You're the only crocheter that I've come across that "teaches" that the slip stitch creates another stitch. I always was under the impression that the slip stitch just sits above the stitch you slip into and isn't a true stitch.

I do the slipstitch above the chain, and that then turns the chain (with the slipstich over it) into a proper stitch that counts as a stitch! Does this make sense?
