The old man piloting the boat is the real-life son of the young German sailor. He was the last survivor of the sinking. The pocket compass - with the coordinates of the wreck etched inside - was given to his dad by the Captain Lindemann as he lay dying in the bridge. All of the medals and Bismarck certificates you saw on the wall in the opening scene belonged to the older guy's father.

@@samuel10125 Lutjens took no action at the Denmark Straits, it was Lindemann who acted as the original poster stated. He is wrong about that watch though. Nobody really knows how Lindemann died. Some say he was last seen holding onto the Jack Staff on the front of the ship (impossible), it had been removed at the outset of the operation, others claim he ended up in the water. One thing's for sure, nobody on the front half of the ship survived the sinking, so how a watch could have been on the bridge and not went down with the ship is a bit of a mystery.

The "Bismarck" , and his sister ship "Tirpitz", were the 2 largest battleships ever built in Europe (250 meters long, 36 meters wide, and displacing more than 50.000 tones) and they were the pride of the kriegsmarine (Germany's militari navy) during ww2. The "Bismarck" set sail in May 1941 to reach the Atlantic and destroy merchant convoys, but he was intercepted by the British and during a brief fight, destroyed the former flagship of the British fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, the worldwide famous battlecruiser "Hood", by penetrating her armor and detonating her aft main ammunition magazine and killing all 1400 members of her crew except for 3 men, and heavily damaged the battleship "Prince of Wales". This enraged the prime minister Winston Churcil who ordered all his ships in the Atlantic to abandon their operations and destroy the Bismarck. In total more than 40 ships participated to the hunt, making it the biggest naval hunt in history. Meanwhile Bismarck, who had received a hit during the first battle, was leaking fuel and was trying to reach the French port of Saint Nazaire, in occupied France, for repair. After 3 days of playing cat and mouse with the British, Bismarck was attacked by airplanes launched from the aircraft carrier "Ark Royal" and hit by a torpedo in the stern, which jammed his rudders during evasive manuvers, meaning that he was forced to sail in circles, just a few miles away from reaching air cover. In the end battleships "King George V" and "Rodney", along side the heavy cruisers "Norfolk" and "Dorsedshire" fought the already doomed battleship and, during the following 90 minutes completely destroyed it. However, despite having all his guns destroyed, and having received more than 400 hits (out of the 2800 shells that the British had fired at it) his armor was still mostly intact and the ship was still afloat. So the british launched another 4 torpedoes and he disappeared beneath the waves. After inspection of the wreck however it had been discovered that the torpedoes did no significant damage thanks to the battleship's extensive underwater protection, and that Bismarck had probably been scuttled by his crew (although it should be noted that many historians believe that it would have eventually sunk due to the damage received). Of the 2200 men that served on it only 114 survived

I have been a navy buff all my life and the story of the Bismark is always one that raises the emotions when showcased by such epic music as this. She may have been the flagship of the 'enemy' but she deserved a better end than she got, as did her crew. In part, I think the ship and her men paid the price for that lucky shot that blew up the Hood. Bismark's fate was sealed at that moment. The loss of life in naval engagements is often staggering. For example, Hood had a crew of about 1400 of which just 3 survived. Bismark was crewed by 2200 or so and less than 120 made it through the engagment.

Just to add some more historical info: The ship that Bismarck is first shown firing at when the song begins is the HMS Prince of Wales. Prince of Wales was one of a pair of capital ships that the British Royal Navy initially sent to intercept the Bismarck and her companion ship: the Prinz Eugen. The other ship that went with Prince of Wales was the battlecruiser HMS Hood. Hood was also one of the prides of the Royal Navy. After Hood was sunk by Bismarck, the Royal Navy became even more determined to bring Bismarck down. Which they succeeded in doing. Sabaton is easily one of my favorite bands and they show all sides of history.

