LYRICS
Eternal rains will come
We should say goodbye
And suffer on our own
As all our thoughts were wrong
So hard to keep the darkness from seeping through
And when the flood comes to drown us there is nothing we can do
You told me not to wait
Unless I could wait forever
Because there is no time for us
Take comfort in what was
So hard to keep the darkness from seeping through
And when the flood comes to drown us there is nothing we can do
Here it comes, our death comes
And in my sleep I can’t forget
Reaching for the surface, I see you

Ventryx If you wanna get really, and I mean REALLY, pedantic, Mikael wasn't a member of the original, ORIGINAL lineup of Opeth, as David Isberg of the first lineup of the band invitied him to join the first Opeth lineup, then everyone left/was fired, and thus the 2nd lineup of David Isberg, Mikael Akerfeldt, Anders Nordin, Nick Döring and Andreas Dimeo was born. Mikael has said that metalheads just want their happy meals handed to them and some of these comments pretty much prove that, people moaning that they haven't "evolved" need to shut the fuck up. The band doesn't HAVE to do anything it doesn't want to and how about instead of using the word evolve how about we just use the word different at least that way the purists won't have a way to justify their shitty close minded views with "they didn't evolve they went backwards", and that's mainly the biggest problem with metal fans in thinking they know what's best for a band despite having no experience what so ever in the music industry. After being around for so long it's completely understandable that Mike doesn't want to do full on death metal anymore and I'm glad they changed their sound because it's broadened my music taste a lot. It's a shame fans can be such assholes even when the music sounds as good as this.
@RedgraveGilver
@RedgraveGilver 9 жыл бұрын
JoRdOguitarman1 From what i have mostly seen, most metalheads are whiny ass hats and keeps bitching every time a metal band releases a new record whether it's a whole different sound or the same sound, and no one is gonna convince me otherwise of what I think of this so called fanbase because this is what I have mostly seen especially in the Internet. If it's a different sound the band is a sell out and if it's the same sound, it's repetitive and stale. I love it how some believe that they are making metal better by whining and whining yet in truth most if not all metal bands really couldn't give a shit of what they think and will just make the music that they "like" whether it's good or bad. I have always thought that there is more brotherhood or sisterhood in metal because its the genre that the masses love to ridicule or make fun of but nope it's a complete 180. In fighting over Sub-genres and people calling names just because someone love a different metal genre or a different band.
@Jordo246
@Jordo246 9 жыл бұрын
RedgraveGilver To be fair it is mostly on the internet where the arguing happens, me and all my metalhead friends get on and pretty much never argue about bands despite some of them disliking or even hating bands that I love. But I'll be damned if it isn't every single fucking video to do with metal bands, go to anything to with Megadeth and there'll be an argument somewhere about Metallica, any band like Mastodon or Opeth and it's always the same they sold out shit that I'm sick to death of hearing. I love metal music but the fans can fuck themselves.
@LurchyScott
@LurchyScott 9 жыл бұрын
+JoRdOguitarman1 Great comment but you have to admit there are certain bands who claim to be writing what they want to but in all reality are only writing it to try and make more money aka In Flames aka All That Remains aka Trivium. I will defend Opeth because though their last two albums have toned down and they've become more progressive rock, they have not regressed in any way shape or form and this is still 100% Opeth that the majority of music listeners would not enjoy at all. Everything that makes Opeth Opeth is still present and to me that is all that matters. People act like Opeth has never done this before. Apparently no one remembers Damnation. Another thing is look at Mastodon's last record and how much more toned down it was compared to their previous works. Everyone praised that album but Opeth? Nope not allowed. Double standard at it's finest.
@Jordo246
@Jordo246 9 жыл бұрын
Lurch Murphy The thing with the they're only doing it to make money argument is that I'd argue that their last 2 releases have been even less accessible than their previous ones, as a metal fan I found it much easier into BWP, still life, Deliverance, ghost reveries etc because of the metal elements where as it took me a bit of time to get into this and Heritage. People don't seem to realise that just because you take out the double bass kick drums and over drived guitars doesn't instantly make it mainstream. And with Mastodon I've seen plenty of comments saying how they're not the "real" Mastodon anymore which I don't get because Once More Round the Sun is still heavy as balls.
@LurchyScott
@LurchyScott 9 жыл бұрын
JoRdOguitarman1 I have heard that too with Mastodon's newest one but I haven't heard it as much compared to Opeth though. I love Pale Communion and Heritage and Damnation. SO much banter on Opeth's newer stuff of how this is so much better than that. The "only my opinion is right and no one is allowed to feel different" arguments. Last time I checked musical preference was an individual thing. Their talent and efforts really shine with this song even if it is different than their earlier stuff which I love too.

i began listening to these guys with bwp and damnation. i have no problem with this evolution of these guys' ethereal, bluesy elements. their metal days are done i think because mikael has begun exploring emotions more complex than can be conveyed with that kind of raw energy i think.

