The deer slid across the hood of my car before doing a backflip into the windshield of the car next to me, the horns also punctured the side panel. The deer than got up and ran away. The only damage to my car was a trail of fur across the hood of my car, the car next to mine wasn’t so lucky!

My dad was a supervisor at Eglin in the mid 60s when the 1st SOW was experimenting with Skyhook, I believe on C-123s. When they did experiments like this, airmen could volunteer for an experiment and be given a day off as a reward. Well, my dad had this one troop who wasnt all that useful when he was there and he would volunteer for every test program they had. Which worked out OK cause he wasnt missed all that much. Well, Skyhook came along and this guy signed up to test it (tbh it sounds kinda fun, I might have done that too). They suited him up, sat him on the test range, flew in, snagged the cable and... the winch broke. For about 2 hours this guy was flopping around at 5,000' over western Florida being centrifuged vertically behind a C-123 while a couple of technicians pounded on the winch. They finally got him winched in and he got his day off - after a week in the hospital shifting his internal organs back into their original location. Apparently while in the hospital he was also cured of the "volunteer" thing...

There was a similar project tried, if you trail a long rope behind you and fly in circles the rope will trace a spiral in the air, use a long enough rope and the center of the spiral will be effectively stationary, grab the end and winch up the package.

I flew the MC130 IRL. The way it worked was the whiskers opened on the nose. The pilot caught the line and the whiskers closed and a catch held the rope. The victim went straight up and then trailed behind the acft. The loadmasters had a winch with a weighted hook shaped like a little bomb. They hooked the line and winched the line up to a capstan and hauled the victim in. The navigator opened the forward escape hatch and hooked the line to the balloon and cut it. The system was retired in '96. All the MC 130Es and MC 130Ps that were capable of Skyhook have been retired to the bone yard.

With the skyhook, you should have the grappler in the rear. Have the hook attached to a small parachute (like the parachute for the little green army men or a little smaller). Use that as a bobber for fishing, then when you fly by the hook line it will grab the cord and real in the baby or anything else you would like to wench in. For the winch itself instead of foam use something like spool from sowing thread or fishing line it shouldn't flex in the middle. I hope this helps. Love the concept.

Did you factor in static vs dynamic lines dynamic just basically means stretches like a bungiecord and cord length also flying the grapple hanging from plane to the line held up by balloons at an angle becoming an advantage as it stretches line out horizontally for an easy hook ya just gotta fly with the wind blowing at your wingtip for a bit

such a fantastic video. Josh is a consummate pilot, he warns Anders if the FPV goes out he'll have to ditch the Gremlin to save Cabby, which is a decision you have to make before you're off the ground or you'll never get around to making it. I did a glider tow and forgot to inform the glider pilot that if he was having trouble dragging me down, to unhook and land off runway. his glider had some issue and pitched a lot and he never disconnected when he should have and it crashed both little foamies. just saying!
