The reason your C4 doesn't damage Metal Gear every time is because you have to attack the legs in a specific order. Dr Madnar tells you the order if you rescue him.

Metal Gear has a specific order for using Plastic Explosives. The order is R ,R ,L ,R ,L ,L ,R ,L ,L , R ,R ,L ,R ,L ,R , and R. That's why it's sometimes not damaged.

at 14:15 after stocking up on ammo you should head south/down follow the path around and into a new room on the rood to rescue another hostage - this took me to Class 3 and a much needed life boost

This is a great guide on how to rush through the games but I prefer to play the games the way they were intended to be played, by taking it slow, sneaking around and being careful not to be detected as much as possible.

The cigarettes work in MG2 because the smoke appears when the wind changes to North. They explain it in the call you are getting at that part.
