The thing about a lot of Mick's Doom music is that it doesn't play in a continuous loop like a normal soundtrack. It's made up of many different segments which are mixed together into the OST release. But in game it'll actively react to what you're doing in game. Imagine the music drops hard when you fire your first shot in a fight, but after you finish the last demon, it transitions to the suspenseful build up until the next fight inevitably happens. That's probably also why it took so so much effort for Mick to mix the soundtrack into an OST album.
@vadernation1233
@vadernation1233 10 ай бұрын
It’s true mick put a ton of effort into the soundtrack but stems are nothing new nor are they exclusive to doom. A lot of modern games utilize stems, some with more stems than others. Hell I heard that red dead 2 has so many stems it sounds like a live orchestra is playing for you.

It feels like the music is in a constant state of build up and it never drops, it holds you in suspense and it gives you a constant feeling of unease without the pay off. Just like in the game there's no point where you can really rest, you're always fighting, running and killing and the music shows this Very well.

Mick Gordon went out of his way to gather a wide variety of metal singers for the DOOM Choir. A variety in both vocal timbres as well as a variety of vocalists from different metal subgenres. And by doing so, he gabe Hell a voice that is burned into our memory. Mick's music is why DOOM 2016 and Eternal was so good, without his experimental music, DOOM would be a shooter with good gunplay. With his music, DOOM has a drive, a tempo, a tone and force that makes it an experience. It really was a music album with a free game attached. Which makes how Bethesda treated him after being the big selling point for DOOM Eternal so much more cruel.

YES. FIANLLY. You HAVE to go through the whole thing, Damnation isn't even the biggest hit. Not to mention DOOM Eternal. But Marco, careful, there are many versions of these songs because of how there are both gamrips and versions manually edited by mick gordon to be listened outside the game

The chorus is actually throughout the entire song, except for one part (you just pass it around 2:43) though they're more making like a aaaaaAAAaaaaAA sound through most of it. Its during that part that they're not there that you really notice them, because without them, despite the loud beats, that part sounds strangely silent.

Yeah it's not that rare for metal bands (ranging from heavy or symphonic metal to black or death metal subgenres) to incorporate choirs and orchestras in their music (live as well) but that's just regular music not game music.

By lore the Doom Slayer has fought for thousands of years pretty much continuously. His armor restoring his health, stamina, equipment and ammunition directly from the bodies and souls of his enemies as he kills them. Rarely resting, not even pausing for the normal bodily needs of food, water or rest, like some sort of literal incarnation of violence. And like you said, the music perfectly captures how that plays out in the gameplay, which itself, fully captures the mythology of the character.
@vadernation1233
@vadernation1233 10 ай бұрын
Good to see someone actually diving deep into these songs especially Damnation. This is definitely my favorite song from the series it’s so good. I always took it as the theme of the slayer from the demon’s POV. The mix you listened to doesn’t have it but there’s some segments of the track that have even more of the choir and they’re soooo good they always felt like the demons crying out to those still alive to get out and to run. Even one of the mellower points that plays every time you clear an arena in levels with this track that’s a choir cover of the classic track sign of evil and it’s like the demons lamenting the loss of their comrades at the hands of the slayer. Such a good song. Perfectly captures there’s no escape from the slayer. He is the Damnation they must endure.
@TehCakeIzALie1
@TehCakeIzALie1 Жыл бұрын
A cool thing that's missing from the OST version of this track is that when the track finishes in-game (at the end of the arena sections of hell IIRC) a chorus comes in with the melody from E1M8 from the original DOOM. DOOM 2016 is full of little nods to the original game's soundtrack, and this was the first one I consciously recognized.

@3:04 "Who's adding chorus to heavy metal music?" Definitely tonnes of metal bands. Symphonic and operatic music have been a big part of metal, especially in Europe, very long time. Just off the top of my head, the Swedish metal band, Therion is very heavily symphonic and make very heavy use of choirs and soloists. They released a new song recently, Twilight Of The Gods. But if you want to see the band play with an orchestra and choirs live, check out The Miskolc Experience. It was two sets: the first being popular classical pieces, and the second being original Therion songs.

BFG Division is great to listen to on my own time but in-game? This is the shit right here. This music only plays once you get transported to Hell for the first time (as opposed to tracks like BFG Division, which only play during segments on Mars in high-tech future space facilities). It’s a complete shift in sonic character and I love it, it feels so biblically raw, like you should be terrified but instead it’s the demons that are terrified of YOU. “Holy shit, he’s back”

The “official” mixes of the songs have some songs mixed by mick (I think cultist base is one of them) and you can kinda tell which ones were done by mick and which were done by chad from the quality. He still made the music. There’s plenty of fans that have made excellent mixes of the doom eternal soundtrack and the DLCs by Levy and Hulshult which got no releases in any form that are really high quality that all 3 endorse openly. Two that come to mind are Koma and SLAD3. Koma got plenty of comments by mick and levy supporting this stuff. Some I feel are honestly better than Mick’s mixes for 2016 like SLAD3’s Damnation mix is even better than the one here which was Mick’s.
