Optimus PRO LX-5 Comparison

so i was able to find a perfect set of original speakers and i decided to do a quick wtf comparison between the two

I've just replaced the foam surrounds on my pair of LX5's with one slight difference. Instead of replacing the surrounds with foam, I've opted to use rubber surrounds. Let me tell you folks, the bass response is way better than before. I put this down to the stiffnes of foam vs rubber. I bought both foam and rubber surrounds off EBay and was able to make a side-by-side comparison before replacement, the rubber surrounds were way more pliable so on they went.

The front baffle, which is plastic - is the weak point of these otherwise great speakers. I am planning on adding fiberglass to the back side. The tweeter is the star, of course. My solution was to buy new drivers (from Madisound www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-5-woofers/hi-vi-l5-8r-5-woven-kevlar-cone-woofer/ ). The ports are meant to be tuned vents to boost the lower midrange.

I had a pair of those back in the 90's...I thought they sounded great!

im still rockin the LX-7s as my fronts. still sound great! foam is still nice and soft, only prob with them is a couple very small nicks in one that I need to try and fix some how. they are on the bit that's flat against the cone. no grill + f'n cat = not happy!

The optimus lx 550 with the kevlar midbass is the better speaker. I glued 1" of dense fill all around the cabinet. Many people go too far on the fill and plug the ports. The lx 550 has a single flaired port and it's best to leave it open. Needs to be used with good quality solid state amplification to sound it's best and with open sounding cabling like a mid grade nordhost.

i use a pair form Omnimount, not sure of the model but it is sturdy with spike feet wood base and 2.5" pipe

Sound difference could be partly due to attaching new foam to outer edge of cone instead of the inside edge as the original. I just re-foamed mine on inside edge which was more difficult.

What Foam kit did you use? Can you post a link? I have 4 of these that need to be redone.

i run a "nobsound" MS-10D which is a buffer hybrid tube amp

sorry about that, i shot the video quick one night with my phone. however the second set in the video just finally dry rotted a few days ago... if you'd be interested, i can make another video refoaming the 2nd set.
