OPPAN YEOGNAM STYLE! The Failure of the South Korean Grand Prix (2010-2013)

The South Korean Grand Prix was part of F1's Asian expansion between 2004 and 2014, and was one of two new circuits around the turn of the decade with the Buddh circuit in India, near New Delhi.
But while the Indians built their track close to a population centre, the Koreans didn't. And because of this, it only struggled, as well as having not done all the things they wanted to do with their project. The hotels, the entertainment centres, none of that was built, so they had a soulless, uninspiring track that was fun for the drivers, but was in the middle of nowhere.
So how else did it go wrong? Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

Kia started off what Toyota is now, plastic underpowered shit, but damn are they solid, run well, and have all the bells and whistles. Ill absolutely take Aidans neighbous Cerato, have driven them, theyre great! Maybe not on the sedan/hatch side but i can tell you from experience if youve got a choice between a base Merc GLA SUV and a top level Kia SUV which would be a little less... *take the kia* - GLA is literally the most pointless f'ing thing ive ever driven and... i wont even tell you what i reckon the sole selling point is because ill get yelled at.

F1 and Bernie weren't exactly making it easy on circuits at the time either. I remember reading a story about how, after signing the initial deal for the GP, the organization wanted to start promoting and advertising the race, only to be told that their contract (worth hundreds of millions dollars, mind) didn't include the use of pictures or videos of any F1 races. So if they wanted to show the Korean public what F1 actually was, they'd have to fork over another couple of million USD.

I remember reading a story from one of the teams a few years after they stopped going to South Korea. When they showed up for the second race they discovered that nothing had been cleaned since the previous year. The garages and the suites were j6st like they'd left them, including food and drinks in the refrigerators. And the power had been turned off, so the food had been sitting in a hot, closed refrigerator for a year.

Korean here. Just like to point out there is a typo on the title. It's Yeongam (pronounced Young-am) And by the way, aside from the fact that the circuit is too far away from Seoul and it's county region with 20 million populations, Korea has never been a place of motorsports. Even in 2024, most people think of illegal street racings that threats innocent people instead of an actual sports when we say 'car racing'
@chrisguardiano6143
@chrisguardiano6143 20 күн бұрын
One thing people may not know about is that before F1 came to South Korea, Champ Car (the series that was created out of the remains of CART after it went bankrupt in 2003) wanted to race in the country. Champ Car first wanted to do a street race in Seoul in 2004 on a track similar to the one in Gran Turismo 4 but the local authorities rejected it. They then shifted their focus to a new circuit being built in Ansan for 2005 & that circuit was on the schedule but Champ Car did not actually race there due to the circuit not being ready. The same thing happened in 2006 & in 2007 the final year of Champ Car its date on the schedule was replaced by the street race in San Jose (which itself was not a great circuit).

It would simply cost to much, farm land down in the south is much cheaper, to be fair they really should of built it in Ulsan (Hyundai city) or near it although it’s near a very historical area for Korea kinda like Kyoto. But would have been on the KTX train line and only 2 hours from Seoul and a hour from Busan. Mokpo is only know for gangsters and fishing like building a race track in hull

It's a shame it didn't do well, the 2010 Korean Grand Prix is an understated classic. I remember not liking driving Yeognam on F1 2013 (I didn't like Buddh much either). Though it was amusing in that I had a glitch which affected several circuits, of which Yeognam was one of them, in which most of the ai would drive straight off at a certain corner every lap and pile into each other! I meanwhile, would a) gain several positions and/or b) gain several seconds over my rivals. Also, Super Formula is set to race in Korea next year, but not at this track. It'll be at the Inje Sspeedium. And maybe Formula E could come back to Seoul, but I doubt that'll happen.

I've seen very short highlights of the 1958 Moroccan GP (on one of Murray's VHSes) where he says "there's a terrible sight, it's Lewis-Evans's Vanwall on fire" before the footage cuts back to Moss. He said it calmly enough that it comes across as though he assumed Stuart has escaped the wreckage.

