it is not a validation, it is an acknowledgement that what a reader of bhagwad gita (here oppenheimer) felt on seeing a power beyond imagination, a power beyond scale of human capabilities, a power able to destroy millions in seconds, gave him similar feelings to what the description of lord krishna is written in bhagwad gita, just that, nothing more, and you may say why i do not give such acknowledgement, because my low brain powered boy i had never a pleasure to see a nuclear bomb in person.

J Robert Oppenheimer was an admirer of the bhagavad-gita since he studied Sanskrit in the 1920s and fell in love with the text it does not mean that he's an authority on or anything like but what he saw in front of him reminded him of the imagery that came to mind when he read the he didn't say one religion was right or anything like he was just using a metaphor to describe how he felt

@@pauldirc.. But while fighting superstition are you sure you are not becoming blind yourself. Most scientific concepts stems from Philosophy and metaphysics. Example: The concept of computer programming comes from 'Logic' in philosophy(Also studied in Mathematics). The concept of Law comes from 'Ethics' in philosophy - and there are countless other examples. And Bhagwat Geeta and Vedanta are subjects which have indeed evolved for thousands of year(at least more than 2000 years). So it is quite natural that many of the scientific concepts will have their roots in it. Of course there can be parallel studied which may have come up with similar concepts. And Of course Quantum Physics does have extremely similar concepts to Vedanta. I mean by no means we should think ourselves superior to others because of our heritage but at the same time lets not be blind ourselves,

@@adityabhattacharyya8727 i am trying to read schrodinger book what's life , there is chapter of vedantic vision in that book which talk about vedas and eastern philosophy, what i understand they were finding some interpretation of quantum mechanics or how to reliase reality through it , but i am not fully convinced by them Here is the passage from his book - "Suppose you are sitting on a bench beside a path in high mountain country. There are grassy slopes all around, with rocks thrusting through them; on the opposite slope of the valley there is a stretch of scree with a low growth of alder bushes. Woods climb steeply on both sides of the valley, up to the line of treeless pasture; facing you, soaring up from the depths of the valley, is the mighty, glacier-tipped peak, its smooth snowfields and hard-edged rock faces touched at this moment with soft rose colour by the last rays of the departing sun, all marvellously sharp against the clear, pale, transparent blue of the sky. "According to our usual way of looking at it, everything that you are seeing has, apart from small changes, been there for thousands of years before you. After a while -- not long -- you will no longer exist, and the woods and rocks and sky will continue, unchanged, for thousands of years after you. "What is it that has called you so suddenly out of nothingness to enjoy for a brief while a spectacle which remains quite indifferent to you? The conditions for your existence are almost as old as the rocks. For thousands of years men have striven and suffered and begotten and women have brought forth in pain. A hundred years ago, perhaps, another man sat on this spot; like you, he gazed with awe and yearning in his heart at the dying light on the glaciers. Like you, he was begotten of man and born of woman. He felt pain and brief joy as you do. Was he someone else? Was it not you yourself? What is this Self of yours? What was the necessary condition for making the thing conceived this time into you, just you, and not someone else? What clearly intelligible scientific meaning can this 'someone else' really have? If she who is now your mother had cohabited with someone else and had a son by him, and your father had done likewise, would you have come to be? Or were you living in them, and in your father's father, thousands of years ago? And even if this is so, why are you not your brother, why is your brother not you, why are you not one of your distant cousins? What justifies you in obstinately discovering this difference -- the difference between you and someone else -- when objectively what is there is the same? "Looking and thinking in that matter you may suddenly come to see, in a flash, the profound rightness of the basic conviction in Vedanta: it is not possible that this unity of knowledge, feeling, and choice which you call your own should have sprung into being from nothingness at a given moment not so long ago; rather this knowledge, feeling, and choice are essentially eternal and unchangeable and numerically one in all men, nay in all sensitive beings." -- Erwin Schrödingerwhat life

An Appeal to authority has become so mainstream and pushed like propaganda. Another popular example of this kind is the Natraj placed in CERN being associated to how cosmic dance of destruction has some scientific end and "hey, if an institution like CERN has a figure of a hindu deity, in a scientific institution, they must think it's greatly scientific or lends some inspiration to it. At this point if you start pointing out the number of absurdities in a single such argument, it increasingly becomes redundant.

