A hint to people who are new at sewing... you make a mock up garment from the cheapest thrift shop material around *before* you cut expensive/difficult to find fabric.
@gylentia137 жыл бұрын
And if you can't find a deal at the thrift store, wait til bolts of muslin go on sale fairly low. I buy the 20 yard bolts or so when it's under $1 per yard and I save a bolt for when I need to experiment. Muslin can then be used for other things around the house after being used as a mock-up.

You can also make templates out of paper sheets to see exactly how it'll lay before even using fabric

You can also make a much smaller version if you can't find cheap fabric, small enough for a doll that way you can work some things out. Also, don't forget room for a petti! (unless you're song ouji of course)

i know!! I was pre-approved to stand in line, and after waiting an hour, the actual host took one look at us and said that's not lolita, get out of line. It was completely embarrassing, and horrible. We ended up all writing a letter to the provider of the convention, and they said because it wasn't a convention sponsored event, they can't have any oversight in how they ran their panel. Unfortunately that year a girl also got contaminated with nuts and that was the last year that the tea party was even able to have tea or food.

When I was into Lolita I sewed all my own clothing. I am tall stick with big boobs so brand stuff beyond some accessories was impossible unless I wanted my butt to show everytime I moved. I loved working with different materials like velvets and vintage laces and was able to create my own style that fit my body. I even got my stuff mistaken for Victorian Maiden a few times 😆.

As one pair to a plus size lolita couple (they are top heavy and I am bottom heavy), this video is a god sent. We make our own lolita because "brand" will NEVER fit us. We have been shamed in public about it and then told that our size shouldn't do lolita. How rude right? Personally as a male lolita- it is so hard to find good male lolita cords. It tends to be cheaper for us but then again, being plus size you get use to making your own clothes. Thank you Lor. You are a role model to my partner and I.

French lolita community is probably the worst, I saw ''ita'' (for me ita doesn't exist but anyway) simply not accepted and pointed out. I saw blog with thousands of anonymous posts insulting other lolita ( usually popular ones), I saw french lolita at convention in my country (I am from belgium) laughing at beginners. It made me quit the lolita community because it's already hard to handle ''normal'' peolpe laughing at you but it is even harder when it is from people who are suppose to share the same hobby.

@bedefancyalouette92494 жыл бұрын
I love this comment so much because its how i feel, i feel like if your in the lolita community you just shouldn't be judging others like that the word ''ita'' sounds like it was made up that people will use so they sound like they are better then other lolitas or something and i hate how people who are lolita are excluded because they don't perfeclty match the description or they don't buy from popular exspensive websites its stupid and that's why i don't really want to be apart of the community either although i do wear and own a lot of lolita i separate myself from the community.

