Why are there silver nuts and gold nuts? And why are the orientation of these nuts important?
@christophergoodwin68463 жыл бұрын
One side is right hand thread other side is left hand thread. Basically so you don’t have to remove the link to add length or shorten them, you can do that while they are installed on the truck. We installed them in that orientation based on pictures from opt off roads website.

Hey I got a 3 in lift and it drives fine I bought apoc lowers they look the same as these there is instructions that says what length to put them if u have 2,3,4 in lift but since my rigs drives fine with the oem length lowers can I just match the length?
@TimmyTheToolman6 ай бұрын
You can match the length of the stock lower arms, the reason you would want to adjust/extend the aftermarket rear lower control arms is to adjust where your rear axle sits to clear bigger tires when flexing the rear AND mostly importantly, to correct your pinion angle. But I personally left the lowers stock length and extended the rear UPPER control arms to get my pinion angle back to a reasonable spec. - Sean

Hello my name is Steve I love your youtube you and your friends have helped me more then I could ever repay. I have a question about the rear upper control arms. I am installing a 4.5 inch lift I have adjustable rear upper a lower arms . Can you give me any advice on how to adjust them also eveything I have read so far says just to adjust the upper. So you dont have to adjust the lower ? Any advice would be great as I do all my own work Thanks Steve
@TimmyTheToolman3 жыл бұрын
We will have a video coming out soon as part of the Marlin crawler transfer case install that will include OPT OFFROAD’s upper and lower links and how to adjust them. But basically, you want the opinion angle to be as straight as possible.. you can measure the angle of both flanges as a rough measurement, then from there adjust the upper and lowers accordingly. You will want to point that axle back to its original position but be careful about adjusting the uppers, because if you extend them too much, they will make contact with your upper crossmember

may sound like a dumb question, but did you have to get an alignment after installation?
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question, but no, you don't need an alignment after replacing rear control arms. You would only need an alignment if you replaced the front lower control arms or replaced the front upper control arms with aftermarket ones.
@blacksmithcrazy Жыл бұрын
Yes you do need an alignment due to your Sai adjustment. Your fronts are aligned off your rears and if you didn't adjust your arms correctly. You will be dog tracking.
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
@@blacksmithcrazy The key words are "if you didn't adjust your arms correctly." If you match your measurements, left and right, you shouldn't need to get an alignment. And, the alignment tech is probably not going to touch adjustable rear control arms anyway. They're gonna mess with the cam adjusters and outer tie rods and call it a day.

Fantastic video like always, Tim & Sean. I have some driveline vibes after a ~3" lift on my 522,000 mile '01. From what I've read, the likely culprit is pinion angle rather than an issue with the driveshaft itself.

did u guys adjust the links length or just kept it to factory length?
@TimmyTheToolman3 жыл бұрын
Sean kept them at the factory length. You could adjust the whole axle back in order to gain a better fit for larger tires and you could tilt the axle up a little to gain a more optimal pinion angle.
@MarkamisPrime2 жыл бұрын
What is it that people are talking about when they say that you need to cut/modify the upper axle side mounts to fit the larger seany joints ?? Had this already been done? Or am I trippin??
@TimmyTheToolman2 жыл бұрын
Not sure Mark. Sean and Chris didn't need to cut anything. They might be talking about if you change the pinion angle enough, the upper control arm mounts can hit the frame above at full compression.
@MarkamisPrime2 жыл бұрын

So are the lca for pinion angle and the upc for caster? Or do both upc and lca contribute to both? Would you suggest i remove my drive shaft and just measure both ends of pinion angle while making tiny adjustments on the control arms? Should i set all this up while the weight of the car is on the tires or while the car is suspended by the frame on jack stands? Thanks again guys!
@TimmyTheToolman2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, both the lower and upper rear control arms are adjustable so you can get your rear end as far back or as far forward as you'd like. When running much larger tires, Jason told us people will push the rear end a little further back to help better center the tires into the wheel wells to limit rubbing. For dialing in the pinion angle, the uppers will be used for that. Once you've got the rear end at the spot you want it, you'd make adjustments to the uppers to dial in the pinion angle. I don't understand the mention of caster for the rear axle because caster is something you only worry about for front end alignments. To make adjustments for the centering of the rear axle, you'd want the wheel un-weighted so the adjustments in length could be made easier. You would then lower it to the ground to confirm you have the rear end where you want it. For dialing in the pinion angle, you'd want to do that with the full weight of the vehicle on the wheels so you can accurately measure with the pinion angle with a digital gauge attached to the driveshaft. You would want the rig on level ground with the parking brake off so the rear end could slightly rotate from the adjustments you're making to the length of the UCAs.

Based on 12:32, it looks liike it is impossible to make the length of the upper links shorter. Sometimme, you want them to be shorter to adjust the angle of the rear differential for a correct pinion angle.
@TimmyTheToolman2 жыл бұрын
Well, this is for applications for when people lift their rigs, not slam them. When you lift the rig, you're going to want to extend the uppers to correct the pinion angle. You're never going to want them shorter than the stock length to dip the pinion towards the ground.
@zbyh20112 жыл бұрын
I have an FJ with a 2" lift. After the lift tinstallation, the angle of the rear differntial is 4.1 degrees and the transmimssion block is 3 degrees, which creates a 1.1 degree difference. it must be zero. In my case, one way to correct the dif angle is to shorten the upper rear link.
@TimmyTheToolman2 жыл бұрын
Well technically a stock pinion angle is more like 2-3° … although you want to get your pinion angle closer to exact 0° after you lift your truck, you don’t want it at that degree when the rear end sinks down due to added weight you’re carrying in the back. It will go negative which would be a bad thing.
@TimmyTheToolman2 жыл бұрын
@@zbyh2011 Are you sure you're measuring the angle right. When you do a suspension lift, the transfer case moves higher than it was. This steepens the driveshaft angle. I don't see how you'd need to shorten the uppers. You'd want to extend the uppers so it tilts the pinion up to give a better angle for the driveshaft.
