It's musically a gorgeous version. Personally I prefer the original Frances Rufelle version, though. While musically inferior, I find that actually suits the character better. In general that's what I like about the Original London Cast. It seems to fit the story better. Some of the later versions were too polished to my liking.

“I was in an environment where there were a lot of singers were celebrated for being belters. That made me ask myself back then, ‘Where do I fit in because I don’t really do this-my voice quality is really different.’ Do I have a place in music? But then Miss Saigon happened and that was where my voice found its fit.” Lea is not really known for high belting. She’s known for the quality of her voice, her proper technique without ruining her voice- she’s gone thru that during first year of MS. She’s made a name in the industry that songs are adjusted or written for her.

As wonderful as Lea is, Frances Ruffelle is the definitive Eponine, winning the Tony and Olivier awards years before Lea came to the States... and Eponine was beloved because of her plaintiff existence, and because of this song that many women had sung well before Lea came along.
@jp38137 ай бұрын
@@normcummings1967 I believe that Ruffelle hasn't won an Olivier award yet. Everyone has their own definitive Les Miz characters. But Frances revealed in a 2010 interview that she was never asked to take part in this "Dream Cast" 10th anniversary concert despite her good relationship w/ Cameron Mackintosh. By the time Samantha Barks came around in the 25th anniversary concert where both Lea & Frances also performed, the debates were mostly focused on Lea vs Sam. Though those arguments have died down after it became evident that this video of Lea's performance is the most popular Les Miz clip of all time outside of talent show uploads.

There's a video of 18 year old Lea (she totally looked 14) auditioning and doing her first casting (or whatever it's called) and she even asks the composer (or lyricist, not sure what he did) for his signature on a Les Mis poster.

Lea Salonga, and this song and version in particular, is the reason I am married to my love. She is a Filipina and for a while we had split up. Something she did hurt me terrible but in the end not total. Hearing this music allowed me to forgive what she had done and begin talking to her again. We celebrated 22 years back in September.

I would like to mention, that the reason for Lea’s classic approach to her diction is also because she’s classically trained. There was a time when she was still in Miss Saigon where her voice was starting to get tired, so in order to save her voice she was trained classical technique. She had great diction prior anyway, but the classical technique she was taught I think also solidified her foundation when singing

Being a filipino doesn't mean english is not your first language... Actually high society don't talk in local dialect. They teach kids english first then the local dialect. May it be tagalog or anything. As you see... The earlier you teach kids to talk in english, they will not have an accent which categories english speaking asians.

@@tyroneloki5131 Apparently the oligarch's third family (as he ranked them -- the families were concurrent, not consecutive, at least according to one video floating around out there). The parents were never married, and after age five, she and her brother were raised mostly by their mother. I'm guessing English was the first language.
