You know Nolan, at the very least, discussed the possibility of calling someone to see if he could film a real nuke going boom.
@sqlevolicious Жыл бұрын
That would be so incredibly illegal domestically, and would upset literally every country on earth. We have signed pacts to never do this, and don't forget the potential millions of people in direct danger from the radioactive fallout. There is no way to practically recreate a fission weapon, thankfully, and unfortunately there is no way to practically resemble a fission detonation (RDD is not a fission detonation, not even close). The largest man-mad explosions (and accidentals) to have ever occurred are nearly 100 times smaller and several hundred times less powerful than the smallest fission explosion ever created. Nolan knows this, which is why the explosion in the movie looks like a small gasoline explosion you would see in a mid budget action movie. Which is really what they are ever limited to, due to safety. It's immensely disappointing for anyone that has seen fission detonation footage, but still a masterpiece of a film.

I’m looking forward to this film. So far, my favorite onscreen depiction of this subject was the 1995 made for cable tv two-parter Hiroshima, which had Jeffrey DeMunn as Oppenheimer and Richard Masur as General Groves. That film also depicted the political forces in both America and Japan (the film had co-directors, one English and one Japanese), as well as the wrangling going on between war hawks in DC and others on Truman’s cabinet who were not fans of the bomb. It covered the time between FDR’s death and Japan’s surrender in excellent detail.

I would have no problem with a realistic, digitally enhanced nuclear explosion. CGI can be done and keep the cinematography of a film. A lot of times when it is used, people don't even notice it or think it is still all practical. I don't get the boasting of "practical effects" by some people when many of their favorite movies use the effects tools quite well.
@sqlevolicious Жыл бұрын
It works for some things, and doesn't work for others. In the case of replicating a fission detonation, CG is necessary. The trinity test in the movie was a huge let down and just looked like a small gasoline explosion that movie productions are limited to due to safety. The audio was great, the practical effects otherwise were great, but the explosion itself was not even remotely close to what a fission detonation looks like. I think Nolan failed hard to understand how immense a fission detonation is, and there is no practical way to replicate it in any way. The scene would have been so much better with a CG simulation.
