5k is the max but you can hold more I'm the gift box but they can only be held in the gift box for 90 days or so, so if you never use your 5000 gems your gift box gems will dissappear after 90 days without claiming you can hold more then 5000 but not by much only if the shop offers 1 gem for free usually during Anni it can go over 5k
