Lyrics
Blank face in the windowpane
Made clear in seconds of light
Disappears and returns again
Counting hours, searchingthe night
Might be waiting for someone
Might be there for us to see
Might be in need of talking
Might be staring directly at me
Inside plays a lullaby
Slurred voice over children cries
On the inside
Haunting loneliness in the eye
Skin covering a secret scar
His hand is waving a goodbye
There's no response or action returned
There is deep prejudice in me
Outshines all reason inside
Given dreams all ridden with pain
And projected unto the last

When I first heard Damnation was a soft album I was like "lol that's kinda lame". When I actually heard the album for the first time I realized that it wasn't a soft album technically. Like, it's soft sound wise, but the overall feel of it is just oppressively, but it's lyrically their heaviest. Like, it's the musical equivalent of a dying old man reflecting on his failures. This album alone made me love Opeth more than I already did.

I bought this album 15 years ago, alongside Blackwater Park on a suggestion from a friend as I was getting into metal. I could not have been any more fortunate at the time than to find this band. I cried and laughed to this album for no particular reason, the sound took the drivers seat, and I was just strung along with the absolute beauty of the compositions. Thanks, Opeth.

this song kidnaps my soul away from my body and into an infinite space where nothing but emotion exist. No logic, No thinking, Just feeling. First time i listened to this song was 2010, never had a device since then where it wasn't downloaded. This isn't a song, It's a drug. Everything is so perfectly crafted, The instruments clash with each other with so much unison and coordination, and the voice of Mikael Åkerfeldt is so soothing and powerful at the same time, i can feel the words he is saying, and they're only heightened by the angelic melancholy of this beautiful symphony. It is a shame. This song, it's quality. It feels like serious injustice that only a few millions have heard this song, It should be held at the same regard that genius musicians are. I will never stop listening to this song, it has captured my heart, and i feel it will only release it after another masterpiece like this comes out. So far, none have made my ears tear up like this song has. Thank You Opeth, This song may not be popular, but know that the people that listen to it, have nothing less than love and appreciation for this masterpiece.

That part only clarifies this is the very Opeth that made Still Life or Blackwater Park you know IMHO - From a shitless slave region of humanism being suffered under hoon-tribe-originated-parasitism and kiki'she' collectivism which is known as the name 'Korea', whose dwellers always steals and begs from Japan's original history which clearly inherited sincere humanity in Ancient Cudara more than its 'original' dwellers in hometown.

I remember reading an interview with Mikael where he mentioned the lyrical inspiration for this song. He was out partying with some friends one night, and on the way home at like 3 AM he happened to see an old man looking out from a window. Nothing else happened, but he started to imagine what that man's life might be like and wrote these lyrics. It's basically about loneliness and the many (often older) people society forgets about.

Opeth. Blank face in the windowpane Made clear in seconds of light Disappears and returns again Counting hours, searching the night Might be waiting for someone Might be there for us to see Might be in need of talking Might be staring directly at me Inside plays a lullaby Slurred voice over children cries On The inside Haunting loneliness in the eye Skin covering a secret scar His hand is waving a goodbye There's no response or action returned There is deep prejudice in me Outshines all reason inside Given dreams all ridden with pain And projected unto the last

Before Opeth I could not listen growling metal one bit. This kind of using of perfect harmonies with mixture of different kinds of emotions in music really caught me. And yes this album and this song was crucial for me to getting used to the band's style and then moving on to Blackwater park and Ghost reveries which became even a bigger favorite for me than this album. What a band, none other is good at this level of progressive metal which is not just bout rhytm but really getting the amount of depth to a one song.

@@thewildhealer541 I agree with you both! I have talked about my ideas about this quite a bit and I think that the reason that they are so similiar is that both Tool and Opeth are incredibly versatile in their arrangements, but they both have 100% nailed their heavy sound and the transitions from that into the lighter parts, and back. They sound like two branches in opposite directions, but formed the same pattern. So 2 completely different versions of the same amazing musical accomplishment. That's the best way I can describe it. :)
@thewildhealer541
@thewildhealer541 3 жыл бұрын
@@h4xo7 Yeah, that I can agree with. They are both masters at arrangements, going from heavy to light parts. But sound wise, completely different. I had a hard time getting into Tool, except for a few songs like Vicarious, The Pot etc.. the easy listening stuff. Now I believe Lateralus to be one of the best albums of all time when I became more patient (No pun intend) with listening to them. But I was always a fan of Opeth since I was a kid honestly. I don't hear any Opeth in Tool, and vice versa. Except for arrangements as you say. They never remind me of each other when I listen to them.
