LOL my man. Yeah I actually struck a devil’s deal. I really DO need an ultrawide for work because otherwise I would need two monitors - and since working from home I just don’t have room. So made the compromise and got a gaming ultrawide. Unfortunately, my gpu is/was not strong enough to satisfactorily drive the monitor - so now it’s AMAZING for work. Like really amazing. BUT - for gaming it was just OK but a downgrade from my 16:9 - so I actually sold my gpu on ebay since prices were crazy. And in the meantime I’m using an old backup GTX 1060. So currently - I really can’t game on my ultrawide - and I’m just waiting for an RX 6800XT or RTX 3080 to come into stock so I can use the money I made from selling my old GPU to buy! So it’s been bitter sweet.

I'd rather watch 21:9 movies on a 16:9 OLED TV for the immersive picture quality. Black bars aren't noticeable due to the OLED pixels being turned off. Same goes for 120Hz PC gaming on an OLED TV in which you can force a 21:9 image on the 16:9 TV. Nobody makes 21:9 OLED monitors unfortunately.

I bought my monitor primarily for video editing but also for some gaming, and what it came down to for me was the realization that a 4k monitor had the exact same number of horizontal pixels, but 50% more vertical pixels, and a 32” 4k monitor is almost as wide as a 34” ultrawide. So for video editing I can use the full screen and then for gaming I can change the resolution to 3440x1440 for almost the exact same feel as the ultrawide would have given me. And I love being able to see a full resolution 1080p video while I edit it, WITH a crazy wide timeline. It’s the best.

perfect timing on the video! i've just gone through both UW (34gn850) and 4k (27gn950) and i decided on the 4k. i found UW to be a bit too big of a screen because i do like to sit relatively close to my display. and i've already got a 240hz monitor for competitive gaming so my 4k display is just for casual, single player experience. great video, and not enough of these UW vs 4k reviews on YT
@IBradFrazer3 жыл бұрын
I prefer Ultrawide because it changes up how you play and experience the game, while 4k is just a sharper 1080p image with the same aspect ratio. I have a 34" (3440x1440), 120Hz, G-Sync, IPS Display with a 1900R curve rating, and I love it! I've had this monitor since... early 2018, so 3 years now and I got it as cheap as £800/$1,100, which is unheard of for a monitor of this quality back then. I think 4k is great... for big TV's, but for gaming I prefer the extra immersion the 21:9 aspect ratio gives me, and it isn't as demanding as 4k.

Yup. Even with new generation hardware, there are only a few games out there that you can play at 4k 144hz. You'll never get any open world rpg at 144fps on 4k without substantially lowering the graphics, which defeats the whole purpose of having a 4k monitor. If someone is looking for a monitor with the emphasis on gaming, 1440p is where you need to be.
@R1987R4 жыл бұрын
@@MrWitz90 don't completely agree on that, mostly because of the just released GPUs. Say the 38inch 1600p ultrawide in Warzone I am hoping to get up to 160fps with a 6800XT or 6900Xt with some settings tweaked. I am now getting avarage of 100fps with a 1080ti on 1440p with some settings tweaked so I don't mind turning down some stuff for the fps gain. I feel we are slowly surpassing the sweet spot of 1440p if you don't mind spending the money on a high end GPU.
@MrWitz904 жыл бұрын
@@R1987R You will not be getting 160fps on 1600p with any hardware without significantly decreasing your graphics setting. You may have spikes of 160fps, but your average will be closer to 100-110 with dips in the 90's. There are plenty of KZbin videos that will show this. Besides, my point was directed to 4k, not 1600p. 4k (using rtx3080) dips to the low 70's in Warzone. Just having the extra screen size to be able to appreciate all that extra detail is very much appreciated. I do play at a medium distance, mostly to avoid eye-strain, so the size does not overwhelm me. All I can recommend to anyone is to head over to a retailer that has multiple screen sizes and resolutions available to sample. I've been using a 21:9 display for 5 years now and what I have to say about it is that for productivity, it is too small for a triple window layout and too big for fullscreen. A lot of programs and websites still do not center their content so there is a lot of looking to the left unless you manually adjust the window to be smaller and centered on the screen. Imagine that you have a dual 16:9 display setup with the space between the 2 monitors being right in front of you. That's about how it feels. I develop neck pain because of it if I'm not careful about my window management. I have a dual monitor setup with a 21:9 in front of me and a 16:9 display to the side and I think I would rather have a triple monitor setup with all 16:9 displays or a single monitor setup with a 32:9 display acting as 3 separate displays to the OS than the setup I have right now. Edit : My UHD monitor has a 2560px horizontal res. A 3440px horizontal res monitor would be much better but I don't think it would be enough.

For current games on max settings using a 3080, i'd rather have an ultrawide with stable high frame rates than a 4K with fluctuating frame rates. Personally prefer high frames than pixel density. Dont think i can ever shift back to 16:9 after experiencing 21:9.

I love my new 34; inch GP83A - B 160hz with Overclocking on monitor. I for an adjustable Vesa mount and am sooo happy with the amazing capabilities and ease of use. LG has won me over, with the HDR and crispness with modern optimized apps/games. The curve is very light which is what i prefer, unlike the Samsung. I paid $714 new on amazon which is amazing for 4k + gaming.

