A movie about a father's promise to her daughter, which transcends beyond space and time. My all-time favorite movie.

It's funny. The first time I saw this movie, it didn't resonate much. I thought it was too cerebral and not -- sentimental? -- enough for my tastes. But something has changed over the years, and now it's definitely in my Top 10 -- maybe even at the top of those 10.

As to your question about the ending with Murphy’s children, Nolan deliberately created an ambiguous ending. One theory is Cooper might have actually died falling into the black hole. The Mann theory about seeing your children before you die, may have been prophetic. The fact that Cooper survives falling into the back hole, arrives in a tesseract, changes earths fate, gets saved with only minutes left and meets his daughter, surrounded by a mysterious, almost dreamlike family that doesn’t interact, implies that it may be his last vision before his own passing. I don’t agree with the theory for one reason. Cooper reaches out for Brand in the wormhole, on his way back to Saturn. If he didn’t survive the black hole, he wouldn’t have been there to reach out to her in the first place. Just my opinion.

He isn't going to execute plan B. Plan A has worked and all of humanity is on its way to Brand's planet. But, Brand does not know this because she has no communications with Earth after the destruction of the Endurance. As far as Brand knows Plan A failed and everyone on Earth died. Cooper is going ahead to let Brand know that both he and the population of Earth have survived.
@Mikeyw9119

Why would they need to execute plan B? They got people off of earth and are all heading to the new planet together. He’s going ahead of them to either get brand and bring her back to one of the stations or just stay with her and wait for the rest of the population to get there. Cause she’s out of fuel and was barely able to get there, and is also under the impression that they failed completely and that she’s the only person left alive

I predicted it as soon as they had the first handshake during the wormhole scene. To be fair, my brain has been trained to spot this kind of stuff by reading hundreds of sci-fi novels, especially old ones, as a teenager. Sci-fi isn't just about spacecraft and aliens, if you dig into some of the more obscure sides of sci-fi you can find some absolutely wild plots with batshit insane (but still mostly internally coherent) world building. Some sub-genres of sci-fi are the wild west, having the revelation of "the aliens helping us were actually humans from the future" is nothing compared with "the aliens we were fighting turned out to be experiencing time backwards, and when we rounded them all up to nuke them we actually caused their birth as a species, because their end from our perspective was their beginning from theirs" which is an actual plot twist I read in an actual old novel (it was never translated in English, so I'm not too worried about spoiling it)

1:07:09 They didn't believe Murphy, they just thought she came up with the solution herself, and probably tried to turn her dad into a hero by coming up with a nice story. Remember, it was a secret NASA mission, not an official mission known to the whole world. Not even Murphy's brother knew what she was really working on. Also, simply believing a man in his thirties is actually your grandmothers 124 year old farther, is a strange situation to be in lol

@@nicolasfernandez3731 Murphy says "They thought I was doing it all by myself" 56:44 which is only logical, because who would really believe in someone saying "my dad spoke to me from my bookshelf, and that lead me to the solution of how to harness gravity". The Doctor knew who Cooper was because Murphy told everyone. When they walk to the house you can hear Murphy saying "Well, my dad was a farmer. Um, like everyone else back then. Of course, he didn't start that way..." 55:55 It's not Coopers house, it's a recreation of Murphy's house, meant to teach kids about how Cooper Station was made. It's basically a museum, with a paved trail leading up to it. Remember, Cooper left over 90 years ago, so his past is now a part of history and Murphy is probably seen as a celebrity similar to Einstein. Everyone only knows who Cooper is, because Cooper is Murphy's dad. However, having been found floating around in space on his own has probably turned Cooper into a celebrity now lol

@@reactswithjax There might be issues bringing a whole station through. Also, they weren't receiving signals through the wormhole, so they wouldn't have known that there was a livable planet on the other side until Cooper returned. All they knew, at that point, is that several people had gone through the wormhole and never returned. I always figured that with Cooper's return and confirmation of a livable planet, they would start planning to relocate everyone to the new planet (which would probably take years and years). Cooper simply went ahead of them to help Brand start a colony and prepare their new home for the arrival of the rest

Yeah, they probably need real confirmation that Edmunds' planet is actually habitable. Only Dr. Brand really knows at that point. So Cooper is going there to meet up with her to get the confirmation so the migration to Edmunds' planet can begin. Black holes are by far my favorite thing in existence to talk about. They are far more strange and interesting than they could portray in the movie. Absolute extremes of nature with properties that warp the way we see the universe (literally). They used mountains of scientific data to digitally construct the black hole Gargantua in the movie, giving us the most realistic simulation of what the area around a black hole would look like to the naked eye. Not long after this movie released, we got our first REAL picture of a black hole and it was basically a 1-for-1 comparison. It's so satisfying to know that the science we understand exactly lines up with the objective reality.

