When I drove for XPO, my van was metal and I did the zero sleeping bag and space heater thing. When sitting at the truck stops I was in bed in the sleeping bag when not driving, IT SUCKED!!! NEVER AGAIN. The Espar or the Chinese heater is the ONLY way to go.

I have a Honda 2000 watt gasoline generator, and have a small space heater. Very simple. I carry extra blankets to keep in body heat if I don't run that. Insulating the van is probably the most essential thing to do, then its just a matter of preference as far as heating. My generator is also handy for running my pancake air compressor to pump up tires quickly, and my coffee maker.

Heater buddy's have several safety features, including an oxygen sensor, and tip sensor. Both are incredibly sensitive and will automatically shut off if there isn't enough oxygen in the space. A slight tip will shut it off too.

Like many, I started out sleeping on the floor. If that’s your only option, lay a few packing or wool blankets under you! It’ll make a huge difference! You can also hang one or two across to block off part of the cargo area. A smaller area is easier to heat. Personally, don’t waste your money on a buddy heater. The small tanks that come with it are expensive and only last 4-6 hours, max. By morning, you’ll think you’re sleeping in a rain forest. I use a cpap, so a generator was one of my first “big” purchases. Since I’ve got that, I’ve always stayed comfortable with a small utility heater. Totally agree with Allen on the Chinese heater though. I also just bought an electric blanket. It’s been great for nights that there’s a chill, but not too cold. Reflectix on the windows gives you privacy, and helps keep the heat in too. Whatever you choose, I use a small fan on the lowest speed to circulate the air in the van. Heat rises! Unless you’re sleeping next to the roof, keep that warm air moving!

@@petohmi it depends on what I have for freight. Normally, with one skid, it goes in back between the freight and the back door. Otherwise, I have room under my bunk and access it through the side door. Either way, always remember to strap it down too. I know a few drivers that have a swing away arm on a receiver hitch. I can’t afford that right now. (I like to eat. Lol. 😉)

If no means for a heater, I highly recommend down booties. If your feet stay warm, your body stays warmer. I have a heater but I still wear my down booties in the back on the cold floor. Also wear a winter cap and gloves when sleeping along with the sleeping bag and booties.

As luck would have it. My first diesel heater just failed while I was in New Hampshire. After much research I've decided to purchase a second diesel heater and swap them out, servicing the bad one. Just as you explained. If it wasn't for my progression from "baggin' it" in the cold last year, I might have been in a panic when my heater went to shit. 20 years ago I just idled my 5.7L gas Chevy engine. Cracked a window and had a carbon monoxide alarm but the gasoline was 1.39/gal. I figured it cost about $7 night. Guess that wouldn’t work well today. In the summer I idled too. Those heaters scare the crap out of me.
@EverythingApax2 жыл бұрын
The heaters are very safe. The exhaust is on the outside of the vehicle. Idling is horrible on the van although I would do it for 20 minute intervals when desperate.

Good video. If you are using sleeping bags remember what is under is as important as what is above. Lying on cold metal or even an air mattress with no insulation below is bad news. Conduction will suck your body heat away. Makes for a misereable night.

Hi Allen, I've been thinking about the Mr Heater. I'm insulated with a solid bulkhead. The heater is rated at 225 Sq ft. Do you think it would keep up.
@twalters48122 жыл бұрын
This will work. Your routine plays a large roll on what will work for you. Keep in mind that propane causes moisture issues in your van. And also you have SOME RISK on carbon monoxide. A diesel heater exhausts to the outside when set up correctly.
@EverythingApax2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I had no luck using the Buddy heater but I've heard others swear by it. I'm a diesel heater guy.

Hi Allen. Do you think the diesel heater would warm the back of the van without insulation? I realize this is not optimal but in the meantime I was wondering if the heater on high could overcome the cold until I am able to get some insulation. Thanks in advance for any reply. Cheers.
@twalters48122 жыл бұрын
I have a heater without insulation. The van will not retain the heat produced by the heater. I only use my heater to take the chill off when waking up. I can get away with that due to my routine being different than others. I rely most on my sleeping bag.

I have a better solution find a carrier to run under that can get you home everyday with a mixture of load board n customers that work directly with carrier you work for . Nobody is getting rich off cargo van frieght , to do OTR will be a little more money but it ain't a big difference . You personally book your own loads with your own authority so I don't know why you choose to live in a van and not book loads that can get you home everyday .it's a costly, unhealthy lifestyle to live in a van or truck
