LYRICS
Liquid is in your throat for hopeless delight
After all you fell in love with death
Life has aborted all you've had and all you became
The night is calling, you pray forth
A barren waste is your land
Crops, they were sown to die
This skin is a mirror
The eyes hover with ignorance
Hell throb from your lips
Sucked in and safe from the world of sleep
All years caring for a liar
The barren drift road is winding higher
You're a moth too close to the fire
You are stuck in a beautiful future
Changing and waiting
And seeking the truth of it all
Fleeting in sorrow, pushing your spirit away
Seeking the weakness of dislike
Whispered from the heart to be
We're all in the mourning to despair
Felling the [Incomprehensible]
Cries out, "The restless will also die"
Resurrection covered with death
Drawing the life under one
A fact tied to the earth
The soul's a victim, a follower
Oh, mother
[Incomprehensible]
For us to see
The blink of an eye
And the pride of a mother
Drawn close in a mother's son
And the love from a father
Was used by a father's son
And the pride of a mother
Drawn close in a mother's son
And the love from a father
Was used by a father's son
Over warrior's token
Mis-spoken lives on
The language unimportant
So fair and so just
All the land is taken

The end of this song is extremely creepy to me. When I was a child, I was often sick and would have fever hallucinations, and this is exactly what they sounded like: eerie, nondescript background music; random, non-intelligible voices whispering; and sinister laughter. Hope I never have to hear those sounds again - except for in Opeth songs, of course ;)

Making progressive death metal is way easier in terms of "this has never been done before". I'd say Opeth pioneered the sound, whereas in prog rock is way easier to sound like other bands. I love Opeth's new records, specially Sorceress, but I agree that it will take them some time to trascend their musical influences and make a truly unique album.

This album ages so incredibly well. Over the years I never liked this song, now I suddenly enjoy it more and more. I mean 3:02 ... wow! Watershed was one of the best albums I ever bought! Even the casing and booklet were amazing!!!

The moshpit for this song when i saw them live in 2008 started as two pits going in opposite directions and merged into one giant one that took up the entire venue which was not a small venue btw. Only better pit was cannibal corpse at mayhem fest which turned into an actual dust tornado

2020.... I look back on this album now and it amazes me how much more detailed, deeply intricate and dynamic it is compared to their newer material... Not to say that Watershed wasnt a controversial album either. I remember people disliking the direction that Opeth were going and not liking them _'going soft'_ so the feel of this album was more kind of a hybrid balance of death metal and the softer side of Opeth but at the time this album came out, The band themselves were starting to change and evolve while the death/black metal side of them seeming more like unwanted baggage they didnt want to drag around anymore. I definitely miss this side of opeth where the song writing was very very deep and everything was written out like an orchestral arrangement where there was a part to play for every instrument involved. An album that i did enjoy when it came out. But very underrated when looking back.

You just described new Opeth in second paragraph. It’s not that easy to find a song as complex as Moon Above, Sun Below or Strange Brew in older Opeth’s stuff. Pre-Watershed albums aren’t deeper and better than post-Watershed albums, it’s just different music, yet it’s still Opeth, unique and recognisable.

This song is just phenomenal from start to finish. What a band. I like their new stuff too 🤷. Don't care. Many I've seen complain bc of no growling & such....but his voice is too damn good to not like. He can do whatever he wants