Its harder for plus size lolitas when it comes to finding higher end lower cost dresses in a size that fits and also matches the lolitas specific tastes. Which leads a lot of them into pursuing the alternative making your own. so i think thats also an important thing to note.
@thisotakugirl10177 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Amstutz the funny thing about plus sized things are the fact that on all the websites Ive looked up I fine a huge amout of plus sized clothes and alot of regular + medium sized clothes, so I have to make my own stuff, because I have a naturally skinny waist and am flat chested. the problem with buying stuff is just the fact that it won't always fit you. (also if you someone can't fit into a large option then they should consult your doctor or dietion for there own long term health and wellbeing)
@theycallmemagic7 жыл бұрын
"higher end without being on the higher end of pricing in a lolitas specific taste" (that means im talking brand) 99% of brand is one size. And not being able to fit into large sizes isnt a great indicator of obesity because of how drastically inconsistent sizing is. because a large asian woman might be a completely different thing from a large black woman for instance and neither of them are necessarily obese just built different. not to mention how expensive healthcare and eating healthy is.(but then again so is lolita) but oppressive poverty aside theres always lolitas with kids or thyroid problems. So if you know a bunch of brand tier quality shops gotta share that. Also if you're too skinny to fit into lolita clothing in small sizes you might be underweight.
@thisotakugirl10177 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Amstutz I guess you have a point if someone wants specificly brand. I have found a lot of websites do have diffrent sizes and equivilate them to foreign sizes. if you look hard you are able to find quite a lot of non major brand dresses that would fit, and are reasonable cheap. I also say it is best to consult a doctor if you are over weight because there may be a food you don't prosses right or a medical condition you may not be aware of. I had a friend who was over weight and would refuse to see a doctor and would always say she was "proud to be plus sized" she died last year from a medical condition she was not aware of. its alway best to look in to medical well being. I also am not underweight, I just have a very weird build, broad shoulder, huge hips, but a skinner waste and legs, and also my lower to upper torso preportanet is off. no avrage clothes fit me.
@thisotakugirl10177 жыл бұрын
also I know healthcare is expensive, but eating healthy doesnt have to be. also, I (just so you understand) am the child of a single mother and our financial situation is....... very limiting. I have to work a part time job, and the whole reason I do diy my lolita is because I don't have almost any money to spend. The only times I buy things online are when I search the internat and find something extremly cheap. so I've never worn brand. so 1. that does make me clueless when it comes to people being brand puristents, and 2. don't just assume I don't understand having to find stuff as cheap as possible.
@theycallmemagic7 жыл бұрын
Wasnt assuming anything never said anything about finding anything cheap i was talking about the exact opposite its hard to find well made stuff that isnt exorbitantly expensive because most places make you pay almost double. ( also pls source websites)

Ahhh Lor I really want to say something and sorry if this comment is long but I've wanted to tell you for a long time and couldn't find the right moment! (Also sorry if this is overly sappy and weird!) So I've always been a huge huge fan of Lolita since I was in my teens but I had always been scared to be a part of the community. When I was about 20 I finally bought beautiful expensive AP dress from my local con but I didn't know how to coord it at all so i wore it with come forever 21 stuff and offbrand shoes and looking back on it now it was a total mess, but I got some weird negative reactions when I wore it to the con the next day that made me feel really discouraged. After going online and researching more I also became really intimated by the "rules" and also the negativity surrounding what "was Lolita" and what wasn't. Since then I never wore it again and I decided to hide my love for Lolita and just venture into different fashions. Fast forward to about a year ago I found your channel and watched a video you made giving advice on like "what to say to itas" and you gave the advice to essentially not say anything at all because just because someone isn't doing something "right" it doesn't give others the right to be negative towards them (or something along those lines). ANYWAYS point is that literally that video sparked my love for Lolita fashion again because I realized that even though there is a lot of negativity there is also a LOT of positivity from wonderful amazing people such as yourself and that if you love something you shouldn't be afraid to pursue it! This video made me feel along the same lines as that one and I've just always wanted to tell you what a huge inspiration you are to me. If you get to reading this novel I really appreciate it LOL sorry it's so long again. Love you so much keep doing what you're doing girl!

I copy and pasted this, texted it to myself and made siri read it hahahaha THAT'S SO SWEET!!! That is really encouraging for me to hear that my video impacted you in such a way! That's why I make videos like that and this one. I've watched lots of people leave the fashion because people were rude to them but they still love the fashion. I hate that, if you get tired of the fashion sure you don't have to wear it anymore but it makes me sad when people generally love it and get bullied out of it. It's like, we dress differently than mainstream society, we already get looks or questions or weird comments from people, we should support each other!!! Anyways, I'm proud of you for being brave to wear what you want! All of your larme and gyaru looks are SUPER ADORBZ and I know you'll be super cute in lolita if you decide to wear it

I h ave to say, I had a pretty similar experience. I dont think Lor is a "authority" on lolita, but she is such a fashionable person in my eyes, and such a positive person. I look up to her videos and i have since made more outfits, and tried more coords, mostly because of the positivity from Lor!. I channel that positivities when I meet other lolitas, other j-fashionistas in general, and anyone REALLY! It's not my place or right to put anyone else down, and they shouldn't for me. I love love love that she said don't let the fear stop you, because that is the best advice for everything in life. And i'm glad she said it :)

@boarhatsbestgirl41527 жыл бұрын
I too, have had negative experiences with people over "what is Lolita". I walked out of a recent event for Lolita because they were telling people what the "necessary essentials" were, where they were not allowed to shop, what length of sleeves they MUST wear, etc. Alternative fashion, like lolita and their subcultures are already scrutinized and looked down upon saying we "dress like dolls", "look like children"; so why further hurt the people of your own community by shaming them for not being able to afford an official brand OP or not being able to fit in the "one size" sizing of a lot of outfits. Handmade items are what will keep this fashion alive and growing. Thank you Lovely Lor for your supporting video and views and keep on seeing and crafting everyone!