The circuit getting the green light just 13 days prior to the event doesn’t sound too bad compared to certain recent ‘circuits’ which didn’t get the green light until mere hours before first practice (Jeddah, Vegas, Miami) I also fully believe that a circuit should have to prove itself with national championships to earn a place in F1 and to host a minimum amount of race weekends to keep its place on the calendar, protecting places like Spa, Monza, Zandvoort etc and forcing places like Shanghai, Jeddah etc, obviously you can’t really hold street circuits to this unfortunately

I always really liked the Yeongam circuit! I didn't really care that they never built the city around it, it was a really good layout and I thought it made for good F1 imagery and racing. All three sectors were very distinctive, and if it never had big buildings, it had this misty mystique around it. The third "street circuit" sector still worked for me with its hemmed in walls. Your video does remind me of the pit lane issues (not ideal...) but maybe there were better solutions? I'd support F1 coming back to Yeongam!

When I heard that Korea was going to host a Grand Prix, I gasped. I did two tours to Korea when I was in the Army, 1989-90 and 1992-93. I knew that motorsports were not a thing in Korea. When I was there many people still did not have a car. Yes, Seoul has a huge amount of traffic and traffic laws are interestingly almost nonexistent, but outside of a few cities people rely on buses to get around. Riding a Korean bus is an adventure in itself. Now, seeing where the track was located made it even worse, your right, there is nothing around there. The average Korean living outside of a few large cities is more concerned about food and paying whatever bills they have than motorsports. I could tell you stories about what I saw in the countryside, but I won't let's just say that Bernie was looking to squeeze more money out of the government and sink the race than really building something. I can't think of any race that was brought in at that time that is still going outside of Bahrain. I am so glad that the Troll is gone from F1.

This track was not supported by Koreans either. Most F1 fans wanted it to be a street race held closer or in Seoul. It was built there because the ruling political party was dominated by people from that region and they wanted to waste tax payer money to develope that area. The problem is, that area has nothing, and Yeongnam is not exactly a place where even Koreans go to visit. The World EXPO was also held around that area, and well...not that many people visited that due to the same reason. The sad thing is Yeongnam is still empty and people are leaving that area because there are no jobs available. There is talk that there is another private organization trying to bid for a calender spot with a street race in the planned city of Songdo in Incheon. Songdo already has hotels, mass transportation infrastructure, is literally next to Incheon Airport and close to Seoul. But, judging by how well (not well) the Formula E event held on a street circuit in Seoul went the last time it was held there, I don't know. I live literally across the street from where that Formula E event was held and the crowd wasn't exactly spectacular.

I was under the impression that the circuit was in the middle of nowhere, but 250 miles from Seoul and 150 miles from Busan??? South Korea isn't that big-it's like they tried to place the circuit as far away from the two largest metro areas as possible.

They sold the circuit on the basis that they would develop the area around it and make it into a city centre circuit if I recall.

It's not that hard to set the car up for that track. What's the distance from the start of all the corners compared to the front start ?

Melbourne GP should by all rights have a full car show about 5km away at 'Jeffs Shed' for the week of the GP, absolutely epic chance to show off literally everything F1 plus all of the support event vehicles. Instead all we get (not complaining, especially as i worked this event a few years back) is the Sauber two seater doing runs from the Melbourne Town Hall up and down a couple of laps and thats it :/ They did try running something... i think it was the 2 seater, down Great Ocean Road... i dont know what idiot thought of that but it couldnt have been anyone who knows anything about F1, too fast for mechanical grip, too slow for aero, and how the hell youd set up the gearbox for corners where you either need to be flat out or about to stall.... nfi. Button in McLaren at Bathurst.... oooh mama... but not F1 event related sadly. And doesnt happen enough.

Swamp = A critically endangered wetland of global importance, vital for the millions of birds migrating thousands of miles every year up the western Pacific to the Arctic, Siberia & North America. There are hardly any coastal wetlands left in the region. Building the track there was controversial at the time. Now look at what's left. It's hardly the new Monaco they were claiming it would be. Such a tragedy.

This GP was dead on arrival. Right from the start, it seemed like no one was really interested in it. I can't even recall it being advertised at all, unlike other new races at the time. The track itself being bland as heck and the fact that it was in the middle of nowhere didn't help. Whole thing certainly felt more like quick cash grab rather than genuine effort to create new event. Indian GP at least had potential, if only it weren't for surrounding shenanigans. I think that it should come back, whether on Buddh or not.

Hello Aidan: I think you have made a spelling mistake with "oppan:. The word written in Korean is 오빠. The final character is pronounced as "u", as in "fun". In some circumstances an "n" can be added to end, however, I don't think you meant that in this case. By the way, young women call their older brothers oppa. Have a lovely day.
