates. And then, she just straight up claims ownership of that hallway as her territory. And then when the grandfather and little girl rise up, their eyes are glowing as well, because she's gifted them with the power and protection of her Fox Spirit. And how once it's all done, and the civilians look down the hallway at Kiriko, she's back to being in shadow, and as the Fox Spirit calms down and returns to it's dormant state, you see the Torii gates recede towards her, like she's drawing the spirit power back into her, with the final gate fading directly around her. And a tiny but funny detail to me, how she keeps her word, and does indeed kick every one of them in the face. 🤣 Just SUCH good visual storytelling and detail! I love this trailer so much.

The name for the rap track of this cinematic is "Bow" and it's super modern but also possibly referring to Hashimoto forces bowing before the power of the fox spirit, and Kiriko's faith in that spirit. Very great use!

I've watched this cinematic several times now. I've also only recently discovered your channel and am glad I did as I also have a love for music and pay attention to the different melodies and tones played throughout; it does indeed help the audience embrace and understand the characters and video better. With that said, when you mentioned the melodious change with Kiriko's mother at the end, I realized I missed that change in tone (was too engrossed in the actual video haha). I picked up what you said about it bringing a "home like warmth" and "motherly love". I actually teared up a bit and felt the emotion during this video when you mentioned those subtle changes! Music makes me very emotional. I don't sing because I sound like frozen rubber being dragged across broken glass, but I love playing Piano, Guitar, Violin and I'm now learning Saxophone (although I'm not quite a fan of that Jazz type sound). I've watched several of your videos of League of Legends like Kindred and Fiddlesticks. You have convinced me to subscribe sir! o7

I didn't notice that before because previous times I haven't really paid any attention to he music but in the dialogue between Kiriko and her mother, whenever mother is leading the conversation it's the traditional japanese instrument playing but whenever Kiriko is in the lead, it's the playful piano.

Amazing analysis as always, on the topic of Overwatch animated shorts, I recommend reacting to "The Last Bastion" since there is no dialogue nor spoken lines all of the story and emotion is told and conveyed by an amazing musical track and amazing sound design throughout the short. I believe it is worth a watch!

Of the music, I think one of the more understated things is the melody that plays when Kiriko mends the cut on her cheek. It coasts through the quiet tenderness just enough, as if to say "You know what? Everything is actually going to be okay." As an expert of musical theory, I'm sure you know of a more eloquent way to describe that feeling I just mentioned. I just felt like it bears pointing out, since I feel it's what helps provide that capstone to the cinematic short that cements the ending as a happy one

I also like how the music is introduced as if it's the elevator music. It doesn't really kick in, until after the doors open on Kiriko's face, and you see her swaying back and forth, like she was vibing to the music. And then it continues as she walks down the hall.

Actually I did not expected this to get a an analysis from Marco but damn, thank God you did. 🙏 This Overwatch cinematic is by far the best from Blizzard. The last one was in my opinion the Hanzo and Genji's cinematic. Still lives strong to this day. But regarding this cinematic, I counted, Marco blinked at maximum of 4-5 times at that Kiriko Ascension phase. That was a surprise for us all when most of us first saw it. But the face reaction was priceless. 😄

If you want to check out more Overwatch cinematics (which I highly recommend, they're a lot of fun) you should be aware that most of them are relatively independent stories just in the same world, but a few have a certain order: Start with "Overwatch Cinematic Trailer" then "Recall" After those first two you can do the Overwatch 1 cinematics in pretty much any order (just put "Alive" before "Infiltration") AFTER you have seen all of the other Overwatch 1 cinematics watch "Zero Hour" So far you don't need to see any of the first game's cinematics to enjoy the Overwatch 2 cinematics, but future ones might call back to the older cinematics.

Overwatch always have great music and sound design. Its one of the biggest contributor to how the game plays and feels. Outside of the cinematics, each map has it own OST, inspired by the real life location the map is based on, usually with a modern/futuristic twist.

So it starts at 8:57 and i think its wonderful sound work. Kiriko is angry at this point but has too hold it in for the sake of the old man and little girl. But if you listen closely the hiss of the ruptured extinguisher is slowly getting louder. As she stands there and checks on the old man it keeps getting louder and louder until it hits the peak and her eyes turn that electric blue. At 9:15 it actually melds with both the old mans heart beat and the background music to mesh with the incoming music.
