The Christmas Truce of 1914 is one of the most remarkable events in human history. That cross shown at the end represents one that's actually placed at one of the battlefields in Belgium, and the inscription is almost exactly the same. Sabaton took years to create this song because they wanted to make sure they could get it right. I think they did, it's an absolutely beautiful song.

Floor Jansen is married to Hannes van Dahl, Sabaton's drummer. The credit list includes "Ending credit vocals by Floor Jansen" near the end (12:52). Floor's outro is not on the official lyrics video so I assume it's not part of the song "proper". Yes, the Christmas Truce of 1914 was real, the Pope called for it on 7 December but was ignored by both sides. It then broke out spontaneously in many different places, what they describe did happen in some place (there's lots of records of football matches just as described for example) but on other parts of the front they just stopped shooting, and yet other parts the fighting continued unabated. It was completely against orders and the higher ups on both sides feared they might not go back to war afterwards so they went to great lengths to insure it couldn't be repeated the following years (artillery barrages of the zones between the sides, orders that it would be considered treason and so on).

Hi there, Almost one year after this video. I am nearly 40 and for years I have observed how the "higher ups" keep trying to turn humans against each other. Constantly saying that "it is human nature to be greedy, violent, malevolent". Lies upon lies. Any living being will exhibit violent behaviour when under duress or stress or fighting for survival. Also, this same violent behavior is just a stage in part of the development of the brain/character/being (*). This story is a testament to the true nature of human being: "being able to go past survival/territorial instincts and see each other "brotherness"" - kindness even in the most anti-kindness environment of all: right in the middle of the battlefield. As history reports, yet it is completely ignored by all mainstream education, the "higher ups" had to go to great lengths to prevent people from getting along. This was over 100 years ago and only a very small minority of the population learned the lesson while the +99% continue to fall prey to the "divide and conquer" tactics. My race is better/worse than your race. My country is better/worse than your country. My XYZ is better/worse than your XYZ. Bullocks, we are all going though the same feelings, the same kind of experiences, even if in very different scenarios. (*) Just like above, this "My XYZ is better/worse than your XYZ" is just another part of the brain/character/being development. If allowed to mature, a person will move past this and no longer have this need. The "higher ups" know this is a state of emotional childhood and they know how to lock the masses continuously into this state. Right now, more than ever their tactics are evident for those who can see. Unfortunately only those that manage to grow to "adulthood" and release their childhood-held beliefs and programmings and face reality for what it is and deal with it, are able to see this. All others remain repeating the childhood programmings and traumas, falling to addictions to avoid feeling and dealing with the pain and reality - while tragically ignoring that this is what keeps them locked - distractions. Cheers.

You have to know, that the British and the Germans had been culturally very close before the war, many Germans learned English. Kaiser Willhelm was looking for an alliance with Britain, before the war started. The British King was of German descend and a cousin of Kaiser Willhelm (so was the Zar of Russia). Most of the Christmas tunes had the same melody in English and in German, so when soldiers started singing carols in the trenches the other side could join in. It did not happen as spontaniously as it is depicted here. They had been kind of communicating via song and shouts quite some time and have established some communality before they dared to make an offer of scesefire and wandered into no mans land. Most of the Christmas Truce was between British and German soldiers, only very few frontline areas of the French took part (after all Germany attacked France). It was mostly confined to the Belgium sector where the English troops where stationed.

I think Floor singing the outro at the end of the song gave it closure. They began working on this song in 2014. It took them this long to "get it right", something they pride themselves in. They do not pick sides. They tell the story as factually accurate as they can, without bias.

The reason the truce ended was because artillery was ordered to fire on the field, from both sides, forcing the soldiers back into the trenches. Artillery and reserve troops kept the battle going. Many soldiers, aimed away if the recognized a friend from the other side, but had no choice but to fire on enemies that entered the fight to resume the war. Many soldiers ended up shooting friends they had made, out of mistake.

