The more I listen to the older material, with today's perspective, the more I'm recognizing that the deal with Opie is that he was very much a "radio guy"--structured and trained in more traditional radio media notions. So he was the one always trying to "keep with the program". You also hear him the one doling out the more "tropish" radio idioms that today sound really lame and irrelevant (who can take the whole "Whip 'em out Wednesday" stuph seriously now--it's such treacly radio nonsense). Anthony was just a really funny guy who didn't care about that type of stuff, which is why he brought something genuinely fresh (and continually evolving) to the show. The one drawback is that he could kind of go off the rails (albeit still in a funny way), without kind of an "old pro" to reel him in at times (however, nowadays it just sounds like a killjoy ruining a funny direction). Opie was career conditioned to think of the show as a series of "spots" filled w/ "bits", and you hear him constantly trying to corral the show into that direction. Anthony was just instinctively inclined to "follow the funny" down whatever rabbit hole he felt like, which is much more the way broadcasting and on-line media today tends to be. I don't think Opie ever learned to be comfortable with that less structured, "no bits" type of format, where Anthony and Jimmy could respond to it. So they still sound relevant, and Opie still doesn't.

NevrSilent And yet Opie and Anthony attack other typical radio shows as "Hackey" Opie, I believe knew he was out of his league and trying to exert any type of control he could. In his mind he put this together, he brought Anthony onboard, he's the "radio guy" etc...He really wanted to be a part of this, and not just the "straight man". Anthony was his discovery and from what I have heard Anthony deferred to him, to not rock the boat, even to the point that Opie was negotiating their contracts.