Don't forget to include that he read the Gita through the lens of a westerner. There are many things in the Bhagwat Gita which are of no problem for someone who's reading it outside the influence of Indian society, like its ardent support to the Varna system and how it is divinely created (The whole concept of Karma Yoga is based on Karmavibhaga which is divinely done based on one's Guna which is the basis of one's Varna and Guna comes from birth so ultimately Varna comes from birth), a westerner can easily ignore it as narrow thinking of people of old times because he doesn't believe it's said by God, but it becomes very important when you see it in the context of Indian society and you read it as an Indian.

Vimoh, I understand we have a habit of exaggeration but for that reason if u provide Strawman Fallacy that's no acceptable. If u get butt-hurt by anything with Indic civilisation then what's the difference between self-proclaimed nationalists and self-proclaimed liberals? It's true he was nowhere close to conversion or neither were his scientific works influenced by scriptures but it is well-recorded how deep profound effect in his personality was left by the indic school of thoughts. It was so much that he started learning the pure sanskrit language itself at Berkeley in 1933 by Aurthur W. Ryder, an indologist. Not only Bhagavad Gita but also he studied other works of literature such as "Meghaduta". He later cited the Gita as one of the books that most shaped his philosophy of life.He wrote to his brother that the Gita was "very easy and quite marvelous", and called it "the most beautiful philosophical song existing in any known tongue." He later gave copies of it as presents to his friends and kept a personal, worn-out copy on the bookshelf by his desk. He even nicknamed his car Garuda,(Vahana of Vishnu). In a conversation with Science philosopher David Hawkins he concluded the hindus were far more deeper than the greeks. His interest crossed all limits that his colleague Isidor Rabi remarked that his interest over sanskrit literature also harms his attention in science. Clear texts with primary citations are available on wikipedia. So, yeah these are important . Not for pride, but the deep profound effect of one of the most important personalities of the last century as part of the study of him(hope the film portrays it well). But what we got to do? Well, of early western scientists can cause a scientific revolution with pov of reviving ancient greek scientific inquiry, why can't we do with ours? The hindus are falling since the last millennia and a half...but they have immense contributions in the past. Those could be inspiration for modern achievements.

However, someone like Oppenheimer being born far away from India or hindu background atleast found something amazing and thought provoking in Gita, many Indians, they never bother to read what Gita has to offer. Don't be lazy to just keeping your ass on chair and shouting for evidence, do some hard work become a seeker, read Gita and bhagavat and upanishads. It was a great moment - a life changing moment and in that moment he quotes the Gita Do you realize how in a great stressful moment if you think of something, it is something that you spent time on, read, understood, dwelt on? He didn't just quote something at random - he quoted from a book that he had read deeply . One of the disappointing thing about Atheists is that they fail to realize how different Hinduism is from other religions I always say if the Buddha had been born in Christian or Muslim lands, he would have gone the same way as Giordano Bruno or the Mayans - tortured and killed! His books burnt, his followers killed! There would be no Buddhism today! If the Mayans had invented Yoga instead of us Hindus, that would be lost to us because the Christian conquerors burnt ALL their books & forced Christianity on them Even today, here in the US, there are many Christians who refuse Yoga because it is Hindu! So many small religions have been crushed this way - as they say dead men tell no tales & we know nothing about these lost Buddhas! But that did not happen in Hindu India Other religions and people are not hated, not even Atheists Atheists live in fear in several countries - namely Islamic countries Jews face attacks all over the world but a Christian and Muslim media covers it up!

