I drove a clapped-out Solo once- it was notoriously underpowered, so some of the drivers used to go up the 'box manually using the lever. I did that out in the sticks somewhere whilst changing up from 1st to 2nd and the bus just redlined in 1st! Cable had disconnected from the gearbox! :-D

It's weird knowing buses that used to be fairly new to me are now in their retirement years and are soon to be preserved or scrapped; pre-2000 buses like these are getting increasingly hard to find across the UK. Sadly I wouldn't be too surprised if it turns out this Solo has now been scrapped.

That poor gearbox :-( An Allison 2100 would be an interesting replacement for the old AT545; would make this the SECOND early Solo with one, because it was already done to an independently owned T-reg :-) I don't think the original gearbox was in a bad state, he just wanted a quieter one with an extra gear haha

The AT545 is dates from the 1980's. Its mechanical operated gearbox with no lock up. The later Allisons that are fitted to Solo's 04- are much better.

Not the driver. It’s an automatic gearbox, and it’s quite old, bearing that in mind, it can be very dodgy

It happens to our darts. I believe its where the engines stay on the 2nd gear long enough that the gearbox struggles to change into 3rd. My theory though lol

This is a very common problem with Solos as these are old gearboxes that were fitted and have been uprated and they basically get worn. They are not broken. They work brilliant, just sound a bit old. An a Dart shouldnt sound like that, as far as i know they have a different gearbox
