I swear there’s actually a moment like three seconds into her “performance” in which her eyes dart to the left and she makes this face as if even she knows she’s completely off but in her head she’s desperate for it to work. I swear even she knows.

@@gdawgs101 I have a source. Myself! She was in a band after all this with my room mate and they would practice at our house! She was half-trolling(trolling wasnt a phrase widely used then) according to her. She was a lesbian(at least at the time) and said she was just trying to get on TV to 'get laid'. That said, she REALLY was the WORST singer and an oddball(the vibe isn't fake). Again, I heard many band practices until they kicked her out after a few months. Hope this helps!

In a way, Norton was equating American Idol to Kill Tony. Both go after nobodies, not making a living from singing/comedy, the real humor comes from the contestants performances and then crushing them after they've completely failed at the craft/art. Not saying there's anything wrong with that setup and content, I'm just surprised it's still going strong after so many years. It might possibly be the most perfect format for a show. This concept is still cashing checks decades after the Gong Show.. Also, RIP Cash Cab and Dirty Jobs, two great shows cancelled due to porn spin-offs. You can fuck up the lives of our dumb 18 year olds, but don't fuck up our game shows. I'm seeing the trend and Family Feud is probably next. Those Bastards.

Opie is sort of right and wrong at the same time (even just saying he's 'sort of' right makes my skin crawl) - they don't send producers out _looking_ for crazy, awful singers. The producers hold another audition before the one you see on the show - the one that goes out on TV is actually the 2nd audition these people have all been through. The first audition is in a normal room with no cameras and producers for judges. These producers filter out the mediocre and only let through the really good and really awful. But they tell the awful singers that they're actually really good, and feign enthusiasm for them, instilling these awful singers with tons of confidence. That's why these people all have this undeserved confidence and why they all look shocked when Simon Cowell tells them they suck. Because they were told by producers beforehand that they were great. So most of them aren't actually delusional or crazy, they've just been lied to and manipulated by the programme makers. I know because a friend of mine who has fairly good singing voice went to audition for it and when he did he was pissed off to find that the first audition isn't with Cowell or the other celebrity judges. And the producers told him he wasn't good enough to go through, but he's way, way better than the awful ones that _do_ get through, which means they're deliberately sending through terrible singers for the 'freak show' factor. Knowing this, you can't really watch it and enjoy the 'freak show' side of it, because they're really not dumb or delusional people, they're ordinary people who've been manipulated just to be humiliated on TV, and by enjoying their humiliation you're technically dumber and no better than they are.
@tarrasque4195 жыл бұрын
I honestly do not intend to come across like a dick here, but we already know that. We've known that for about 10 yrs. By "we", I mean Americans. I'm making an assumption here that you are not American, please forgive me if I'm wrong. I make that assumption for 2 reasons. 1) You spelled "programme" the way we spell "program". 2) You seem to have a very earnest but naive lens with which you view the whole concept of American reality TV. To give you an example, I'm in my 30's. Almost my entire life, there has been an abundance of reality-style TV shows that were widely watched and easily accessible. It started with MTV's Road Rules and just kept multiplying from there in slightly different presentations. We have all these dumb celebrity and lifestyle magazines here that people just eat up. Its mindless garbage. But I mention it because pretty much since the inception of Road Rules, cast members from these dumb reality shows would go to these publications and give these "tell-all" style interviews where they pull back the curtain and talk about how producers mislead/mistreat them and how the final product that goes to air is heavily edited and presented in a way to fit whatever narrative these showrunners want to put forth (ie they'll twist whatever really went down in a way that they believe will get the best ratings). I tell you all that only to explain that soccer moms and teenagers and all kinds of regular people read these dumb magazines and watch these dumb entertainment shows and it's widely known and accepted that the producers on these shows lie to participants. It's a very low form of entertainment, but I take issue with you saying that anyone who watches this shit is dumber than anyone who participates in it. If these people are deranged and delusional enough to allow themselves to be manipulated by these producers, then in my view they deserve to be ridiculed. They desperately need the wakeup call. Again, I know that it's low brow. I'm definitely not a fan of these type of shows. But i'm no smarter or more cultured than anyone who does enjoy them. We all understand it for what it is. They send through really good people and really bad people because that's what is entertaining. That's what gets ratings. Maybe 10 years ago that would have been a revelation but literally everybody knows how it works.
