Thank you Ralfi and Drewski! I recently fell in love with the Russian aircraft and I fly the SU-33 off the Kuznetsov in any server that allows it. I do fly a lot of full fidelity modules but the professional flight model means, you're-flying-the-aircraft, which for me is at least half the point of DCS! If they've abstracted some of the combat functions it really doesn't matter, you still have to fly and fight well.

Sadly most of the flanker variants remain in service, so I'm not sure how likely we are to see them, but I would love to have a somewhat more modern flanker in DCS EDIT: fixes to the existing ones wouldn't hurt either

The big problem with Russian planes is that ED are a Russian company. By Russian law, information that ED publishes about MiGs or Sukhois is considered exporting Russian technology. Even if they don't use any data that can only be found there for some reason. Probably dates back to the Soviets' idea that the West wanted to steal their great and superior communist technologies. So technical papers on how to build Trabants were well safeguarded against the possibility that Porsche engineers might use this data to learn how to make better cars. If an American company or anyone outside of Russia comes up with the same module of a Russian aircraft, because they're not Russian, they aren't considered to have taken data across the border (assuming some jerkov doesn't get busted moving documents across the border or something). So just by being physically in Russia, ED are considered to have privileged information, even if they use the same freely available data that a RAZBAM or Heatblur could get away with using. And it's not even so much about releasing military capabilities, it really takes the angle of protecting Sukhoi and Mikoyan from foreign reverse-engineering. It's all very silly.

There's something smooth with the SU-27/33 J-11. Sur they ain't with fully clickable cockpit, but they are special in the way they fly despite there enormous size -seriously, compare them against the others, theses aircrafts are gigantic- The SU-27 was my first one, and one I still hold dear.... The first Cobra you pull with it is also nice... Especially when it involve you actually managing to do it... Having your opponent flying right under you, and you get him right after that with a fox 2.

The biggest thing I've noticed about it is the excellent datalink. Which is to say, while pathetic American datalink rely on line of sight, stronk Soviet datalink can pass data through the top half of mountains (but not thick bottom half). This really makes it easy to squat down into some rabbit hole and pop up at just the right place and time. Obviously the EOS and ETs help tremendously.

Is it just me or do people not fly the Mirage 2000 any more? I'm not super tuned in to DCS 24/7 but I've noticed I haven't seen one in-game or in the stuff I watch in a long time.

A few people fly it, but it's a bit of an expert's jet. Unless your opponent is an absolute potato, it's essentially impossible to conduct traditional energy-based BVR. In playing the stealth game, it lacks the datalink, EOS, and ETs of the Flankers. On paper it's just suicide in an open server. However, in the right hands, with someone who is good with masking and notching, the Mirage is the Devil's own snake in the grass. My favorite thing to do in the Mirage is sit on the attack vector from the enemy base, and notch their AWACS (which IS a thing). Eventually you get some Viper or Hornet blasting out to the middle of the battlefield, up in the contrails and concentrating on the other Viper or Hornet 70nmi on his datalink. Just hook him from beneath with a 4mi Super-530, and go back to marching back and forth in the notch waiting for the next one. It's best when you do that over open ocean or the flat steppe. "Where on EARTH did YOU come from?!"

J-11 have modified avionic and steath coating,effectivelly turn it into a gen 4+ instead on gen 3 like Su-27

Learn the landing parameters, and use the landing HUD (ILS equivalent, forget the name of the system the red side uses). Or if you're in a hurry, just look at the AoA gauge (the left half of the gauge furthest to the left, on the top row). Trim your plane to hold about 10-13 AoA on the gauge with flaps fully extended, then adjust your speed/thrust so that your vertical velocity on the HUD is about 3-5, downwards. That'll have you coming down smoothly. Don't pull the stick back or forward to adjust things, instead work the throttle. If your vertical speed increases too much (you're dropping too fast) increase thrust. If you're not descending at all, reduce thrust. Right before you touch down reduce throttle to 0. Done right, you won't even have to flare.

@@lordstephen7813 Also should you be so inclined, you can check the unlisted video I uploaded for a friend (youtube com / watch?v=uNnlXIkDaR4), demonstrating some light navigation and landing in the Su-25T. Much less maneuverable and a slower plane than the Su-27, but the basics of using the landing HUD mode and the AoA gauge are the same. Not trying to promote anything, don't actually have any meaningful content up there, just happened to have this one relevant video. =) EDIT: Note that I am using an English version of the cockpit via a mod, and the HUD is turned to English via the "avionics language" setting.

Ahem... on a more serious note, how would you guys compare the J-11 to the Su-33... and for that matter, the 27 to the 33? Any capabilities present or missing on one of them that the other(s) haven't got? RADAR functionality? Also, any changes as for what you should and shouldn't do with these big girls when dogfighting the common Mirage, F-16, F-18? I'm not bothering to ask about the F-14 models, we all know that they either BLAM you from a fast and high position with their Saturn V's... or end up in a high speed 1 circle fight that gradually turns into a low speed two circle.

ET/IRST in flankers nerfed what makes the plane useles now. IF enemies afterburner is off you can pick up object from ~10km when the missile ET has 25km range, so the plane sensor is worse and in many cases you will not use whole potential of ET, ET that is last and one hope for redfor low fidelity plane pilots. And now try to come closer to Fx planes on 10 km, AIMxx will eat you 10 times :( . But now finaly we have pay to win balance, you pay 10$ for su27 you get shity plane, pay 80$ and you can be king of the airspace. Many low skilled players cried too much that they bought platform for teens of $ and got raped by Su27 for 10 $. It is starting to be pay to win game.
