This is one of their older songs, from the second album Morningrise, which has some black metal inspirations. Harsher, but with some melodic riffs. It's not as refined as the music they put out later, but it was an amazing foreshadowing for what was to come.

@@Zwodrey Then I think you're in for a treat. Them and Ne Obliviscaris are the only bands the last couple of years that I feel gets sort of close to the quality of Opeth. I know your list is long, but I'd push them ahead in the queue if I were you. Then again I am extremely biased :)

This is early Opeth and the song is from their second album. Like someone said in another comment it has some black metal feel in it. I agree that their song writing, well Mikael's writing since he pretty much writes all the songs has developed over the years, but I have learned to like their early albums more and more too over the years.

@@ManWithoutThePants Yeah, that might explain it/be the reason. Have to start listening the albums to find out / see if i also start liking them listening in the right context of the whole album. On the other hand.. i really don't know about different subgenres (i just like what i happen to like), so i googled about black metal and found out (besides the horrifying stories and some subsubgenres, like National socialist black metal 😬 ) that I don't seem to listen any black. Doom yeah, death, yeah, trash, when really pissed off, but most black, no. So it seems i don't like it as a broad genre. Ajattara, though, which was mentioned as one of those, was quite ok, when i listened to it, when trying to gather a playlist of finnish metal. Mmmm. Maybe i'll have to educate myself of the genre, trying to listen more of the example bands. Any suggestions i might like? (You not knowing what i do like that's a bit of a crazy question, but I ask still 😁 )

@@ManWithoutThePants Ps. I tend to like more the deep growling than high screaming (which was mentioned as a thing differentiating black from the genres i like [doom etc].) So it might end up as a no from me, after all. But worth trying & finding out, still

@@sateentuoksu I can't give you any good examples since I'm not really a fan of black metal either :). Early Opeth isn't exactly black metal, but in my opinion the tone is more towards black metal than later albums.