I was a troubled teen, going through changes in my life around 2006. I listened to mostly early Mudvayne, Slipknot, and Korn. Those bands were great but then I found Opeth by accident while listening to a music channel and I was taken aback far more than what those bands did for me. First time hearing Opeth on the music channel I forgot what the name was and went quite a long time before hearing a song again. But, when I finally did, I made it a point to lock the name down into my memory and dig further into the music. You earned my loyalty with the song, "By the pain I see in others". The song spoke to me, it gave me a feeling of darkness I enjoyed only with your music at the time. It was the first song I heard from you guys and something about it woke quite a bit of darkness in my spirit back then. The silent transition in that song where it becomes very creepy sounding and you sing about outside in the park, was my favorite part. I've been a fan ever since, and still am today.

I absolutely love how this band has progessed over the years. I came into Opeth when Morningrise came out. I've loved how this band has changed musically over time as I have. The same with bands like Enslaved, Devin Townsend and Ihshan's solo stuff as well. I still absolutely love all of their older material. But it's almost like discovering a new band each time an album comes out.

To the haters: Opeth is a band, not a brand. I much prefer Mikael Akerfeldt writes what feels right to him than for him to placate stagnant fans and dial-in albums based on previous successes. I didn't completely appreciate Pale Communion right away, but I paid attention to it and it quickly became one of my favorite Opeth albums so far (and indeed, it has found its way into my personal top 10 albums list). Akerfeldt replaced anger with complexity, which is a fantastic depiction of personal growth and maturation. It really is a great album and I applaud Opeth for their artistic expression over brand capitalization. In short - if you don't like it, that's your issue, not the band's. If you want something different, make it yourself. It's 2014. We have the technology.

One of the things I find essential in good music is the honesty, the genuineness and sincerity musicians put into their creations. Please ask yourselves this: "This band I love loves metal no more, they're into prog/art rock. Would I want them to create new music in a genre they don't like anymore?". Of course not. A fan must be a thinking person, and then a fan.

This is the first time I have gotten a chance to really listen to Opeth's new album. Wow is all I have to say. It's absolutely beautiful. They truly have changed a lot but for the worse? Not at all. I salute the band for exploring new territories. Nonetheless, the progression they've made, from a borderline black (in some albums/songs) metal/death metal band to this intricate prog metal is absolutely amazing. Great stuff fellas. Gotta love the Scandinavian music scene, eh?

If you buy a few cd's from Opeth, you're not buying their will and/or forcing them to do what you want in the future. As far as I'm concerned, every single album is so different that it could have been from another artist. Every album is a new book, a new series of portraits and stories, with new themes and sounds. And I also love this one

The only way I found this awesome (in the full sense of the word) band is by googling "current progressive and alternative music". I love, love, love this stuff and to hear a newish band doing it is great. It pisses me off that the once called "progressive rock" or "album oriented" radio stations had to be given the kiss of death by suddenly being "Classic Rock". That has been a pet peeve of mine since the 90's. Who made the decision that people turn a certain age (like 30) and just want to keep hearing the same old stuff. Sure the station can always intermix in a playlist of have a weekly time for the older classics. I don't have a teenager around anymore to clue me in. My grandson seems to get into pretty good stuff and my son digs a lot of the new reggae. My son would love this if he heard it. I remember when he discovered ELP on his own and was telling me how excellent they were.

I mean, they've been recording for 20 years now, so I'm not sure I consider them "new" anymore :) FYI, this is a band that started as a straightforward death metal band in the 90's and slowly took in different influences through the years. They've been through essentially three different periods: melodic death metal, progressive death metal, progressive/fusion (currently).

This really suits opeth's genre. I like how the band has progressed. I don't want to pretend myself being the best music listener. But I will share my experience though; I used to like harsh metal(listened lots of aggression) back in the teenage days. Now I think that i need more soothing music that calms me and makes me more focused. I think the needs has changed a lot. Now I listen lots of post rock, instrumental, and progressive (esp. rock) & sometimes ambient BM fusions. As far as the band Opeth goes, akerfeldt stated he had to leave the band BloodBath so as to make him more focused on what he has been planning for opeth. I don't want any comparisons between the genres as everybody has their own taste. But with the bands progression in progressive rock, I am pretty impressed.
