In 1987 the Combat Pictorial Detachment documented the U.S. Army III Corps ship tons of vehicles and equipment from Texas to Europe in its last major field exercise in preparation against a Russian Soviet invasion.

I was in REFORGER 86. Deployed out of Bamberg West Germany at the time with the 3rd Bulldog Brigade, 1st Armor Division. I was fresh out of Combat Medic school and it was during REFORGER 86 that I earned the DOC nickname from SFC Clark, 1st Platoon Tank Commander for Alpha 3-35 Armor.

I remember that year in Northern Germany when a German farmer was really pissed off because British infantry had dug in his front and back yard to include a British Challenger tank had fucked up his driveway. When we came by his farm he told us that he was pissed at the British. He said at least the American soldiers were always considerate of the German people.Well if the Soviets at that time were to invade i guess he would not care if British or American soldiers were trying to defend his home.

Germany would probably have been a nuclear wasteland if the Soviets had invaded. I believe Soviet war plans included the use of nuclear weapons from day one.

The 1-279 INF, 45th Inf. Bde was there in Sept. 1987 at the Port of Rotterdam picking up our vehicles for REFORGER '87. Great to see this footage after all these years.

And the sadest: They all would finally die. Grinded up between two beasts that are full of hate willing to win under ALL circumstanceses and not caring about a single shitty soldier life.

1987 was NOT the last major NATO exercise to deter the Soviets. That would have been REFORGER '88 (Certain Challenge). It was the largest REFORGER ever held.

I was in REFORGER "84" with the 3ID in the Crailsheim area of W. Germany (at the time). Those were some fun times. I'm glad that Cold War I is over and Germany finally got back together and massive militaries are no longer needed there in that great country. I hope Europe remains at Peace forever, and the rest of the world too. It was worth spending 2 years of my life for the protection of all of the Free World.....! I would do it again if necessary.

I was in reforger ‘85. 5th ID 1/61 inf. Flew in C-141 to Europe. Saw France, Belgium and Germany. Got a couple of free days in Antwerp to await vehicles and sleep. The port is huge. Was a fun time. Was in Munich for Oktoberfest. Got to talk to many German kids who spoke English. Great kids. First time I saw Abram’s and Bradley’s. The girls in Belgium were very beautiful. What a great time.