@Maggie Reneé: First, as both a Navy vet and a World War II history buff, thank you for reacting to Bismarck! To clarify something: The old man in the video IS NOT the young man that survives the sinking of KMS Bismarck. The young man is the older man's father or grandfather, as I believe it was a year before this video was released, the young man in the video died -- and he was the final survivor of the Bismarck to pass away. That being said, the KMS Bismarck, up until the US Iowa-class battleships, was the largest in the world. He (not "she," as the Captain, as well as Adm. Karl Doenitz, the head of the Kriegsmarine, went against tradition and referred to Bismarck as "he," to which Sabaton gets right in the lyrics) had several 15" main guns, and a few 5" guns. While Bismarck had some AA (anti-air) guns, the engineers did not allow the anti-air guns to go above a certain height -- which hindered the air defenses. However, Bismarck was far from a weak ship, having reinforced armor in the midsection of the ship. Historians believe Bismarck actually did not sink from its ammo magazines being hit, but rather by Bismarck's crew scuttling him to keep him from falling into the hands of the British. Bismarck was the flagship of the German Navy, the Kriegsmarine. It's mission, after shakedown in 1940, was to patrol in the North Atlantic, and try and disrupt Allied shipping. During it's one mission -- which Doenitz did not get clearance from Hitler to send Bismarck on -- the Bismarck managed to sink, along with an escort with him named the Prinz Eugen (pronounced "yoy-gan"), the British Royal Navy's flagship, the HMS Hood. Later, the HMS Norfolk managed to hit a weakness of Bismarck's, the steering linkages, and prevent the battleship from turning properly. After this, Bismarck decided to try and make it to a French naval base controlled by the German Wehrmacht. Before he could make it, HMS Norfolk, HMS Suffolk, and 16 other Allied ships, mainly British, managed to engage Bismarck and sink him. One ship was so incensed at the loss of the Hood that it fired 4500 shells at Bismarck in only 3 hours, and had to be ordered to cease fire. As for other things in the video, what the young man held was the compass with the Bismarck's true coordinates of his last known position. Given it's size, it could have been a locket or a pocket watch, and the British were known to let survivors keep trinkets and momentos they had managed to save as POWs. At the end of the video, what is said is, "War knows no nation. This video is dedicated to all the men who fought to the bitter end in the Battle of the Atlantic." I'm putting this in a comment, since Sabaton has put in things and blocked part of the quote at the end. Now that you know the story of Bismarck, Maggie, I recommend two videos made in conjunction with the channel YarnHub: 1) The Night Witches 2) No Bullets Fly Because Sabaton has a very interesting way of teaching history -- and I daresay that Sabaton is the history teacher you didn't know you needed!

I think what is written on the inside of that pocket watch (I thinks its a pocket watch) are the latitude and longitude of the location the Bismarck sank: that biplane dropped the torpedo we see hit the Bismarck near the rear of the ship- that hit jammed the rudder and the Bismarck could only circle after that, which would give the ship's officers the location of where the ship was going sink because the British Fleet was closing in and there would be no chance of fixing it and the Bismarck could not fight the entire British fleet and survive.

He was holding a pocket watch at the end. On the morning of May 27 the King George V and the Rodney, in an hour-long attack, incapacitated the Bismarck, and an hour and a half later it sank after being hit by three torpedoes from the cruiser Dorsetshire. One torpedo which hit amidships caused no damage, but the second affected the rudders disastrously, jamming the port-side rudder at a 15-degree angle. Immediately, the Bismarck became no longer maneuverable. On the 8th of June, 1989, after combing an area of some 200 square miles, Ballard and his team finally found Bismarck's remains. The wreck lies in the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean some 470 miles west of Brest at a depth of 4,790 meters (15,700 feet). There were 2,000 lives lost that day.

And yes Sabaton really played on a boat in the "middle of nowhere". "From Wiki" (just a short version). Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched in February 1939. Work was completed in August 1940, when she was commissioned into the German fleet. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power. In the course of the warship's eight-month career under its sole commanding officer, Captain Ernst Lindemann, Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, lasting 8 days in May 1941, codenamed Rheinübung. The ship, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was to break into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. At the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the battlecruiser HMS Hood initially engaged Prinz Eugen, probably by mistake, while HMS Prince of Wales engaged Bismarck. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, which then damaged Prince of Wales and forced her retreat. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits to force an end to the raiding mission. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, heading for occupied France to effect repairs, Bismarck was attacked by 16 obsolescent Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship's steering gear inoperable. In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was severely damaged during a sustained engagement with two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, was scuttled by her crew, and sank with heavy loss of life. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June 1989 by Robert Ballard, and has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions..

Heh, since you recorded this I have seen Floor live (with Nightwish), and it's now less than a month until I get to see Sabaton (all being well)! There's plenty more to enjoy from Sabaton, my only warning is that when doing animated videos make sure to do the _story_ video, as sometimes there are multiple versions and the story videos are waaay better if you have any interest in the history _(No_ _Bullets_ _Fly_ and _Night_ _Witches_ are probably my favourites). Enjoy!

Ah, down the rabbit hole she goes. For example, my wife had never heard of Sabaton. I showed her this video, and away she went. She's a teacher, so she looked up Sabaton History, and we've seen Them live twice in the last couple of years. As far as the history lesson...that's what Sabaton does. Tells stories in powermetal. Christmas Truce and The Last Stand are two of my other top picks. (Bismarck is my personal favorite, but they have lots of good songs!)

