George Leite i actually had a hit and run with a deer when my car was parked and empty! 😬 the deer rad across four lanes of traffic barely missing two moving cars running into the parking lot. The deer slid across the hood of my car before doing a backflip into the windshield of the car next to me, the horns also punctured the side panel. The deer than got up and ran away. The only damage to my car was a trail of fur across the hood of my car, the car next to mine wasn’t so lucky!

I flew the MC130 IRL. The way it worked was the whiskers opened on the nose. The pilot caught the line and the whiskers closed and a catch held the rope. The victim went straight up and then trailed behind the acft. The loadmasters had a winch with a weighted hook shaped like a little bomb. They hooked the line and winched the line up to a capstan and hauled the victim in. The navigator opened the forward escape hatch and hooked the line to the balloon and cut it. The system was retired in '96. All the MC 130Es and MC 130Ps that were capable of Skyhook have been retired to the bone yard.

One of the other less talked about missions of the Fairchild C-119 was a mission involving exposed spy satellite film reentering the atmosphere. The film would re-enter in a capsule that would fall into the ocean on a parachute. If the mission is successful the C-119 will capture the falling capsule by hooking the chute. So there is your next FliteTest mission.

In the mid-'60s I worked in the survival shop in the Air Force and while on Guam because of Viet Nam they were considering bringing back skyhook and came to my shop asking if I would "volunteer" to be picked up from a one-man life raft. My problem is I'm scared of heights and the thought of dangling under a C-130 made me sick to my stomach but not really not giving a choice I agreed. After a couple of sleepless nights, thankfully the test was canceled and skyhook was dead.

such a fantastic video. Josh is a consummate pilot, he warns Anders if the FPV goes out he'll have to ditch the Gremlin to save Cabby, which is a decision you have to make before you're off the ground or you'll never get around to making it. I did a glider tow and forgot to inform the glider pilot that if he was having trouble dragging me down, to unhook and land off runway. his glider had some issue and pitched a lot and he never disconnected when he should have and it crashed both little foamies. just saying!

Very cool, here is a suggestion. In WW 2 C-47 were used to retrieve US "Waco" gliders so as to be able to retrieve gliders from areas not able support C-47 ground launch. Also, during the early years of film based spy satellites "Corona" C-119 were used to mid-air capture film canisters under parachute. Similar system was used to mid-air capture returning materials canisters from asteroids from returning spacecraft (NASA Genesis project, 20054) returning to earth. Could FT try repeat this idea?
@wildblue2u4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Czeczot For the glider a simple loop stretched between to upright poles, similar to how banner tow planes use, and a tail hook to catch it. The mid-air capture uses a similar setup as the FT crew used. Several videos on KZbin show how full scale system worked.
