So I have this grinder as well. Upon receipt I did not realize how large the grinder was and the weight. Fast forward 2 months later and this grinder to me was worth every dollar over my previous clunky specialita workflow and quality of build as well as accuracy dialing in espresso. Also the rpm adjustment is just so awesome as it opens the door for other experiments.

What is youre take on the df83 in comparison to p64?
@Hyytekk Жыл бұрын
Pardon my second comment! I was set on the P64 until I saw, just today the existence of their new 01 grinder. I found the P100 to be lacking in the elegant esthetics of the P64 so had no interest. This 01, on the other hand seems like it has several substantial innovations. I like that it has eliminated the forks. The new design has a magnetic holder for a mobile portafilter. It has a button on the front that can aid in knocking out any remaining fines. It also incorporates some antistatic component so no RDT is necessary. The motor spins up after it detects the grind is finished to further motivate fines into surrendering into the exit. The motor is a monstrous 1300W and can do a grind with its much larger burrs in about a third the time or less. No forks also means no mishaps of a portafilter vibrating out and falling, scratching that aluminum. The size is truly a beast and it weights twice as much as the P64. It's also about $800 more than the P64. It's more than I and most home users need unless you have a family the size of a sports squad. The style design is also less than enchanting. But now I am torn as to which one to order, though both are magnificent machines. Do you have any thought on this new offering or feel intrigued to make a change?
@SimonDrysdale Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind comment yesterday, I do read them all and they mean a lot. I haven't used the 01 so I can't really comment on that grinder specifically. However the innovations seem quite interesting, I like the idea behind the magnetic grinder stand thing; but I'd have to use it to know for sure that it wasn't a gimmick or something that is easily knocked over. I'm sure they put strong magnets on it. Provided it's stable it's a good idea. Having said that - option-O said that they have changed the fork design on the P64 since I bought mine and there's no longer a risk of the portafilter holder vibrating out. It doesn't happen on mine all that often but I just stand there for the short time it takes to grind to avoid it. The choice between the 01 and the p64 is more of a matter of if you want the 'absolute best' and are willing to pay significantly more for it, or if you're happy with what is already an excellent grinder in the P64. You could probably argue both are overkill for the home user but I'd say the p64 is probably more suitable for a hobbyist home user. The other thing is that 01 looks massive; so I would factor that into your decision and the distinction between 64mm burs and 102 I don't think is very large when. it comes to the actual taste in the cup; although I've never tested burrs that large so I can't be certain on that. Regarding your question on colour, it's obviously personal and a taste thing but I am clumsy and always scratch / ding things despite my best efforts, and I think that would show up more on the black (as would the fingerprints); and as it happens I prefer silver, so I'd always buy the silver one. Best of luck deciding, I don't you can really choose wrong either way; they'll both be great.
@Dotes111Ай бұрын
Thank you for the fantastic review! Since purchasing the P64, have you tried any other 64 mm burrs?
@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
The latest version has a WDT tool without hooks, I think it's 0.4mm thick needles. Mine also came with a magnetic funnel although it's not colour matched to my silver P64 it's black. I noticed your portafilter fork in some of the shots here looked like it's on an off angle, but also your portafilter ears are a bit angled / beveled so that probably didn't help with it staying on nicely. I also have a DF64 and it comes with some extra little silicon socks that go over its forks, they fit the top forks on mine so I use it, just because I don't like the metal on metal feeling if I'm using the dosing cup on the forks, but it also helps keep the portafilter in better most likely. You can do something similar, maybe with shrink wrap for wires. You're right about RPM, higher RPM usually means more fines, more body (maybe more bitterness) and less flavour clarity, with different burrs the ideal RPM range might be different, I found with SSP unimodal multipurpose burrs, higher RPM is necessary (above 7) to get good results for espresso, or at least I just haven't had great luck with really low RPM on those burrs. I think it's 'too' unimodal and lacking in fines.
@JonatasSantiago6 ай бұрын
Hi there! Nice comment. I was curious here: how much different you think DF64 is from P64 in terms of espresso tasting? I'm not considering the build quality or anything other than the result in the cup. Is P64 reasonably better than DF64 on that matter? Or most people wouldn't find difference in the cup between those 2? much appreciate your reply 🙏
@BensCoffeeRants6 ай бұрын
@@JonatasSantiagoI've had many DF 64s and the problem is you never know if you have a good one or not so good one. I've only had two p64 but both of them have been really good. If your alignment is off or kluemper is misbehaving or some other quality control issue then the DF 64 is not going to be as good or consistent but if everything else is equal with the same burrs you should get very similar or identical results at the same RPM. However retention and workflow an accessories and everything is just nicer with the p64

Great review! What I don’t understand 、maybe someone can chime in , if the burr is so important, why are there 3 big holes drilled in to mount it? It must be minimum 5% impact on uncontrolled behavior of the burr. Should not be too difficult to bottom mount it and have much better control of what the burrs can deliver. This is not just this product, it’s quite common.

Incredible review, content and execution! I just ordered my P64 in black. I saw it first on the real sprometheus channel and was enchanted by the quality, design and esthetics. Im having second thoughts about the black vs silver, though. I believe the black will show scratches much more prominently as well as collected static fines. Did you choose your silver version for esthetic reasons or wear concerns, or perhaps both. Please continue to create more content. Wonderful work.

3:57 I was just telling someone else the manual says "30s on/30s off for continuous operation (>20 shots at espresso setting). For less than that, there is no limitation. " I thought that meant you can do 30 seconds of grinding for espresso, then 30 seconds off, for up to 20 shots, but now I'm re-thinking that. Does it mean it only needs the 30 second break after doing 20+ shots?
@marapamts2 жыл бұрын
Definitely means you only need the 30 second break if you do more than 20 shots in a row (the ">20 shots" is them defining "continuous operation"), the wording is quite clear I think.

I guess it depends why you want to upgrade. The Niche is conical burrs and the Option-O is flat, which will result in a different taste but I would say one over the other is a matter of preference. Great video as always! Sorry for being nerdy but… When you did your retention test did you weight the RDT beans after they had been sprayed? Spritzing then with water will add weight and needs to be accounted for. Have you seen the bean vaults from Craig Lyn or Weber Workshops? You might really enjoy adding them to your workflow. As you touched in in the video, increasing RPM will produce more fines, while decreasing it will reduce fines. This allows you to dial in for body (more fines) or clarity (less fines).
@SimonDrysdale2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, Thanks for your kind feedback, really appreciated! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah with the retention test I did the weight after the spray to factor in the extra weight of the liquid. I did consider including some information about that but thought people might lose interest! I repeated it a few time and got the same figures. As I touched on there would obviously have been more conclusive results if I had a scale that went to two or three decimal places. I have seen the Weber Workshops bean cellars and would love to try them out, they're quite pricey to ship to where I live but I might have to test them out! I've actually never tried any of Weber Workshops gear but I hear it's all really nice quality. Have you tried them?

Thanks for putting together such a thorough overview. I have a novice question that may be really dumb: in this video (nor in your Linea Mini video) you aren't weighing your ground coffee. Is this because the Lagom P64 will grind an exact, measured dose? Or is weighing/gauging still required?
@SimonDrysdale2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, no problem, glad you enjoyed it! I think that's a perfectly reasonable question. So I would always recommend weighing your ground coffee. With the caveat that if you have a very low retention single dosing grinder (like the Lagom P64), then I personally don't. I weigh the beans before I put them into the grinder and I know with the RDT spray that I am going to get out
