I am just on shooting the flashlight footage now. I'm way behind on editing so don't expect to see it any time soon. Usually my work is not so busy in the Summer but this year it has been mad for some reason. Yes the rifles are a very efficient way to dispatch rabbits.

I have always loved rifles. The accuracy of them compared to shotguns and the way they humanely dispatch the target is very good.

I have the clulite, it has 3 interchangeable heads red, green and white. Works well on lamp shy animals. Great vid as usual, I know the guns were unloaded, but just a suggestion for future vids, explain that they are unloaded and safe, and with the rimfires have them bolt open. May sound a bit picky but some folks will pick up on it and start waffling on about gun safety............oh wait a minute that's me :-).........keep up the good work, interesting vids
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
Damn I think I may have the coloured heads somewhere in my outdoor gear cupboard - Totally forgot about that. Good point on the rifles being unloaded but I seem to be quite lucky when it comes to negative comments on my videos - maybe I have already blocked all those people, lol The clulite has a very nice tight centre to the beam which is very useful for 100-150yd shots. As I only have a .22 ans .17hmr that is the maximum distance I shoot to but it would be capable of useful operation well beyond that. The Olight has a more open beam but sub 100 yds is still a great tool, especially for the .22.
@Yorkie263
@Yorkie263 8 жыл бұрын
lol, the good thing about the clulite is that you can buy more heads if you need them. At least you are realistic with your distances for shooting quarry as well. I see lots of vids where things are shot at 200+ yards, and it always makes me wonder how many animals were not dispatched cleanly. Yes you are right about the trolls, eventually you block them all or their mothers tell them off and take away their laptops and send them to bed early :-)
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
lol, yeah that's about the size of it where the trolls are concerned although I have to confess I did like getting into some epic silly battles with them on some videos but now I simply haven't got the time to entertain them so I have to block them. Most of the time they were holier than thou Jesus freaks who just assumed I was a serial killer because I own guns. The distances some people try to shoot at is just plain ridiculous and every yard past the point where the sights are set diminishes accuracy so the only way is to keep it realistic and ensure the 1 shot, 1 kill humane dispatch of whatever it is being shot at. I've always been into rifles as the countryside is littered with the corpses of animals peppered by shotguns which suffer a terrible death.
@Yorkie263
@Yorkie263 8 жыл бұрын
Shotguns have their place, but even with rifles if you injure an animal you have a duty to dispatch it as quickly as possible. It's frustrating that the idiots out there give us all a bad name. I find an air rifle and some good stalking skills account for more rabbits than shooting at distance, and it's a real test of your skills, each to their own I suppose
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
Yes learning to shoot with an air rifle is very important as it teaches the user about shot placement, stalking, animal behaviour and so much more which are core skills overlooked by many of the 'spray and pray' guys.

I would say 150 yards is really the absolute maximum range for reliability/humanely taking rabbits with a .17hmr. That's why I have kept to my .22lr, 100 yards max is plenty for me. I have to say though, have you considered going up to centrefire? I plan on getting a .243 soon, just in case Charlie shows up :)
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
Yes 150 for .17hmr and I would say 75-80 for the .22 but it certainly has a god whack at 100. I'm just not confident enough in my ability to try for 100 yds with the .22. I had considered a .22250 as my mate has one - shoots much flatter than the .243 and is very good for foxes.
@srspower
@srspower 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah it always comes down to how comfortable you are. I have headshot rabbits free standing at 75 yards with cci subs so am pretty confident out to 100 with a rest especially if using high velocity ammo like CCI stingers. In terms of the .22-250 the ballistics look off the chart, even better than a .223 BUT they do have a reputation for a short barrel life! Mind you the .17hmr has a similar reputation. The good thing about a .243 is that you can shoot deer as well, nearly all deer in fact with the right load. And the .243 flies a lot flatter than a .308 yet has much more manageable recoil.
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
Yes if your're looking to drop deer too then .243 would probably be the one to go for.

Great video as always bud, some nice guns and setups there... i kind of want to get a second 22lr rifle on my license so i can get a 10-22 too, i have a thing for the takedown model. Also you can get semi auto pistols in our country, have one on my license... although not entirely sure the police would give you one for hunting haha and they must be 22lr and slightly longer barrels on them, generally the extra barrel length is hidden in what looks like a fake silencer over the barrel.
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
Good God damns I never knew the .22 semi auto pistols were legal - even with long barrels. I may investigate that one as I have seen a few for sale. I guess you would have to be a member of a gun club to own one?

Fantastic video, very interesting. I have a question: would the Clunite lamp you have on your .17hmr be compatible with the magnetic mount you use on the .22lr (to avoid using the awkward mounting screw? ) I looked at the links, and the mount works with torches from 23-26mm, and the Clunite is 26.6mm??

@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
Apologies for late reply. Yes it fits fine, just tried it. The Clulite is definitely a bit wider than the Olight but it is no problem to use that with the X mount. geni.us/9Zl7 The only extra thing to note is that my Clulite flashlight is approx. 5 years old so assuming they haven't changed the design since then it should be fine.

The X mount from Olight is a very good magnetic mount and the recoil from a shotgun definitely won't shake it off. It really gets a good hold of my .22 and .17hmr barrel so would fix even better to something wider like a 12g. This is the one I bought: geni.us/9Zl7

Hey Richard. Just as a funny idea for your next video (or maybe save it for a Halloween special?), I think you have enough equipment back there to do a video about what would be the best items to use in a zombie apocalypse! Pondguru Outdoors lol, that would be a great idea! You could get the kids to decorate the heads to make them look like Zombies. As I say, you've got enough survival kit back there and it would be interesting to see what equipment you would personally use. Guns, battery chargers, quick and easy bush craft and food sources, 'on the fly' medicines even tactical locations and all that. You could do so much with the idea, and it would be fun to probably make, and to watch. Cheers for the reply Richard, keep up the good work. Lee.

For what we're shooting in the UK nobody would need an 80 ft/lbs air rifle and to be honest even the one I have at 30 ft/lbs is overkill. At 80 you'd hardly get any shots from a full charge.

Is it hard to obtain a firearms licence in england? interesting video! all the best, hans
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
To get one you need somewhere suitable to shoot (written permission from landowner), a clean criminal record and basically be a decent sort of citizen as character references are needed. Some licenses are 'closed' which means you can only shoot where you have written permission but mine is an 'open' one which allows me to shoot anywhere in the UK as long as I have verbal permission. It is much easier to get a shotgun certificate but I'm not a fan of shotguns as they are so noisy that you see very little wildlife when using them.
@TerraGermaniaTG

I've never been a big fan of a flashlight on a firearm, just gives away your shooting positon. Natural human night vision is best. But I guess we're talking about two different situations, hunting game, or the more dangerous 2 legged vermin ! LOL ! Take Care Richard !
@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
We're probably talking about a difference between bolt action, semi auto and full auto too. I generally don't take a flashlight with me when I am walking at night unless I am lamping rabbits / foxes as natural night vision allows humans to see plenty. Unless there is full cloud cover most nights will be plenty bright. I'd love a proper night vision scope but really good ones are very expensive. Maybe if I sell some metal detectors I could justify it....
