Shoshana is the perfect example of knowing your voice, knowing the character, and LIVING in that moment. Cynthia Erivo, Lara Fabian, and Yebba are the same way. All embody the song. From before the first note is sung, until well after the last.

I'm a musical theatre teacher, but was classically trained. I always teach my students about recitative vs aria, because no...there isn't really a term for this in the theatre world. We mostly describe it as "speak singing." Even in older "legit" musical theatre, a lot of songs have a "recit" section, but as far as I know, there isn't a name for it in English/modern terms. Modern theatre doesn't typically structure songs that way, but as you pointed out, the speech-like approach is used within the song. With my students, I obviously teach proper technique, but we prioritise acting through song. Vocal perfection can, and should, be sacrificed for the character and storytelling. I remind them to act, and it brings them back to speaking. Shoshana Bean is a masterclass in storytelling. Every single time. She also happens to be one of the best voices in the business...a rare combination.
@jessicasopranonotes4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the clarification! I've never had a musical theater voice teacher or pop teacher so I'm clueless on the terminology used between the genres. I absolutely love that you put acting at the forefront. It's incredible how much improvement can happen when we're not so focused on technique but just delivering a message. Very nice to meet you, and thank you for stopping by!
@carr07604 жыл бұрын
@@jessicasopranonotes Absolutely. You have to let the story lead you. Take Bernadette Peters for example...is she the best singer? No. But she is an absolute master in acting through song. There's a reason she was Sondheim's muse for years. I'd take her over a perfect singer who can't tell a story any day of the week. Technique absolutely matters, but the different between good and great is how much of yourself you are willing to put into a song. Honestly, it's the reason I made the switch from classical/opera to theatre. I just can't connect in the same way when I'm singing opera...I have to focus far too much on the technique. This was my first time watching you, and I was pleasantly surprised! I appreciate the level of detail you picked up. You clearly know your stuff. I'll be back!

This is indeed a master class in acting a song. Ive been watching it since it dropped, and I return to it a couple of times a month. Everything you pointed out is spot on, and I really appreciate your attention to detail. The skill, technique, and emotion that Sho puts into this performance is demonstrated by the fact that you, as a professional singer, were so touched by it that you stopped analyzing and evaluating and were actually moved to tears should be proof enough to anybody how great Shoshanas performance is. She has been singing professionally a very long time, and has a few albums and lots of credits to her name. If you want to hear more of her I cant recommend her take on "Let it Rain" enough. It is COMPLETELY different than this, but is also one of the greatest vocal performances Ive ever seen. Its one of my favorite things to watch is people who don't know Shoshana react to her. I was drawn back to Ms Bean....mesmerized by her voice and performance. Each day for a week, I have replayed her singing over and over again. When she belts "scared of the life that's inside her....to fight just a little ", I raised off the stool for her. Absolutely stunning. Power house performance. "Make it Rain"....she did it again

I've watched MANY different vocal coaches/performers react/critique this performance and I must say that yours was the most in-depth and cohesive one I've seen. I agree with your assessment about her going into her chest voice in the one section but I have another theory as well. When taking the entire context of the song into consideration, I feel as though she's using her lighter, breathier tones when she's talking about her current situation because it feels like it's something she can't do anything about. When she reminisces about how her life used to be and everything she used to be/used to have, her chest voice comes out because it's what she longs for again.

I think that sincere dramatic presence combined with the expressive voice is why there are such dedicated fans of David Draiman, Floor Jansen, Gordon Lightfoot, Alanis Morrisette, Jinjer, and pretty much all the Postmodern Jukebox singers. Style of song and the specific emotions are less important than contrasts & sincerity.

I feel you and I'm feeling her performance too. I really appreciate how you are analyzing and breaking down for us the acting and body language that goes so well with her vocal dynamics to truly communicate the emotion and the message of the song. Singers that connect to and are able to transmit the emotion -- how a song is supposed to make us feel -- are the ones who truly stand out. That to me is equally or even more important than having a seemingly perfect vocal technique. Just discovered you and will now have to look up more of your reactions. Thanks.

You managed to put into words everything I saw but didn't know how to explain, which is something I've not seen yet from the many reacters I follow. I'm happy to sub forever for just that, but you also manage to react and explain without removing yourself from the performance, and allowing yourself to visibly feel every syllable. It's an instant connection and I often found myself reacting the same way (without any idea why), which is another thing I've never experienced with any other pros who react. I find a lot of pros tend to disconnect from the source after hearing so many renditions. The only way I can explain it is that you sing from the heart, but you also listen from the heart.

Here, SB combines exquisite musical theatre singing and acting with storytelling to pique interest, lure us in, keep us involved, make us care, and, finally, break our hearts. In the final analysis, using music and lyrics and acting all together in the service of storytelling is what we singers-classical, musical theatre, or otherwise-should be doing as best we can.