Olive O'Connor That's actually not always true. I lost 75 pounds and actually went UP a cup size in the process. If you genetically have large breasts then you genetically have large breasts. Yes, gaining weight can add fat to your chest, and loosing that fat will take away. But no amount of loosing weight reduces the amount of breast tissue you have.

I almost want to send you a message about handmade lolita. I manage a lolita community in my city and I got some criticize from the other lolita community also in my town. They said lolita should be an elite with origin brand from japan. Meanwhile my LC disagreed. Because everyone can be a lolita, whilst they have handmade dress or branded dress, as long as they have lolita soul and pure lovin it. My question is, how can you handle the elitist if you are in my position? Because after million times mediation we are never talk each other. I hate to have bad relationship especially with some people I don't know for real. I don't want any lolita fight because different perception. Lolita is pure, but the lovers makes it complicated 😢

Oh boy, time for me to ramble! I can definitely vouch for the time that goes into handmaking clothes. I haven't made a lolita dress yet (although I do have plenty of patterns that I SWEAR I'm gonna use... eventually), and dressmaking is kinda challenging, actually. Plus you also have to figure in the cost of a sewing machine and whatnot. Thankfully my mom got a really nice one for Christmas one year that I've used a lot. My first big project was a full bodysuit for my Pyro cosplay which gave me a TON of experience in sewing (and nearly gave me heatstroke; seriously kids, don't make bodysuits out of flannel if you're wearing them in the summer!) I have actually sewn a dress before for my sewing class in school and that actually wasn't that bad, even considering some of the more complex elements to it (crossed straps, darts, lined bodice, and altering the pattern to get a better fit with the help of my teacher). Then again, I'd already had experience at the time. My advice to lolitas who want to start out with sewing their own stuff? Start off with skirts if you're new to sewing. Seriously, a basic elastic waist skirt is one of the easiest things you can make (aside from a pillowcase) and was actually one of the first things I made. Then you can build on your skills with adding lace trims, pintucks, pleats, and you can move onto doing tops/full dresses if you think you can handle it. Commercial patterns are available if you can find one that would fit Lolita (trust me, I have actually found a few), or if you're feeling adventurous and think you can alter it. That's actually one of the few things I have yet to master (aside from drafting patterns from scratch). Of course, some things you're just... better off buying. Namely petticoats. Seriously, I have one petticoat pattern and it takes 30 YARDS of material for it. Tulle is cheap but you might want something nicer and it still adds up. Plus the time and effort that goes into it, you might as well buy one (I've heard that Classical Puppets makes nice ones for a reasonable price).

Oh my god, how could I have missed this???I've been sewing for ten years now, and tho I have some brand clothing, I still love making lolita clothes! However I've expanded more to making fairy kei clothing, particularly from recycled clothing ( my shop is very similar style to Spank!). I definitely agree on making clothing being pricey, especially since material and good lace (And I mean really good lace), it can add up to between $20 AUD to $30 AUD for materials. I have listed a few handmade lolita skirts in my shop, but I had to increase the price recently to cover the ungodly shipping costs. I try to make my stuff as affordable as possible, but it's not easy.I look forward to your indie shop guide!

As a seamstress first and Lolita admirer second, I feel like a lot of people think generally it’s “cheaper to make than buy” when it comes to any kind of clothing. It’s best to assume this is never the case. (Sometimes very rarely and lucky yes, and when our grandparents were children perhaps, but now it’s really a skill of its own to find quality materials and notions for cheaper than retailers, remember you’re competing with economies of scale!) So I’m really glad and agree with Lor when they say to make it because you want to, not because you think it’ll be cheaper, cause it really won’t be.

