In favor of the mash shuffling technique, as a commander/EDH Magic: the Gathering player, trying to ruffle a 100 card deck is quite painful and slow. As well as it's an unspoken rule to, while mash shuffling, to look away from the decks while shuffling
@Bluecrimson2177 жыл бұрын
I hear you on this, but then again I'm the madman that double sleeved all of my commander decks as pretty much all my play happens at card shops.

I've been exclusively Mash Shuffling for well over a decade. As some people have already pointed out, it's an unspoken rule to just look away while mash shuffling. Also, to avoid 1 card over another situation, allow the bottom pile to spread out a bit before mashing in the upper half. This should make it so that some cards stick together, adding to the randomness of the technique. Doing this 7-8 times should be enough to give you a good randomized deck. As for when it seems like your opponent didn't shuffle well enough, I always ask for me to do a final cut, where I divide the deck into 3-4 piles before putting it back together. I do not claim by any means that these steps will guarantee a fully randomized deck, but they're what I do to avoid riffle Shuffling and damaging my cards or my opponent's.

I'd call myself a casual player, I do sell cards that I'm not currently using in my deck. So condition is kind of a priority for me. What I do, is I put my thumbs on the top corners of the sleeves and riffle shuffle, and I haven't had any problems with damaging my cards since! The only thing to be careful of, is at longer tournaments, and doing that over and over, I usually leave with scratched up thumbs.

As a semi-competitive Yugioh player who is looking at videos from other Tcgs it’s actually very interesting to watch this. In Yugioh Riffle shuffles are frowned upon and are the sign of the heavy casual. Pile Shuffling is the only competitive form of shuffling. So I was watching how my cards slipped together during a mash shuffle and the interleave seemed to vary. Sometimes 1-1,1-2 or even 1-3 interleave. I'm at a loss as to how this is different from riffling since that seems to be the main thing riffling has going for it. I keep my cards fairly loose when I do it, so that's probably why I was seeing such variety in interleave.

He also makes the argument that when mash shuffling you might not get even piles of cards in each hand before you mash shuffle. My question is (just like you) how is that any different than riffle shuffling? Wouldn't you still have the possibility of having uneven stacks? When I mash shuffle, I do a cut, mash then I take about 1/3 of the top and mash into the middle, 1/3 off the bottom and mash, then cards from the middle and mash, then cut mash one more time. While I mash, I always do so into my left hand with the cards facing to the left and tilted downward so no one can see the card's faces. As far as riffle, goes, yes I want to preserve my cards, but mostly, despite practice, I can't seem to do it without flinging cards everywhere.

Doesn’t riffle shuffling suffer from the same problem as mash shuffling if you have uneven piles? It’s probably less susceptible to it and only really would happen if they were super uneven, but still would be an issue. Also, you can still stack the deck with riffle shuffles, so it’s something to watch out for. It’s super easy for someone to always have the bottom card drop first or the top drop last, which allows them to keep it there.

So I've been thinking about this a bit and here's my 2 cents in favor of both riffle and card preservation. If Pokemon produces cards that they know are going to have high after market value because they are required to play at a high level but also want to encourage fair play (at least through proper shuffling) and accessibility, then why don't they allow proxies for those cards if you can present them as being in your possession? Make is so you have to check the cards in for them to hold so people don't just keep presenting the same physical cards over and over again. It seems like you could use the Lele from the Worlds decks to proxy for the real thing as long as you use sleeves with opaque backs.

Hey, first, I love this vid! It helps so much since I'm getting into the TCG. Second, 7 riffle shuffles might be best, but that number is based off a 52-card deck. Just worth keeping in mind since most of the time people will be shuffling a sub-46 card deck (7 in hand, 6 prizes, 1 first turn draw) so 7 would be sufficient. However, at the very beginning of the game, it might be that 8 riffle shuffles achieves sufficient randomness on a 60-card deck instead of 7. I'm not sure what the difference is between 8 and 7, but since riffle shuffles increase "randomness" exponentially, it's worth keeping in mind that at a bigger card count, an extra riffle might be necessary.