The funniest thing is when many hindus claim that nuclear bombs were already there at the time of Ramayan in the form of bows and arrows. 😅 Now I am not a nuclear physicist or know much about how such weapons work but don't we need machineries, industries and entire group of scientists in order to devise such serious technolgies? It is a serious delusional among many hindus. And your argument and the rebuttal of this logical fallacy is quite good. You can always take some example from a well known scientists who has invented some technology or transformed the world, and has quoted some text from holy books around the world. I mean Albert Einstein was much greater than Oppenheimer when it comes to scientific achievement and he also mentioned that all the organised religions are pretty stupid. He was a penthiest as I am aware of. Also if Oppenheimer was such an ardent follower or admirer of Geeta then how come he didn't practice the religion and the teachings it prescribed for all? I cannot find much evidence for the same. It is just another desperate attempt by many theists to further their religious claims

I just feel like we all are looking for the exact same thing - What are we here for, what are we supposed to do (as opposite to the question "what is the meaning of it all"?) My current take on this, is that we are supposed to better ourselves by providing help to others. In the end... are we not all the same person?

There is no need for religion to be a good or better person. If you really want to be a good person without religion then humanist philosophy is the best thing ever. These religions and blind followers only need validation for their religion by hook or crook . But they don't know that science and religion are two different things. Me as an atheist living my every moment without religion no need to believe in anything, no hope for miracles, not a deluded person only living the life with my best. Sadness and happiness is the part of life these will come and go and will teach us lessons of life and make us better humans to approach our next day in another way.

Vimoh, I agree with you that we shouldn't care about validation from the west. But unfortunately we are so colonial in our minds, that we still need that validation. In the 80s and 90s and till the early 2000s yoga was not an accepted thing in main stream. You would be belittled if you said you had a yoga class in the morning. But only when the west accepted it then it really flew in India. Prince Charles needed to come and endorse the Mumbai dabballawalas ... and now the dabbawallas are giving lectures on six sigma processes. All said and done the white man made hindus ashamed, self loathing and deracinated from their culture. I think they did an fabulous job!! This continues to be the trend ... it makes us feel progressive. But that's the privilege a hindu enjoys I guess. The west has defined what is Morden and civilized. Eating with hands might not be considered civilized for example. The words - morden and civilised have a colonial and western connotation. The west has set the standards for us and it is unfortunately embedded in us. Yes, we do still need that validation unless we feel decent amount of pride in our own culture and heritage. If the Whiteman starts appreciating Sanskrit, so will we ... because we are all lord Macaulay products ... I wish we could get rid of this need for validation like you are saying, but chief it's going to take a few generations. You as an individual might not need it but others might feel the need. Whiteman can only bring back our sense of pride in us and make us realize what we have ... in my humble opinion.

Max muller hired hindu pundits for translation work. He was himself interested in upanishads. Even swami vivekanand praised max muller as expert in upanishads and praised his work. This lost in translation fallacy does stand chance.

Hello Mr. Vimoh, your explanations are very good and factual. Also I have seen that you talk about hustle culture and motivational propaganda spread by new age gurus. Here one thing I have observed that Indian parents don't question the education system and don't question the government also because there is 2 fundamental reason: religion and hustle culture. Why am I talking about education system because Indian parents have a mindset that if anyone do just hard work they can be successful and when they see that some people are becoming successful from very poor background(people or any student who claims that he comes from a poor background and some of them don't have a proper house to live)then why not others can be successful just by hustling?
@koushikghosh2615

Even when people see that anyone who comes from very poor background has cracked any competitive exam their hustle culture mindset get charged up and they don't necessarily ask any question to the system. Somehow I have seen that hustle culture also charge up the religious, non questioning mindset.

@@vimoh so what? Oppenhimer was a brilliant scientist who did change the course of history, he wasn't just some random 'white guy'. The bombs did bring world peace in someway. He was at the forefront of the greatest war in human history and the Gita did help him to draw moral values and he did see him as Arjuna in the battle. Obviously his views shouldn't be used to validate a religion I agree to that but I think in oppenhimers case as a Hindu he inspires me to study gita and find what made him read it and admire it. I know so many (most) Hindus have not even read Gita and Gita is not some magical book, its a very practical book about duty that anyone should read. I also acknowledge that admiring your own religion without studying it and understanding and not criticizing it is peak ignorance and reason for violence we see in todays world.