Lolitas who brandish around what is ita or not, should consider when this all first started. ALL Early Lolita was handmade. Brand is not everything. Subculture should never be about brands (like it is now in the Gothic community as well). Being Lolita like any subculture is about being different, anyone can take cash in hand and buy and look like anyone else, handmade is unique.

I like it for the contrast with other lolitas that are sometimes so over the top that they forgot to stay grounded or even coordinated with themselves. It's an outfit that shows lots of potential!

I have just found your channel in the last few days and thank you so much for the videos you have made. I love the look of lolita and have always wanted to wear it but have yet to find anything that I would actually wear. I started sewing 15 years ago because I could never find clothes I liked and as a goth/alternative kid in the 90's I was thrift flipping before it was a thing. When I asked a lolita community for pattern recommendations I was told that "you can't make lolita clothing unless you have bought several outfits to see how it looks on you." Which to me doesn't make sense because you can see how it should look and buying something doesn't mean it will fit right. Not to mention why waste money on something that I'll never wear? Anyway, watching your videos has helped me to see that I can be me and still dress this way. Thank you for being you.

I tried making a lolita cosplay of cheshire cat once and thought it came out super cute but in the end I got shut down by the lolita community :( I made a 5 tier skirt using references on google (I really dont know anything about lolita but Im a cosplayer) honestly it scared me away from ever trying my hand at lolita again :(
@SweetestSweden7 жыл бұрын
Well, to be completely fair, Lolita is clothing, not cosplay. Inspired coordinates are one thing. Lolita-inspired cosplay is another thing. Calling your cosplay 'lolita' generally gets frowned upon. Cosplay is donning costumes, and Lolita isn't a costume. We in the community get harassed enough as is by the general public without the two being confused for one another, you know? That said, don't let that criticism stop you from making genuine Lolita clothing! You can always try your hand again.

Thank you for this video. I am new to the fashion, and will probably never live the lifestyle, but my daydream thoughts about dressing lolita would be the runway versions of AP...no print, tons of layers of lace and ruffles and more bows than should be decent on anyone. Ha. And being plus sized, my mind immediately went to sewing a dress as a dream project. I really appreciated your perspective!

I like that you said that it's not always a cheaper route! I am a seamstress, though I make 1950's retro clothing, they have the same silhouettes as lolita like the fabric eating full skirts! When you need that much fabric it's not cheap! Cute fabric for a dress can easily cost $50+, plus any nice trims you want, thread and zipper in coordinating colors, any pattern you might use. Then there's the time you put into it! People always tell me I should sell the clothes I make, and I always tell them it's not profitable, by the time I paid myself even minimum wage for my work I would have to charge $200+ for a dress.

I'm fed up with the elitist anti-ita lolitas (no aliteration intended. Or maybe). Lolita can also be an inspiration for loliable outfits without being bigot strict about the rules and the brands etc.

I have a lot of Lolita-esque costumes and gowns since theyre often frilly and cute and elegant and somewhat historical since my version of Lolita is mostly 1840s to 1860s since its silhouette is very cupcake like and they have a lot of hairstyles that are seen on lolitas (I mean this in a nice way and no shape or form in a bad way) nowadays and they’re complimented with hair accents or bows or flowers and the bonnets with frills and flounces and flowers and yes even more bows.

i always make mine, every year, I've improved a lot over the years but it does always lurk in my mind that someone will say it looks ita, i wear it anyway. I think they're pretty dresses, though flawed for sure, i'm still learning. I have a lolita friend who i ask for help every once in a while on making choices, like which lace (she was the one that taught me cheap lace with square flowers is not good but knitted lace is good) since she told me that my dress improved so much. Honestly, making dresses is so much fun and guarantees you'll have a 1 of a kind