Some people don't understand just how majestic and dangerous the Bismarck was. It's plating was so hard torpedos and convential guns couldn't get through it as is shown in the music video. A lucky shot hit the rudder of the ship, literally like a 1 in a million chance shot that forced the Bismarck to try to make port and it almost did, they lost track of it for awhile until a British ship accidentally came across it and then the British send a huge part of their navy to try to take it down and it took many ships attacking to finally sink it. They literally managed to sink it entirely by chance and it was so sturdy the ship didn't even break it just rolled over and fell into the ocean.

The songs To Hell and Back and 82nd All the Way are both very good songs about two of the most decorated American men in WWII and WWI respectively (Audie Murphy and Alvin York). The first song that I heard from Sabaton was called Panzerkampf regarding WWII tank battle between Germany and Russia. One of my favorites though is one of their more recent called Great War (from the album Great War). It gives a lot of behind-the-scenes perspective during the video.

Last September I saw Sabaton in Concert for the first time and it was epic. I would highly recommend seeing them in concert if you ever have a chance to see them. Also Jokim Broden Sabaton's lead singer was a guest singer in a song from Nanowar of Steel in the last couple of weeks. The song he is a guest in is called Pasadena 1994. This song is based on the Final World Cup Game in 1994 which was in Pasadena California between Italy and Brazil. I would highly recommend checking this song out. Nanowar of Steel is an Italian Metal Band and most of their songs are parody songs but they are awesome. They don't necessarily take themselves seriously but they have fun with their music. I would highly recommend checking out Nanowar of Steel's Pasadena 1994 song.

Concerning the HMS Hood, she was a battlecruiser. Battlecruisers combined the firepower of a battleship with the speed of a cruiser. When the Hood and Bismarck squared off, the Bismarck sunk the Hood with 5 salvos. All but three of the Hood’s crew perished
@adam_mawz_maas
@adam_mawz_maas Жыл бұрын
That's not really accurate in Hood's case, the Admiral class battlecruisers were armoured on par with the earlier Queen Elizabeth class superdreadnoughts and in fact Hood's armor was similar overall to Bismarck's, although Hood had weaker deck armor (which was not a battlecruiser feature, but one of age, the deck armor grew significantly over time as design engagement ranges increased. Hood was still designed for shorter WW1 engagements where deck armor was mostly there only to prevent shorter range small calibre hits, not the longer ones that 1930's battleships were designed for). Current scholarship indicates that Hood was most likely hit below the waterline next to a secondary magazine, as Hood had a persistent wake trough that uncovered the weak spot there. The armor of most battleships ended at the waterline and they only had torpedo bulges below. Only a handful of battleships lacked this weakness (most notably the newest US ships, but not any of the older WW1 designs) Bismarck was crippled at the same battle by a below the waterline hit forward from Prince of Wales, which is why Bismarck ran for port leaking fuel and unable to make full speed. Prince of Wales also took a below the waterline hit during the battle with minimal damage. The difference in all 3 hits was location. The reason so many happened at this one battle was the high sea state, it was unusual to actually fight a battle in high seas as occurred at Denmark Strait. Note that the Royal Navy thought the engagement occurred almost 3 miles further away than it did. Records recovered post-war from Prinz Eugen made clear that Hood was too close for a deck penetration to have been at all likely. The Admiral commanding had run in close because he knew Hood was a match for Bismarck at closer range, but weak to long distance plunging fire. Unfortunately a 'Golden BB' happened.

The sinking of the Bismarck was unquestionably the biggest naval action in the Atlantic during the second world war. The loss of the Bismarck changed Germany's entire naval strategy and thus their entire war strategy. Following the sinking of the HMS Hood, which was the pride of Britain's Royal Navy. the search for and subsequent discovery and ultimate successful attack on that ship by the British Navy is nothing short of a miracle. Sabaton's history of war put to music is nothing short of artistic brilliance.

There's actually film footage of that battle. It was shot from the other battleship that was with the Bismarck. With just the sound of the wind and the displacement of the water under the ship,it's crazy how loud the Bismark's cannon's were from several miles away. You can also hear the incoming shells from the British and see them hit the water. Once they got the cannon's lined up right, it only took them around 3 minutes to sink the Hood. The British got lucky and hit the Bismarck's rudder and disabled the ship before being sunk. I have read that the Germans scuttled the Bismarck, since it was supposed to be unsinkable. I reckon they didn't want the British to get credit for sinking it.