Wouldn't a safe and effective way to shuffle is to let your opponent cut the deck two times then you lay all the cards onto the table and "wash" them. Then when it's all done, your opponent cuts it one more time(three total) and begin. By washing(this is a casino card game term) I mean you start moving all the cards that's laid on the table and mix them around for 10 seconds. The idea of letting your opponent cut your deck three times is so that you won't know where the cards are going since your opponents will cut it at random. If for whatever reasons you don't want your opponent to cut your card because you don't want them touching it, have the ref/announcer do it.

One complaint here. You call out Mash shuffling on the basis that a nefarious player could relatively easily look at their cards (especially the bottom card). From my poker experience, with riffle a nefarious player could pretty easily see the bottom two cards. Cheaters gonna cheat.

My only question is have you had to replace any of your cards due to the damage from riffing if so how long did they last?
@TrickyGym7 жыл бұрын
i have never had to replace a card from riffling - they always work fine in a sleeve

Another legit video as usual, best competitive Pokémon channel on KZbin by far. Thanks for this. I’d love to see a intro to strategy type video..stuff you wanna do to set up and how to look into the future turns...stuff like that.

I am wondering if this is a better option: have the players take the deck to a tornament and have the directors putting the cards on the computer and the players play it on the computer like PTCGO, so the computer shuffles it and it is harder to cheat. Merry Christmas by the way!
@mackdyegames30357 жыл бұрын
Problem is computer shuffling is not random. Its randomly random. Its so random that your deck would never work.
@dastrangedoctor7 жыл бұрын
You are right, but it does prevent cheating.
@dastrangedoctor7 жыл бұрын
Doesn't this prevent stacking?
@MikkoRantalainen6 жыл бұрын
Computers can do high enough randomless so that the "computer random" is not an issue. However, the algorithms required to do that are not simple. As they say, "The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance."

As a collector and a player I NEVER bridge my deck. With that being said what are the rules on bridging your opponent's deck? If a player asked please don't bridge my deck and they do what's the ruling? You wanna mash shuffle go for it as long as they're not trying to destroy them. I'm a honest player and turn my head with my deck at a heavy slant away from my face. Getting a good mix of random card's is my goal when I shuffle. More power to the honest player's shuffle and shame to the cheaters that have made shuffling a hard topic. Thanks for a good video!!!!!

As a general courtesy, I've never riffled my opponent's deck in a tournament. I mindlessly did it one time on accident, and I instantly realized what I had done and apologized to the player across me. He wasn't upset because he recognized it wasn't a malicious attempt to damage his cards, but I've definitely seen players flip out when they riffle someone else's deck. To add, I also flinch slightly when another player riffles my cards, even though I aggressively riffle my own, because I feel the same courtesy I extend should be extended by everyone. Also, thank you for turning your head when shuffling your opponent's deck. I find it extremely frustrating when people look straight down when shuffling when a big chunk of stacking/cheating is avoided by simply looking over your shoulder for a few seconds.
@bandalodyugitube7 жыл бұрын
If you ask someone not to riffle your deck, they shouldn't do it. It's disrespecting you and your property. I don't think it's enforceable, but it's certainly a bad thing to do.

You are an absolute monster shuffling your cards like that! It made me cringe SO hard trying to watch this... There's NO WAY I would ever hurt my $1000 deck by shuffling like that...
@ZxChrono9 ай бұрын
Don't ever riffle shuffle your opponents deck, #1 way for you to get a fist in your face lol. Just because you are okay with damaging your cards doesn't mean its okay to shuffle other people's cards the same way.

Top players generally don't care enough about their cards to double sleeve. Not saying i agree with doing that, but that's just how it is. Personally I would never play with a single sleeved deck.

concern on my ends not just money but i'm afraid of getting judge called by a bent card counting as marked
@natalieshampay2145 жыл бұрын
You can riffle lightly enough that the damage is minimal. If you bridge that helps bend the cards back flat. But try doing it very gently, you'll see the cards don't bend.
