Opeth Guitar Lesson - Benighted (part one)

Welcome to my first guitar tutorial. This is a breakdown of the first half of one of my favourite Opeth songs, Benighted. I play through each section slowly and give some hints along the way. Start off slowly and learn the movements cleanly but keep a sense of the timing. Build up speed gradually and eventually play along with the original. Have fun.

I just have to comment on how EXCELLENT this video is as a tutorial. You have some very effective ideas in this video for guitar tutorials, such as the semi-transparent tabs on the bottom. The fade in's between sections of the song as to emphasize their separation is also really effective. Plus, you seem great at regular teaching. Your hard work is very apparent in the video. Nice work.

Hey man. Thanks a lot, I really liked this tutorial and finally could play this song. But you missed some bridges and parts in the verses where the notes go down and down with the voice. And how to connect to the solo part and the end of the song. But after all, it's a really good tutorial. Thank you so much.

This is a great tutorial but just a little bit of constructive feedback - you omit bits of the song which is really confusing. E.g there is an obvious slide up to the G (00:55) on the 6th string on the second section but you have it as 3 on the 6th then 1/2/3rd string open together, but its a little arpegio. Then you totaly omit a section (01:31) in the verse after the singing starts - the open A - B - D - E. Not complaining or criticising, just wondering why you left these bits out - because you can obviously play, and all the other bits are great.

Great Instruction! but your missing 1 part. He does a turn around every 4th bar during the verse, walking up A, B, C, D. In your full performance of this song you play it, so you must have just forgotten about it in this vid.

Not at all! It's some great inspiration I would've needed about two years ago. I wasn't practising ambitiously, because I hadn't exactly found a reason to, due to my lack of knowledge about my own taste in music. I'm getting there now and I've finally found things I can practice to catch up on the lost time.

In 4:46 I think you can play the 4th fret G string twice instead of playing open B string... sounds better in ur way though :)

I hate that tabs online are incorrect so often, and usually I sort it out by ear, but fingerpicking is not my main speciality so this tutorial helped me so much. Still in process of learning it, but thank you for putting in the time and effort to make this video. Rock on!🤘

I make plenty of tab mistakes in this don’t get me wrong but I like the way it sounds when I play it so that’s how it comes out in tabs. @oivindschoyen1 Hey there, I think this song would be an amazing start to anyone's guitar playing experience. I mean yes it is difficult, but there are parts of it that are ok for beginners (the intro is a great fingerpicking exercise). Of course if you have experience then it would be easier for you to learn but if you are desperate to learn this song as a beginner then my advice would be to go for it and see how far you get.

@oivindschoyen1 Some suggestions of easier songs (by Opeth) would be the acoustic part of 'For Absent Friends" and "Ending Credits" but for the most part Opeth's stuff is generally hard to play (well). Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching my videos and for responding. Eezer

There's a part missing at the vocal section dissected at 5:13. The riff is repeated and there's a "tail" at the end the 4th time, exactly when he says "from our weak and crumbling lives"/"In what's vanished from your eyes". That being said, your tutorial is way more accurate than my tabs! thanks a lot!