Great to see your first reaction to Sabaton, hopefully many more to come! They're an awesome band, and I've not seen many who can come close to the live shows they put on! All their songs are based on historical events or characters. I would highly recommend 'En Livstid I Krig - Live in Gothenburg' as your next Sabaton song - it's in their native Swedish so worth having the subtitles on to see the story through the song. Their guitarist Tommy Johansson also is an incredibly talented singer in his own right and has some great stuff on his own youtube channel which you'd definitely enjoy! He's done a lot of covers of classics, but has also rearranged some Sabaton lyrics to the tunes of Disney ones to create some fun mashups. He's also recently released a fantastic rendition of 'You Raise Me Up' but an octave higher! Keep up the great work :)

I am still close with guys I served with 40 years ago despite going years with out seeing them. Add in Floor's soaring vocals at the end and I tear up every time. War is never a good answer but unfortunately evil exists in the world and sometimes it is the necessary solution. I read a lot of military history. WW I, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars was brutal. Trench warfare was terrible. The trenches within rifle shot of each other and the no man's land strung with concertina wire in-between. Generals who didn't have a clue ordering charges "over the top" into machine gun fire and hand grenades. The use of mustard gas, tanks and aircraft were thought to make another war unthinkable. This did happen in 1914 and there were times after a battle when there would be a short truce to retrieve the wounded and the dead.

I'm not going to lie, this song 100% wrecks me every time that I hear it. Knowing the history behind it, and watching current events the way that I do... where this one hits the hardest is the sense that the division that wracked the world then and the division that is wracking the world now is... chilling. The sense that even in that time of conflict, they were able to have a moment of serenity like that is just... beyond powerful. We need to be able to have a moment of peace like that here today, too. We need more than that, but we definitely need at least that much. Now, musically, one of the things that you didn't comment on, but stands out to me every time that I hear it is in the opening stanza right before the repeated "We were all." All of the lines follow the same musical pattern, except for the last line. "Voices sang to me from... no man's land." With the rhyming and rhythmic patterns, it would scan as "voices sang to me from hell" without the pause... but instead, they do pause and say "no man's land" instead of "hell." That's just a moment within the song that just hits me like a hammer every time.

Spoiler, a lot of the guys ended up not wanting to fire at eachother after the ceasefire and end up getting rotated out and sent to even more terrible fronts to die. It was really shitty.

One reason there wasn’t a Christmas truce in 1915 was because the Canadian Expedition forces didn’t believe in half measures and tossed grenades mixed in with cans of food, as well as shooting any German that stuck their head above the trench line.

Sabaton's inevitable song about the Ghost of Kyiv is going to be banger.

@Badatallthis Stuff They hinted at it on their twitter, quote "Can't say too much yet, but we are keeping our eyes on tales of a certain "ghost" in the skies". But, surely you know better than anyone else what Sabaton would and would not write about, right?

@Badatallthis Stuff When did I say he was real? I said Sabaton might write a song about him. Stop putting words in my mouth and learn to read.
@fnglert2 жыл бұрын
@Badatallthis Stuff Their own tweet suggests they might. It's not confirmed either way. He might not be real (the footage is certainly fake but officials have claimed the figure is real, though that might be propaganda) but real or not he's certainly a symbol of resistance and a figure to rally behind. That's important as well.

Yes, the Christmas Truce of 1914 was a real event. While it did not happen exactly as depicted here, yes, German and English soldiers heard the other side singing Christmas Charols and joined in. Somebody decided to carefully approach under a white flag. Who it was at first is not decided yet. But what is certain is that both sides agreed to a cease-fire for the Christmas days. For an unforgetable few hours the cannons were quiet, and soldiers celebrated a peaceful moment in the devastation of the battlefield. The sad part was that afterwards they returned to their trenches to pick up the fighting a short time later. Some marching into the gunfire of people they had celebrated with a few hours earlier. That was the great tragedy of that moment. The chance was given to see the enemy as a person and not as a vile creature deserving to die yet few picked up on it. I believe if the common soldiers who were in the front lines would have been asked if they prefered peace over war, they'd have agreed to end this war then and there. But the common soldier is never asked. The common soldier recieved orders, and they had to fulfill them or face an execution commando for treason. That is the tragedy of our society. People who claim to know what is better for others rarely do the fighting. They are the ones giving the orders while others suffer and die for them. Rarely if ever do those giving the orders from the top suffer ANY consequences for their actions.

The main reason why this was not continued after 1914 was because the higher ups on both sides had never agreed with it to begin with. Following the temporary cease-fires along the Western Front, units who participated in the Christmas Truce were rotated out of frontline service and replaced with new units who had no issues fighting the enemy. Each side went as far as to supress the story from being released and soldiers who participated were ordered to never speak of it.

