Oppo Find X: 3 pop-up cameras, no notch

Oppo Find X takes a unique approach to fit a big screen in a small frame: it's hidden the entire camera assembly in a motorized, slide-up assembly that pops up and disappears as necessary. Its 6.4-inch OLED display stretches all the way to the top of the phone and curves on the sides, much like Samsung's S9. Tbh, since I got the latest update on my OnePlus 3T, I've been relying fully on the face recognition feature to unlock it. It seems to be pretty fast, accurate and feels confortable to use. Therefore, after using it a couple of days, using the fingerprint scanner isn't a big deal to me anymore, and I was pretty eskeptical about it. So I'll definitely be looking into getting this phone.

The fact that big players like Apple and Google are undeterred by such designs is solely because of the software ecosystem they possess. The fluidity, the software support and the continuity Apple is trying to achieve is what makes them so valuable. Once that is perfected the design can be mastered. Oppo had done a swirling camera phone way back but it never made it big, that show how important your software is.

There is another concept which uses a REAR-CAMERA-ROTATABLE-FLAP to acheive bezel-lessness as shown in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2bKYZh8h62Ln9k (the concept starts at around 4minutes) It is not as cool looking, but is cheaper and easier to achieve using existing technology. Plus, no need to worry about motors or sand going inside. And, you can have a case with a hole for the camera.

OPPO officially claim to have 300,000 working cycles of this mechanism. So if the user uses the camera (including unlocking the phone) less than 160 times per day (which is plenty), it works for around 5 years

But why do they need to put the back camera in the pop up module? The back camera could just be on the back like the Vivo Nex and only the front camera would pop up. Also they should include a fingerprint sensor as it doesn’t seem very intuitive or efficient for the camera to pop up, scan your face, then go back down. Honestly, for all of this trouble, I’d rather have a notch.

I have to take a pairing knife to my iPhone 6's lightning port every 6 months or so to clean out pocket lint etc. I'll be curious to see how the mechanical aspects work on this device long-term.

let me not even start on accidental drops when camera is opened. Let's say you take the phone out of the pocket camera opens up because "auto unlock" and ur phone slips... and falls directly on the transforming part RIP

I think it is an amazing device, but the most challenging thing about dealing with the Oppo Find X is to get used to a much slower unlocking system that a fingerprint sensor. However, getting rid of that horrendous notch is great.

Good luck finding a phone case for this one. The Vivo NEX does the same but the camera sled doesn't spans over the whole with of the device. So making a case for this device shouldn't be a problem. The case could just have another cutout at that point. Of course the Vivo NEX only has the front camera in the sled and not all those face recognition sensors. But the iPhone X shows that those sensors don't have to span the whole width of the device. Otherwise the notch would be as wide as the device and wouldn't be a notch anymore.

PokeTomodachi no Apple is keeping that notch this year and it was expected that they will either reduce the size of notch or completely remove it and put the front cam inside the screen.