Hello Maggie. As you've seen, there is a lot of info about this video. The Bismark was a German Battleship of WWII and one of the largest such ships ever constructed at the time. The British claim to have sunk the Bismark, but in fact, the Germans scuttled their own ship when it became apparent that they could not fix the jammed rudder, which had been hit by a torpedo dropped from a Kingfisher biplane. It was decided to 'scuttle' the ship, rather than see Him taken and claimed by the Brits. There is a scene in the video that shows the turrets slipping free of the hull as the Bismark sank. This is correct. The Bismark 'turned turtle' (overturned) and shed his turrets before the keel weight 'righted' the ship as it sank, to strike the bottom and slide down the side of a seamount, where it finally slid to rest, upright on the ocean bottom. I say 'his' for the Bismark, because in German parlance, all ships are 'male', not female, as is the common usage with most nations. Thus, the lyric: 'He was made to rule the waves, and lead the Kriegsmarine'. The 'necklace' you spotted was a silver pocket watch which was hung from a necklace. The inside cover of which had inscribed the ship's position where He sank upon that day. That watch was, according to the survivor's report, given to him by Captain Linderman as he lay dying. The 'old man' at the beginning of the video is the survivor's son. Sabaton had wanted the survivor himself, but he declined. The various medals and other memorabilia mounted on the walls of the office are real and used with permission. The video, for the most part, takes place at the coordinates of the sinking of the Bismark as tribute to those 2,000 brave souls that went down with their ship. The views of the Bismark, and the combat scenes, are all computer generated and were the efforts of the game: World of Warships, who contributed to the video as well. Other than the 'old man', all the other person seen are actors playing their roles. And the 'old man' is 'acting' in his father's stead. It can be inferred that Captain Linderman inscribed the pocket watch with the ship's position in an attempt to record the Bismark's final resting place. If Linderman had survived, he could, at least, inform the German government of its final fate, and where it went down. As we can see, the Captain did not survive, but one of the crew did, carrying the inscribed watch and the ship's location. Which made the search for the Bismark in 'modern' times FAR easier to find and document. At the sight recorded upon the watch, the search team found the Bismark's turrets. The Bismark itself 'sailed' as he sank, and was found at the base of a seamount, with a debris trail behind it from sliding down the mount's flank to his final resting place. The ship is surprisingly 'intact'. Relatively speaking. If interested, there is a video documentary upon the Bismark and the efforts to locate and document the wreck. Which, I believe, is a World Heritage Site. There are many adages about the Sea. 'The Sea is a Harsh Mistress' is one. But this video encapsulates another. 'All who die upon the waves are brothers in death.' Even though what the German Government did during the war as deemed 'evil', those who fought for Germany were, for the vast majority, honorable and brave warriors for their Fatherland. And thus, should be honored for their deeds and sacrifices. Just like those that died fighting Germany were courageous, honorable, and brave as well. Courage, Honor, and Bravery are not the sole possessions of any government. They are aspects of the humans that fight and die in war.

Fun fact. The Bismarck was fitted with ''at the time'' Advanced Anti-Air systems which out-dated the pre-war carrier-launched Swordfish bi-planes. As a result. Noe were shot down as the swordfish was soo out-dated and too slow for the minimum settings for the anti air battery of the Bismarck.

Loved the video @Maggie Reneé! Can't wait for the next video girl! First video of yours and love the content! Hello from Prince George's county, Maryland! Sabaton's "Bismarck" is the Best way to get started to listening to their songs. They had some help from Wargaming North America (the Same company known for World of Tanks) since their newest Game, World of Warships, was coming out the same year that Sabaton made "Bismarck" (2015). They got their Start back in the Mid-1990's with them finding their Niche in the History fan base in 2005, with their videos being more along the lines of a Full-Scale Movie Production. I know that not many people are into this but I can Recommend a few videos that go more In-depth about Bismarck. • The Hunt for the Bismarck by History Channel, Season 1 or Dogfights. • @Baz Battles videos on The Battle of Denmark Straight where Bismarck Sank HMS Hood, the Pride of the Royal Navy, and the Hunt for the Bismarck which followed up the Battle of Denmark Straight for the next 3 days. • and as a Member of the History and Anime Communities, I must say beforehand that there is a Game called "Azur Lane" where you get to collect Waifu's but the catch is that they are Anthropomorphized versions of the Ships from World War Two. Local Community Content Creator @Anime Anarchy did the Pilot for his "The Ships of Azur Lane" Series on his Channel on Bismarck. It's about an hour long so I'm not sure if you're going to be looking at anything like that along with it being Anime but that's still an option. Hope you like the Ideas and I'll catch you in your next video!

In the beginning of the music video, the guy on the radio was actually reciting lyrics from a song by the same name that no doubt inspired this one. The Bismark was a German battleship that was, at the time, the biggest and most powerful battleship ever made. It sunk an allied then went down after an Allied effort to find it resulted in a big battle. Interesting fact, there is evidence that the Bismark may have been sabotaged by one of its own men during the battle.
