Can't believe Christopher Nolan actually did it.
Editor: stephenseanford
Clips: Graciously provided by Trinity and Beyond & ‪@atomcentral‬ Check out their incredible documentary here: www.amazon.com/gp/video/detai...
this is a meme. a parody of behind the scenes specials and nolan's commitment to doing everything in camera.
"Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Academy Award® nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Oppenheimer also stars Oscar® winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar® nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.
The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations."

The best practical effect, that Nolan has done so far was - hands down - when he flipped three entire blocks of downtown Paris on its head for Inception. Still can´t believe, the city´s mayor agreed to let that happen, but I´m thankful he did. They even had people glued to the floor of their apartments, to prevent them from falling out of the windows. This way, they wouldn´t mess up the shot but the flipping of the city would still factor in the weight of the thousands of people living in the area, making it more authentic. Incredible dedication to the craft!

Little known fact about this film but they really did build an atomic bomb and let it off in the Universal backlot. Nolan strives for realism and he realized that CGI, optics and miniatures just weren’t going to get the job done. That’s why he had a falling out with Warner Bros. they simply didn’t have enough money or backlot space for this massive project. Also the radiation and fallout was something of an issue.

@8866 Panda I get a notification each time you post it, where I’m able to view the comment myself (since I’m in this thread), but it still doesn’t seem to be staying for other people. You might want to put the story in other parts of the comments section on this video for it to permanently show up for other people. Sorry man :/ Apologies for the late response too btw. I appreciate that you’re trying to get this story out. It would definitely seem more valid with an actual name in the quote though, even while I don’t necessarily believe that the story is fabricated.

Special Effects Director Michael Bay wasn't sure about dropping an actual ICBM on the Hawaiian village of Naalehu, but after some convincing, Christopher Nolan assured him that it would only render the area uninhabitable for about 50 years. Local governments took a little more convincing, until Nolan promised to sell them any remaining weapons that weren't used during filming or as evidence in international war crimes tribunals. It's thanks to directors like this that we have such fantastic films.

I found it very disturbing when I learned that Christopher Nolan purposefully put a bunch of orphans right under the bomb and told them to wait there for a few minutes while he drove away. Very strange, considering that never happened in real life.

With just the bomb, he could see in Cillian's face that he just wasn't feeling it - sure, it's scary, but it's missing something, just something small. Nolan had to get his leading actors to feel a real sense of threat and awe. Can't spell awe without orphans.

Yeah, it seemed almost credible to me, at first. I thought - maybe "real" just means BIG conventional explosion...? Like a MOAB? A million gallons of aerosolized gasoline? Maybe, just maybe a really _small_ tactical nuke in the 1kt range? Wait...is there a size limit in the test ban? Is it just the big ones we can't set off any more? It's a testament to Nolan's reputation that those thoughts could even cross my mind! Nicely done...