For me its ultwawide, had it for about 4 years now, theres no going back, dont think i could ever go back to 16:9 movies and browsing etc, the immersive single player games are insane. The only upside of 16:9 is the competitive gaming where it doesnt scale, in cs go for example i get an advantage in 21:9 coz it scales perfectly, but valorant does not sadly. Bought this in 2016: 3440x1440, 100hz, 21:9, gsync

I think 38" at 1600p and 32" with 4k are the real golden place to be. I just went up to the 38GN950-b, and I can't even imagine going back to my 34" ulrawide or my 27" 1440p. The only problem is getting the proper hardware to push these resolutions, and there are issues with some older games' menus on the ultrawide.
@60_704 жыл бұрын
I've been considering an ultrawide to take over as my main display, but I'm not sure where I'd move my secondary monitor to. Putting it angled down on top of the UW feels like it'd be to high for everyday use / bad for my neck long term. It has me sort of leaning toward a smaller 4k, that way I can keep the same side-by-side orientation my 27"/24" screens are in... but ultrawides look like a really cool experience...

For Downscale (16:9) 4k to 1440p or 1080p will be better or Ultrawide (21:9) 1440p to (16:9) 1440p and Ultrawide (21:9) 1080p to (16:9) will be better? Please test these 3 resolution and 2 ratios in one monitor Which one should I pick for better downscale when my GPU can't handle games in the future? Is it looks bad or good? Can you please make a video of it? There is no video of it with a good explanation on youtube. Try different games both Ultrawide and 4k and downscale them from 4k to 1440p and 1080p and 21:9 Ultrawide, 1440p and 1080p (16:9 Ratio) I am really confused by these two monitors which one will be best for downscale when my GPU can't handle games in the future. I want the best in 3 worlds, 4k or Ultrawide, 1440p, and 1080p. And another one is curve feels uncomfortable since it's curved. Are games look weird, curve-looking, and stretched? I've been gaming on a Dell U3011 30" 1600p monitor for 7 or 8 years now. I know it isn't high refresh, but it is glorious! The jump from 1080p was like looking thru a window to standing in the doorway - just more of everything and so much sharper. I'd love an even bigger monitor but this is the largest that fits my space.

I've been gaming for the past years and half on a mid-range 3440x1440p 34" Ultrawide from MSI. I loved the extended field of view, especially in shooters, but I had a max refresh rate of 100Hz, the VA panel was great for contrast but not that much for colour and response time, and compared to a 27" monitor you do have much less vertical screen space. I recently bought a Gigabyte 27" 1440p IPS monitor with 165Hz max refresh rate, and it's just... perfect! Love the colours, the response times, the size, resolution. I rediscover my games: everything is so colourful and crisp! I do miss the ultrawide, though. The day they make ultrawides with the same kind of panel and refresh rate, colours, etc. and the same vertical screen space, I'll be switching back!

I made the jump to 32:9 a few months ago and personally feel like, depending on the game, the skewed perspective isnt something very negative. In Escape From Tarkov seeing enemies I sometimes would have missed because of the aspect ratio is an absolute blessing. And then in more "open" games like witcher or horizon zero dawn, you just get lost in the world so much you would never notice it. The only thing that slighty concerns me is the fact that even though you render less pixels than at 4k you have to render more geometry at the same time. I've never seen any proper performance comparisons that delve into that part and sadly don't have the time or hardware to do that myself

Here's my take coming from a guy who had both 2k monitor at least (Gigabyte G32QC 165hz) and Ultrawide (Titan Army C29SH 200hz 1080p) Monitor. If you like to stream competitive games that doesn't support 2560x1080 or some other resolution for Ultrawide, it would be hard to maintain the settings you want because you have to tweak stuff in order to fit screen space on your stream. Playing games like Valorant on a Ultrawide monitor that doesn't support full screen setting, the letterbox are so distracting when playing, so I think going for a non-ultrawide monitor for games like Valorant is the go. I am planning on using my Ultrawide monitor for Stream or Social Media stuff and would buy a 24.5 monitor for all gaming related. Ultrawide is really nice, but you can't have it all. If you don't plan on streaming or you don't have the plan on playing competitive games and you'd just use an ultrawide monitor for movies and open world games, it's a go. So.......... Ultrawide = no good for compet games like Valorant = good for open world games = good for movies and multi-tasking Non-ultrawide = Good for everything, but you can't multi-task.

For an even more extended perspective, I got the samsung odyssey G9 32:9 49" back in August. While it is only 1440p vertically, it is an amazing experience for productivity (coding not editing) and browsing. I highly recommend an app called PowerToys which adds tons of ultrawide features, most notably you can designated certain areas of the screen to be their own windows so you can snap windows to that size. I found 25%-50%-25% to be the best ratio for the 49" monitor, giving me a full 27" window in the center with 2 half screens on the side for discord or an addition browser window. The pixel count is about 7/8 of 4k, so it is slightly easier to drive in games (but even more stretching near the edges in some games than 21:9). Whenever display and graphics technologies get to the point that 32:9 4k is feasible I will most likely switch to that for no compromises. In summation the 32:9 has the same pros and cons as the 21:9 but even more so.