Note the chord played when Murph discovers the message behind "STAY". It signifies Coop and Murph's connection with each other (their love/graviry bond). Fun fact: it's the same chord played when Coop realises he needs to go to Brand. They also have the same love/gravity bond. Which is why he was able to have that "first handshake" with her.

This movie is an absolute 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗖𝗘, my all-time favorite! I had the privilege of watching it in the theater, and let me tell you, it was a mind blowing experience. The visuals, the score, everything about it was pure cinematic magic. I heard they might bring it back to theaters for its 10 year anniversary, and if that happens, I’ll be there without a doubt! It’s not just a movie; it’s a cinematographic treasure by Christopher Nolan, who in my opinion is the best Movie Director of this era. If you get the chance to see it on the big screen, don’t miss it!

Great reaction! I like that, ultimately, this film is about the triumph of family and connection over cold science and rationality. All of the lack of attachment and disconnection from others harmed the mission in the end, and it was only Cooper's love and attachment to his daughter that solved everything. People make fun of this film for "love solving everything", but really it's just that Cooper was able to save everybody BECAUSE of the love he had for his family that drove him to push through where others (like Dr Mann) gave up. Who in their right mind would willingly go into a black hole? Someone who was trying every option possible to get back to his family, and the bulk beings use that to their advantage. Also, because Murph loved Cooper and her family so much, she returned to the house to help Tom and his kids and found the watch from Cooper, creating the bridge that was needed. I think Brand's speech about love confuses people because she's sort of meta about it, so they start to think about it being an actual measurable force like gravity is, but really it's just that attachment to people is actually a GOOD thing and something to be desired.

This movie was very smart, sad and epic all at once. One of Nolan's greatest films. James Newton Howard does a great score. I think the part about the teachers conference was also very funny. The school officials were cringeworthy. A great film with a sad but awe inspiring story If you want to see a great Matthew McConaughey, I recommend "Sahara" a great 2005 action adventure. McConaughey stars with Steve Zahn, Penelope Cruz and William H Macy. A great swashbuckling film. Finally, regarding Michael Caine, I recommend "Noises Off" a very funny 1992 film adaptation of the play of the same name. Caine stars with Carol Burnett, the late Christopher Reeve, (Superman) the late John Ritter (Threes Company), Julie Hagerty and Denholm Elliot. Peter Bogdanovich directs. A funny film. Great Review Jax!

The most significant thing I got from this movie is how much more time I need to spend with my daughter and how I need to stay more often. I think that's the real meaning behind this movie. How time is fleeting and being in the moment is the most necessary thing. I understand the astrophysics of this movie, but I can see Nolan's underlying message. Be present for those who you love the most. Time is relative, love is forever. It's easy to get lost in the process. Having something to love is so much more important. Otherwise, you will be lost in your aspirations and miss everything that is most important.

Btw. That "stupid poem" is actually quite a powerful piece of writing. I listen to it myself from time to time. It laments the fact that even a powerful influential man will die. It ties into my own life and honestly helps me cry sometimes when I need a good cry. It was written about the authors father dying. "Rage against the dying of the light. Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears." I don't know if a single piece of literature that could ever come closer to describing how my father died on a cold muddy hillside in the middle of nowhere with me unsuccessfully doing CPR for almost an hour until paramedics could get to us. Not that it's important but I would consider my old man as one of the most powerful and influential men I've ever known. Before I was born he was a founding member of a motorcycle club (yes the famous one you're thinking of) and had moved literal tons of drugs across borders for people. Maybe his choices weren't the best but it at least brings me peace that people who do incredible things with their lives will still die on a random muddy hilltop just enjoying their 4wd vehicle.

The data to solve gravity equation is right there in Murph's bedroom all these years right after when Cooper left home. Even when the adult murph took the watch from the box, she looks at it, smiles at itz (coz her dad gave) thinks that the second hand is twitching due to damage coz she had thrown it out of anger when her dad left. But after recreating the incidents that happened in her childhood, after realising it was her dad who communicates through gravity, then she looks at the watch to only understand that the second hand is not twitching exactly it's just moving coz of gravity.❤ Once the movie ended, I felt like as if I've woken up from a good sleep or after a deep meditation. Jonathan Nolan (Chris Nolan's brother) wrote the script where this movie ends when Cooper goes into the black hole to die. Chris saw the ending and said it will be too bleak of an ending (although realistic), and added the new ending you see with tesseract and Cooper surviving, meeting his daughter, and going to meet Brand on Edmund's planet (and possibly live as a couple).

I can't say with any high degree of confidence that space travel would be like sailing, but for a long sea voyage you usually acclimatize after a couple of days so you only need medication for a short time. I've tried 21 days at sea and after 36 hours I was OK. I did get one little spell of sea sickness after spending a couple of hours in the galley over a hot stove during a particularly rough weather day.
