We have a raven who is a tenant on our deck. I built him his own apartment/box with heating, water, and feed bowls around it, then he setup his nest in it the way he likes it. Everyone calls him our pet, but he isn't, he's a good friend and our roommate. When I sit out there to have my coffee we talk about the local news and the weather, then he likes skritches for a while. Frequently he brings us shiny and/or interesting things to cover his rent, he even found a 14k gold chain once, and then later most of a $5 bill. So he knows value when he sees it. 😆

They remember faces. I try to feed every crow I meet. Occasionally a random crow in a random place will fly over my head. In my crow voice I call "hel~low CRO Bro" When they call back CRROOw just before they pass me, I know it's someone I've met before. Now is the best time of the year to make friends because there are a lot of youngsters about so more opertunities to feed and engage with the present and future crows families.

Crows are so freaking cool. There's no way they aren't self aware. The way Lorena was grieving her lost children, and how Bo empathized with her by laying down with her. I think by laying down they were expressing their idea of death along with crying. Truly incredible creatures.

I had a pet crow as a boy, he was a fantastic mimic, he would call kids in the street in their Mothers voice, he would curse in neighbours voices, he chased other crows out of the street, he was very well fed, everyone in the street fed him snacks. He would sit on the light pole and greet me when I came home from school. In wet weather he would sleep in the eaves of our front veranda. I was drafted and didn’t get home for 5 years, he disappeared while I was gone. Home was never the same, I never even slept there after I got out of the Army, it just lost its flavour.

I was homeless for a bit in Portland and one day I got an offer to interview for a job I really wanted. I burst into tears because I did not have enough money for the bus pass I needed to get to the interview. Then a crow flew over me squawked and dropped a very run over, very flat but pockmarked dollar bill. With the crows gift I made it to the interview and I will never forget that gift, it change my life, I got the job. Before and since then crows have dropped me all kinds of 'presents' from flat marbles or pennies and quarters to shiny pieces of this or that. I adore them. I feed them often and talk to and sing to them.

As a child my father often brought home injured animals from the large construction projects he worked on in the city, to our small country home. My favorite was a crow with a clipped wing and an injured foot I named Squawky. I nursed him back to heath and one day he simply flew away. This made me both incredibly proud and a bit sad. For years after we would have crows land on our back deck peck at the glass door until they saw someone then fly away. And on the deck without fail they left us gifts. This is one of most precious childhood memories 💖

This is such a sweet story! My younger sister passed away a couple of years ago and 2 days after she passed, a crow with an injured right leg appeared in my front yard. She was hopping along with a limp, but yet she came very close to me squawking. (At the time of my sister's passing, she too had an injured right leg and walked with a limp so I wondered if this was a message for me of something larger in life) At that time, I didn't know much about crows and wasn't sure what they ate but I knew I couldn't go wrong with nuts. I had unsalted nuts on hand and put a few on a dish and she hopped right next to me, and looked at me as if to say "thank you." She's been a frequent visitor every day throughout the day and her diet has grown quite extensively. She loves mealworms, berries, and hard boiled eggs and I love her! Sometimes she brings family with her, but she's the only one that lets me get within a foot of her. I love that I can really look into her eyes and see her beauty so unclose. You did a fantastic job on this video and it's quite informative.

Thanks for this video. I’ve had a few crow friends in my life. Mostly one at a time. I live near Portland and had an evening caregiving job in the KOIN building . I had such joy watching the crows coming in for the night, and being on the 20th floor gave me a “ birds eye” view of building top roosting areas. While there I had a couple crows who would come to the balcony and visit. Since being burned out by the wolf fires, and losing our forest home, and now living in the burbs with four trees in the side yard of a duplex I decided I had to bring my wildlife friends in . In a year I had gathered a few squirrels to mess with, but told the neighbor I was going to make crow friends. Amazingly, she was all for it. This spring I had a crow. I named her Ysabeau. She came everyday for food. Soon I realized she had chicks, so every morning she got scramble eggs, peanuts, and raw meat as I had it. I never feared feeding because it was all organic. Soon her husband Fable came to help feed, and their last years chick too. The children, there were two are now learning to eat on their own with the guidance of the family. They have moved into trees near the back of the property, and come when I call out the window. Having the brain capability of a 7 year old makes them delightful little friends. Thank you for your delightful video.

I love your Crows ! The area I come from in Australia has only Ravens, no Crows. The Ravens have white eyes when they grow up and dark brown as babies and young ones which seems like the reverse of the Crows you have. Ravens are far more people shy than Crows ;maybe because where I live people don't like them ! I've even had letters in my letter box ask me to stop being friendly to the Ravens ! The Ravens come close but I haven't managed to touch one. You are so lucky to be so close ! I am friends with a local flock and they follow me and call out to me where ever I walk . I love two in particular , one called Waru and his mate Bran and they bring their babies to me every year . They come to my front gate every morning and ask me for a treat. They love cheese and cat biscuits, fruit toast, bananas and walnuts best .Sometimes they bring me treats in return such as macadamia nuts in the shell and once on Christmas Day ,a candle ! Because I live by the sea the Ravens go fishing in the rock pools for muscles and shell fish, crabs and small fish and it is amazing to see them.

Once they get to know you and if you're kind to them they don't fly away. Before I moved, I had daily conversations with the crows that came around my house. It was part of our routine, the crows and I. They're lovely, intelligent, appreciative, and hilarious beings who are great conversationalists. Most animals are. We humans just don't tend to listen. I do think initial contact likely varies from region to region depending upon what that particular group of corvid have been exposed to in their human contact. Crows are amazing. I love them. They have so much character and individuality. Good luck getting closer. If it's hot where you are, offer them some fresh water. They'll remember you for your kindness. 🦋

What really helped me was using a camera with a good zoom to see minute details, but in time you can learn to tell them apart by features, behavior, and territory.

I feed dozens of them every day in the downtown seattle area and have done so for years. They will follow and swarm around me, sit on fences, stop signs no more than a couple feet away. I caw at them and they caw back. They'll brush up against me when I walk. One with a mangled foot on broadway I feed out of my hand. They have gifted me presents and follow me. If I hang out on a street corner it isn't uncommon to have 30-40 of them hang out too on telephone poles above me, in small trees, then they follow me home.

1:27 😳 Did that crow just sneeze? Anyways, great story and video! Some of the crow strategies mentioned in this video are absolutely amazing (such as Bo targeting dog owners)! For 10 years , driving home from work-along the Great Highway in San Francisco, California. The road runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean. Many afternoons, I watched about 4- 6 crows try to imitate the seagulls. The Gulls would lift off the cement banisters/ sea wall and hover in the air. Just floating & swaying with hardly any efgort. The crows would stay on the sea wall & try this maneuver over ,& over again. The 1st year, the Crows where clumsy & could not hover for very long at all. Fast forward 10 years: the Crows. 10-12 would now push off the top sea wall & hover with delicate perfect balance!!!

It's mad how little fear corvids in Ameica have for humans. Here in Europe they all avoid us as much as possible. I'm in Ireland and we dob't have carrion crows like that we have the grey crows, rooks, ravens, jackdaws, way too many magpies and a rare sight are jays.

I know people in Europe who have strong bonds with wild crows. I think it depends upon where you are and how the birds in general are treated by humans.

USA has a lot of crows in campgrounds that are accustomed to being fed as well as city birds who get treats from meals. There are a lot of city/forest suburb mixtures that allow these birds to thrive. It's different in farmland areas where birds are disliked for damage they do to crops. It's also different in the big cities where birds have no natural habitat in which to survive.
