There’s an effort of putting this together and maybe you can judge a single note but definately not the singer in general. Mind you, old recordings tend to make a voice sound more even too.

I agree with you. The new technology is more sensitive and picks up on every little moment of losing the breath slightly; any sort of wobble is heard. The lo fi was more broad so that it records the basic idea of what’s happening. It’s like the difference between mono and stereo. But I disagree that you can’t judge a singer by one note... maybe not their entire repertoire but you can judge who sings the best b5 by listening to their b5 :) lol.

Sutherland has the best high notes. She always sounds effortless with a full beautiful sound. Birgit Nilsson is also remarkable for the sheer intensity and sound quality. And Rosa Ponselle, who is usually not very secure in the high register here is absolutely perfect

Head voice. Perhaps there are exceptions that prove the rule, but belting isn't a thing in opera.

@@mumei178 Sometimes female voices of opera can belt but that's very very seldom (I know Callas almost belted some notes playing Abigaille in Nabucco. Many roles that ask for some anger moments will allow you to hear belty sounds, for example Maria Stuarda during the confrontation scene, but I'm not sure you can consider this as belting).

These are pure head voice ! Belting is no very a thing in opera ! The goal is to sing in head voice while continue to engage the chest voice all the way up ! That’s what give them the power !

Nilsson, Callas, Moffo, Sutherland, Caballé, Zeani, Serra...e non in ordine di importanza ma come segnalazione, inoltre alcune di loro hanno anche la chiusa in pianissimo, che è dimostrazione di grande tecnica ... la peggiore è Netrebko, sfiatata, acuto lanciato e corto, non accompagnato e respirazione precaria...

Really, I wonder how anybody can find a specific and exact ranking of 50 singers. I could find one of maybe 10 or 15. But 50? Ridiculous. And I could find maybe 10 or 15 favourites of the 50 shown here. But some are so unique and distinct that they are incomparable yet equally thrilling.