I would make Lolita dresses for myself, but I'm not able to use a sewing machine without being scared I would sew my finger to the fabric... and I don't have the patience to hand sew...
@Mimiki2037 жыл бұрын
When you use a machine you have to keep your fingers away from where the needle is and make sure you go at a medium pace, too fast and you'll end up with really ugly thread spots that just jumble up together, too slow and you may as well be hand stitching.
@Zaolan1237 жыл бұрын
Lizzy Pad most machines have a little guard so that you can't see your fingers
@whossoul7 жыл бұрын
I've been sewing since I was 7 years old.....so for almost 20 years now, and have never once sewn my finger. I've actually injured myself a lot more hand sewing that using a machine! My mom has been sewing for 45 years or so and has only had the needle puncture her finger once in all that time.
@wizardcon77627 жыл бұрын
Lizzy Pad there are a bunch of sewing machines now a days that have finger guards and stuff like that. I recently got a new one with a finger guard and haven't gotten stuck by a needle once. It's a Brother computerized sewing machine. I recommend you don't give up if you really wanna make clothes! (And in some cases what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!)

the only thing i want to point out is that taobao shops/ other online stores isn't always a cheap way to get lolita depending on your size. plus size lolitas don't have as many options, especially from taobao because their sizes tend to run smaller :(
@fafniricedragon58327 жыл бұрын
My personal opinion on hand made pieces is that it is more unique than brand pieces since more often there is only that particular piece. It's one of a kind and that makes it unique and special. And I'm certain that the makers think it is their most special dress. I also think lolitas that make their own pieces are fantastic and so skilled in dress making. Because I certainly don't have that amount of skill...wish I had. I can make a headdress tops. Or a skirt but that's it. And don't get me wrong, I think brand pieces and taobao pieces are great too.

I do hand made lolita usually because of few reasons. I have a bigger bust size so I am yet to find a dress out there that will fit me just right. Being an artist myself, I often have a mood or an idea for an outfit and cant find anything similar existing. Money. Lolita dresses are expensive, and I have salty import taxes so I usually avoid buying anything above 20$ online :/ Lastly I do it for the sake of sewing. I adore sewing and its always nice when someone complements your outfit and you reply that you made it! I do have to note that lolita fashion isnt my main style, I just love wearing different types of dresses and skirts. I dont go to hangouts since I am not really a fashion type person, I am more of a crafty type? Most of the lolitas I happened to talk to online kinda just ignored me from their circle, while other seamstresses and cosplayers have accepted my work, so thats that

The reason I was curious, I kept hearing "get brand" as part of how to-s, how much it sucks to be a tall lolita, and how things seem to be one-sized. Love the prints out there, but... I have the tools, I can make a gingham or solid OP.

I follow this KZbinr handmade Lolita and she said that spend a lot of money Lolita when you can make it yourself she gets all her fabric at the local thrift store for really cheap price I love watching her videos and learning how to make beautiful dresses I've already made one that turned out really cute the first one ugh but of the second one Kawaii super cute thank you for saying that homemade is just as good as buying the real stuff because I wouldn't mind buying from some of those who make because then it makes the fashion expand and then more people will be able to see the things that people have made that can be worn by other people things that can be made in Canada America or any other country outside of Japan

I'm fairly new to the Lolita community but I have always loved it. I've always been much of a "kawaii"/punk girl. I started making my own dresses and skirts because it was cheaper for me at the time. But recently purchasing a brand item, I'm amazed at all he details that go into these dresses! That being said as a plus sized girl I still find it easier to make my own clothes. 😅 I need to find a brand for plus size but I haven't found any for sweet Lolita as of now.
@someone-uz4mi6 жыл бұрын
If you're okay with Taobao, I know Souffle Song/Neverland (same company but they called themselves Neverland first) does custom sized dresses. There are a few dresses that look like they may fit as sweet Lolita. However, I'm new to the community as well, so I might be wrong when it comes to categorization.

Wow. I found this now and am thinking of starting in lolita, but I have some very specific ideas and like making my own clothes. But I was hearing a lot of taboo about handmade lolita and I was worried about not being able to get into the movement if I couldn't make my own clothes... I figure all of the designers and etsy shop owners had to be handmade at one point or another?
