When i lived in my last house i had a trio of crows that would come every morning. They knew I would put out something on my lawn for them to eat. If I forgot or was late i caught holy hell from them, LOL. I moved away and I have to admit that I miss those guys a lot. They were so funny and so smart.

Do crows eat pecans? I've got a big pecan tree in my backyard and would like to attract birds, especially crows, with the nuts, if possible. How would i do that?
@t-and-p3 ай бұрын
Crows are omnivorous and pretty opportunist, so whether you'll be able to attract them in will depend on whether you have any crows living locally and what other food sources are available near you (if there are easier sources nearby, they will go to those first). I've found that what they want to eat depends on the weather/time of year. In the winter months, they want fats and foods that are easy to digest and full of energy. In the summer, they're more interested in lighter foods, although they will still grab a few "high energy" pieces first. It's worth looking in your local area and seeing what's missing. If, for instance, there aren't any/many fresh water sources (streams, ponds, etc), then popping in a raised bird bath may help to get them into backyard, and then you can get them interested in the food from there. If you have crows near you, you could try going to them, feeding them, and then once they trust you, they are liable to follow you for a short way. That might encourage them to your backyard. If there aren't any locally, though, you may struggle. I'd also have a look and see if you have any predators that frequent your garden (and that tree), as that will put them off. Popping a bird table up, that has good visibility around it and bushes/coverage they can fly to nearby if they get scared, will encourage birds in. Corvids (the family of birds that crows are part of) are very clever, so once they realise that other birds get fed at your house, they're far more likely to check it out. Personally, I'd start by putting out pecans that are shelled and broken into pieces, along with maybe something like suet pellets or dried mealworms, to give some variety (our crows always eat the suet pellets/mealies first, regardless of the time of year). If they can "grab and go" they're more likely to try a new place, than somewhere they have to spend time prepping their food (which could, potentially, place their safety at risk). They will learn how to do it over time - especially if you prep them in front of them - but making the food easy pickings is a good way to attract new visitors, especially opportunists like crows. Good luck! Hope you get them to come and enjoy your garden. They're amazing creatures, full of character, and a joy to spend time with. Thank you for caring about them and trying to encourage them in 👍
