Clearly inspired by the famed early recordings of Nellie Melba, especially in some of those now unusual (and, to some, weird) histrionic effects of the coloratura. A really well sung and well acted performance, it's hard to make it both things simultaneously! I especially enjoyed the little subtle nuances of the phrasing that make all the difference in this scene so full of delicate but meaningful phrases, with well developed middle and lower notes, not just high lying fireworks.

The most sensual soprano voice I've ever heard in my life. And thanks for the exeptional performance. The cutting of the wrists send shivers down my spine. I'm eager for more! BTW: A Dutch cup of coffee brought me here ☕

Blair Parkinson Thank you so much! It was a thrilling experiment! And I must say it’s hard to go back to non-rubato, no portamenti and no crazy chest voice! :-) I’m very happy to hear that there are other enthousiasts out there. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@luciechartin894 why is the second stanza omitted from this performance? Was it written after the 1868 world premiere? Also, do the spoken words towards the end of the mad scene belong to the original score or were interpolated for this production?
@luciechartin894
@luciechartin894 4 жыл бұрын
Edward Amos Brandwein true, we omitted the second stanza to keep the whole piece under 2 hours. (More cuts were made). The second stanza doesn’t add much to the dramaturgy. This is why they choose to cut it. About the spoken text, it was also an artistic choice. It is the text taken from a translation of Hamlet by Victor Hugo, and it is Hamlet himself talking. In this performance, the lines between reality and what is happening into hamlets’s trouble mind were blurred. Having him talk at this moment allowed for two interpretations : Ophelia hears his voice in her head, and/or Hamlet is thinking about her, dreaming this.

extraordinaire! Quel plaisir !

Oh boy, thanks KZbin for recommending this again. I had the honor an privilege of being in the choir and assisting the Regie in the production of Hamlet in Argentina also conducted by Schvartzmann, so I'm quite familiar with how Historically informed these performances are, so I can appreciate how great this performance was. Prachtig!

Paddy818 thank you!! I’m happy you like it. Yes, the microphone did help in certain aspects, for not having to worry too much about projection (although it wasn’t really amplified so I couldn’t turn into a pop singer neither. But it allowed for “uglier” chest sounds, sounds that might not project into the hall but did fit the affect and were asked but the conductor. Physically, not so much though. It was more of a hassle to have to be careful not to wet it, touch it and not to sit on the box that is attached to it.

@@luciechartin894 Thanks so much for responding! It was all so natural and organic! Beautifully directed! It was really gut wrenching to experience. I didn't even think about the microphone and the fact you were working with what seemed like a bath full of water. Usually it's sweating that shorts them out but having to deal with both components and be so brilliant at the same time is remarkable. Once again wonderful work and thank for answering me!

I love how stunned people are at the horribleness of her mad scene, they’re almost afraid to clap. When it’s done right, that’s how it should be. Also I really appreciate that you actually have a chest voice, and that your middle isn’t just a whispy throw-away until you get to the high notes. So many coloraturas are just high notes and the rest of the voice is big yawn.

I'm speechless. To have even the slightest dream of being able to utter something about this, I would need a whole new language unlike any other language that has ever existed on Earth. It would require fundamentally new linguistic concepts and a completely new culture, and it would be cognitively impossible for anyone to converse in it. No sentient being or even multiple sentient beings in cooperation could create such a language. It has to be delivered to us from a higher power. And that wouldn't be enough, not even close. It would be just an infinitesimally small and meaningless step characterized by nothing but extreme desperation. Trying to accomplish such a feat would likely result in the end of the world and the replacement of the human race with nobler beings.