The reason this didn’t continue is during the subsequent year of 1915, the war had become even nastier, with toxic gas attacks becoming regular occurrences on both sides. Most of the men who originally participated in the truce were likely dead by the 2nd year due to the high levels of attrition and turnover, and the mid to high ranking officers on both sides disapproved of the truce due to them not wanting their soldiers becoming familiar with the enemy, which could lead to hesitation to kill and mutiny. They didn’t want their soldiers thinking for themselves. Many of the men and low ranking officers who participated in or helped facilitate the truces were shamed, rotated away, or killed for cowardice. All to ensure that the amazing moment of humanity that happened on Christmas of 1914 wouldn’t repeat itself.

The Christmas Truce did occur( and it was the ordinary Soldier not the Generals that organised it), reason why it was less , popular with the ordinary soldiers after 1914, was at least on the British side of things when The High command heard of this, they issued an order, which more or less stated if anything like this happened again, the soldiers would be charged ( court martialled)with Fraternising with the Enemy ( something similar or worse) , which if found guilty could result in a death sentence ( firing squad).

They (the soldiers) Tried to make an unofficial christmas truce during the following years after 1914, but it resulted in the soldiers faced court martial following the attempts.

This really happened minus guitar. The truce was initiated by the Germans. I read after the truce ended both sides would either didn't shoot or shot into the air. The soldiers on both sides were replaced. The trenches on both side of the war were so close they would talk and tell jokes to each other and sometimes exchange things. Both sides policy was you don't shoot a me and I will not shoot at you. All countries involved should had followed their example.

This is one of my two top favorites by Sabaton. It's both beautiful and profoundly sad at the same time. Lest We Forget it somewhat of their motto I think. There's an actual memorial in at least one place to remember the Christmas truces. As for my other favorite, it's in Swedish and called En Livstid i krig (A Lifetime of war, about the 30 year war so truly a lifetime for many involved). Check it out if you haven't already :)

If you can have a moment of peace why not simply keep it going, make everyday Christmas. Because life, and in this case the insanity which was the War, does not stop it is simply paused for a sublime moment, your point is valid in utopia. Christmas (in some cultures, it can be a different time in others) every year commonly sees families come together, good will and charity, removing the blatant consumerism it is a time where people at least try to be more tolerant, understanding and giving. So why is not everyday like Christmas, with gifts, charity and family...... because sadly life, with all its emotions both the selfish and the charitable, with all its pressures and demands eventually closes in. Work needs to be done, bitter words are spoken or remembered and the world inevitably narrows to selfish concerns. But it is moments like this which we need to remind us that even in the literal worst of times we can, if only for a moment, display the best of ourselves. If we can't make everyday like this we can at least aspire to try harder to do so, even in the smallest way.

Dont forget; like the conscripts in Russia today, these guys didn't want to fight. They were told what to do even tho they were on a trip to nowhere. This video IMHO is very worthy of someone like Spielberg, and should be recognised as so.

[Excerpt from The Nottingham Evening Post, January 2, 1915 An unofficial truce on Christmas day, as described by an English soldier, who writes:--- “I will tell you about a thing I couldn’t imagine happening, until it did. We have actually met the Germans halfway between our trenches and exchanged cigarettes, buttons, &c.! “On Christmas Eve we were shouting across to each other, ‘A merry Christmas….”]

Sabaton just seems to be the center of a lot of talent, the bassist Per is the chief songwriter, the guitarists Chis and tommy are incredible (Tommy playing the solo on this one), Hannes being married to Floor, and Joakim is a hell of a vocalist. I do have a suggestion if you start going down the Sabaton rabbit hole, though: Tommy Johansson is not only a talented guitarist, but a FANTASTIC singer! he has his own YT channel where he does originals, and also a big thing with him is the "Disney-fication" of some Sabaton songs, and his takes on popular songs from musicals, his version of "Hallelujah" is FANTASTIC...

I did catch a couple of minutes of it, but I’m not usually into musicals. I really get into more of the reactions to hard rock and metal as well as the a cappella groups by reactors not usually into those genres. Not sure if I’ll be able to make the live stream as I’ll be on the road most of the day.
